Cumberland University South Greenwood Street Lebanon. Tennessee 37087 Telephone (()T ) .t4-4-2 ' )()2 N.ishvillc ((.1 S) 2 ' ' ) ' 4-fniH Dear Students: The publication of the 1987 Phoenix marks the comple- tion of my fourth year as President of Cumberland University. I want to take this opportunity to express to each of you how much I have enjoyed my tenure here. A small college setting, which allows daily contact with students, faculty, and staff, provides an invigorat- ing and rewarding atmosphere. The past four years have certainly been exciting ones, filled with many positive accomplishments. The expansion of our academic curriculum, accreditation as a four-year university, and present plans for the construction of new facilities on campus, to name a few, have made Cumberland the place to be. As you know, Cumberland University has the oldest academic tradition in Middle Tennessee. While here, you have helped to perpetuate that tradition. I sincerely hope you have enjoyed the time you spent here, that you will fondly remember Cumberland as the years go by, and that you will be an active alumnus of this institution, working with us to pass the Cumberland heritage along to those yet to come. Best

Contanfs As in years past, the opening for this years Phoenix is an image of Memorial Hall. It is the history of this structure from which this publication derives its name. Burned to the ground at the close of the Civil War, Memorial Hall was rebuilt with the rest of Cum- berland due to the support of past alumni and the fine city of Leba- non. This year celebrates another re- building. The 1986-87 academic year is the first full year of opera- tion under the auspices of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. After many years as a junior college, the university re- ceived accreditation in December, 1985. Cumberland may now strive to take its place among the finer schools in Tennessee and the Southeast.
