Rudy Hall on July 14, 1987. The building was built in 1940, and has been in deteriorated condition for years. Philanthropist Jean- ette C. Rudy financed the renovation, which has turned the building into a showplace. It will be used for social gatherings and to house visiting guests. CUMBERLAND UmBRaTYi HR T AmUAL XHOLARWIP BANQUBT Cumberland University ' s first annual scholarship banquet was held Thursday, September 24, 1987. This banquet honored the students receiving scholarships and the donors who support Cumberland and the education of students. Support for the students and the university was also given by the attendance of many parents, faculty and board members. Included in the banquet was a dinner and presentation of certificates to each scholarship recipient. Dr. M. Walker Buckalew and James Pat- ton presided over the banquet and both men entertained the students, donors, parents, and faculty members with renditions of their college education. Picture taking and fellowship con- cluded the evening. m V-MLSO V COUNTY REWENK Seated: Dawn Brawner, Kelly Snipes. Standing: Te resa Lawson, Debbie Gryszko, Pernell Booker. W CAN MAKE VOCf LAUGH On October 15, 1987, the student council sponsored the We Can Make You Laugh comedy show. Contestants were chosen from the audience and were drilled with jokes, funny outfits, and more. Those who managed to keep a straight face for three minutes re- ceived $25 in cash. Watching for smiles and giggles were Mary Beth Oldham, Doug Saunders, and Bonnie Vaughan. Tracey Sim- mons, Chuck Jones, Wendy Lowery, John Farrar, and Dr. Suhail Massad managed to ignore the comedians as they each won $25 for their straight-face efforts! 7 AuaUimtloi i GoMA Game master John Farrar pic- tured with Student Council Pres- ident Karen Oldham. The Cumberland University campus found itself soaking wet for two weeks when student council representatives spon- sored the assassination game. John Farrar found himself in the middle of several assassins as he served as game master. All who entered had a name to ' kill ' by drenching them with water. The object was to kill before being killed. Mark Vastola managed to stay dry as he won for the second consecutive year. Mark received 75 0 of the pot of money, with John receiving 25% for all his hard work. 89 ' . Activities began with a trip to the Pro Bowl West for an evening of gutterballs and strikes, as CU students tested their skill at bowling. The frolic continued the following night with a bonfire. Hotdogs and marshmallows were plentiful, and the fire was warm enough to cook anything; the only problem was the lack of coat hangers! A number of students retired to the Dawghouse for entertainment by our own CU band afterwards. Activities continued as a Halloween dance was held the next night. A costume contest brought out the characters in most of the students as Teresa Young won the contest and Lisa Halliburton won second place. The final night of Fall Frolic was dedicated to horror flicks. 93 miLOWBm DMCB COSTUME WINNERS SkmuI Plaaa;. Ken Trammel gave an inspirational message. Stan Blades, BSU President, sang Sweet Little Jesus Boy , and Dr. Suhail Massad played a Christmas Instrumental on his lute. Dr. Heitgerd read a poem In the Bleak Midwinter by Christine Rosetti. The University Singers performed under the direction of Dr. Bert Coble. Dr. Coble also led the group in singing Christmas Carols. Student Council President Karen Oldham made the closing remarks and wished everyone a happy holiday. The program ended with Dr. Richard Shriver singing Adary Had A Baby as the benediction.
