Bachelor of Arts WORKING ADULT DEGREE PROGRAM GRADUATES The Cumberland University Working Adult Degree Program became a reality in 1984. During tlie first year, 250 applications were processed and from that group, the first graduates received their four-year degrees in May, 1985. This program is designed to enable working adults to pursue a college degree without the necessity of released work time in order to attend day classes on a college campus. Changes and developments in society such as the explosion of knowledge; new and rapidly changing technology; demands to retool, up-grade and keep abreast on the part of the work force; and increased expectations requiring the completion of a baccalaureate degree for many working adults have made the development of non-traditional programs for non-traditional students mandatory if higher education is to meet the needs of the non-traditional student as well as continuing to serve the traditional student. The working adults who have become a part of the Cumberland University family have added to the strength of the University, its student body, and service to the state and region. It is Cumberland University ' s hope that we have made a significant contribution to the working adults who have participated and to those who will do so in the future. Dr. Stockton was President of Cumberland College for twenty-five years before retiring on May 31, 1983. He was responsible for nnany of the big changes in Cunnberland over the years. He supervised the building of Justin Potter Hall in 1963, Edward Potter Hall and Mary White Hall in 1967. Stockton also saw the building of the J.B. Michael Student Center in 1963, the renovation of Mennorial Hall in 1966 and the accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1963. A great triumph for Dr. Stockton was seeing Cumberland change from a two-year junior college to the current four-year status it enjoys today. Dr. Stockton was a truly great man who had a plan and vision for Cumberland. He dedicated the best years of his life to making the dreams of Cumberland come true. We only regret that he cannot be here today to see all that Cumberland has and will become. We do know that those of us here at Cumberland University owe a great debt to the late Dr. Ernest L. Stockton. The Phoenix Staff ' ' 1? ' % 112
