Curnberlandl University PHOENIX 1987 Founded IS42 Cumberland University South Greenwood Street Lebanon. Tennessee 37087 Telephone (()T ) .t4-4-2 ' )()2 N.ishvillc ((.1 S) 2 ' ' ) ' 4-fniH Dear Students: The publication of the 1987 Phoenix marks the comple- tion of my fourth year as President of Cumberland University. I want to take this opportunity to express to each of you how much I have enjoyed my tenure here. A small college setting, which allows daily contact with students, faculty, and staff, provides an invigorat- ing and rewarding atmosphere. The past four years have certainly been exciting ones, filled with many positive accomplishments. The expansion of our academic curriculum, accreditation as a four-year university, and present plans for the construction of new facilities on campus, to name a few, have made Cumberland the place to be. As you know, Cumberland University has the oldest academic tradition in Middle Tennessee. While here, you have helped to perpetuate that tradition. I sincerely hope you have enjoyed the time you spent here, that you will fondly remember Cumberland as the years go by, and that you will be an active alumnus of this institution, working with us to pass the Cumberland heritage along to those yet to come. Best Contanfs As in years past, the opening for this years Phoenix is an image of Memorial Hall. It is the history of this structure from which this publication derives its name. Burned to the ground at the close of the Civil War, Memorial Hall was rebuilt with the rest of Cum- berland due to the support of past alumni and the fine city of Leba- non. This year celebrates another re- building. The 1986-87 academic year is the first full year of opera- tion under the auspices of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. After many years as a junior college, the university re- ceived accreditation in December, 1985. Cumberland may now strive to take its place among the finer schools in Tennessee and the Southeast. This is evident in the smiling faces which adorn the campus. As the dorm resident who found a novel way to express common sentiments, they meet challenges with a positive attitude. From the artist illustrating for many to the group observation of the art of nature, communication is a vital necessity, and Cumberland students are well versed. Over lunch, between classes, and occasionally in the Phone Home, students are constantly sharing ideas and emotions. 10 McishvilU H In a short while, one can be worlds away! Cumber- land ' s big city neighbor is known as The Athens of the South. Replete with its own Parthenon, Nashville is home to many booming business and education cen- ters. Taking its lead as the Music City, its many theme and cultural exhibits domi- nate regional entertainment. With all of these notables, it is easy to forget that Nash- ville is also the seat of Ten- nesse government. 11 12 At work or at play, the Cumberland-Lebanon community is the epitome of small town America. Located in the heart of Tennessee, its denizens enjoy the simpler relaxations of times past. This setting is particularly conducive for the educational operations of Cumberland University. 13 R merribronce It Is with much regret that The Phoenix notes the passing of the Castle Heights Military Academy. For many years. Castle Heights has been a partner to Cumberland In the academic training of Wilson County. Against overwhelming financial difficulties, Heights fought a gallant battle to remain in operation. However, low enrollment, which has plauged many institutions, finally took its toll In the Spring of 1986. So that Its demise will not be in vain. It Is hoped that other institutions may be able to analyze and garner any applicable lessons from this tragedy. As the Myth-Symbol of Cumberland, may all rise further from the gathered ashes. 14 GfciHtuclQ The Phoenix would like to thank the following sponsors for their most helpful contributions: VYUson County Motor Cornpciny Custom ?cic{ ciglng OuiS -Stop McirKat Ficlsllty F idlsral Savings and loan Ths Wilson World As well, the Phoenix extends sincere thanks to these helpful folks who contributed addition- al photographs: BUI Fletcher cinory Klncald Suhall Massad Jarnss Mills Finally, thanks to all who have cooperated and participated with our feeble efforts to produce a publication worthy of consideration. 15 16 f cimlllcif Foces 17 run Olu ' HluU ' illau U.h 18 Fest Each year, Cumberland hosts an old-fashioned car- nival on the Southwest Campus. Complete with song and dance, food and fun, the Fall Funfest is a joy to students and locals alike. From down home wagon rides to sky-high balloon trips, Funfest always Sweeps ' em away! 19 Fun Fes) I Ud KAIN I OUR FACE 20 21 ORGANIZATION A primary part of the mission of any learning body is tlie free expression of ideas and knowledge. Cumberland is fortunate to posses a noncommercial license from the FCC for the operation of WFMQ, the University ' s radio station. The student volunteers who man the station serve as proud reminders that the Constitutional guarantee of Freedom of Speech is fundamental to successful education. ¥ FMO John Hunn Allen Kemp Mike McDonald Joseph [Nicholson 23 Jim Aldredge Sharon Goad FrankJe Kinnard Keith McEnany Sam [Nicholson Lori Reasonover Caria Swindoli Stacy Washburn V M h CI cl I X 5 24 h t CI in d CI Gena Gividen, Leigh Fearg, Genia Massey, James Mills, Monty Bai- ley, Lisa Halliburton, Maria Flippin. This department has been active through the years, with gallery exhibits and participating in such school activities as funfest. The students have had various reasons for attending Cumberland and even more uses for their degrees later on. The talents of these students ranged from sculpting, painting and printing, to designing fashions and creating innovative packaging for consumer products. Each year the Gallery in Bone Hall has come to life with the exhibits from talented students and individuals from the Lebanon community. However, because of declin- ing enrollments, it became necessary for the University to close the department. Accordingly, the PHOENIX staff would like to dedicate best wishes and a fond farewell to the many artists who have brought Bone Hall to life. He was one of eight coaches nominated for the award. Area 5 is composed of all HA TA colleges in Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Leading to the coach of the year nomination, Hunt ' s team was 43-17, won the tennessee Colligiate Athletic Conference Crown in its first season of eligibility as a four year school, and ranked as high as ]2th nationally during the campaign. Four players were named to the All Conference and All District 24 and Area 5, and two Bulldogs, Modica and shortstop Mickey Martin, were named NAIA All Americans. Following the 1986 season Hunt was named TCAC Coach of the year, as well as C oach of the year in District 24 and 5, and was nominated for National Coach of the Year. Success is nothing new for Hunt, or for Cumberland (Jnviersity Baseball teams. Twenty; players have been drafted by major league teams since Hunts arrival at Cumberland. Hunt credits part of his program ' s success to a tough schedule. We ' ll play 1015 games each year against Division I schools he said, and almost always give them a good game. We haven ' t beat Tennessee or Vanderbilt yet, but give us time. 34 CAPTAIN MISSY NOEL Sephanie Anderson, Laura Leah John- son, Wanda Walker, Kathleen Lacha- pelle, Cynthia Lindsey, Rita Hamlet, Ranie Jewell. 35 ■ ' ■rt fi %: Suildogs 36 37 38 ri y d g A c I I o 39 y i jrtr3 ' -f- ; ' ' ' ' w- ' ' - 40 The Bulldogs never know who is going to be at one of heir games.
