According to an announcement released by the college, the four-year academic program is to be initiated in September with the first graduating class eUgible for degrees in May 1984. Academic areas of study to be included in the four- year program include Mass Communications, Business and Allied-Health Sciences. The college ' s administration stressed in the an- nouncement that the proposed curriculum will be limited within the three areas so as to assure absolute quality in its educational process. It was also told that Ciunberland will continue to offer its present Associate of Arts and Sciences degrees in its two-year program of study with emphasis being placed on core subjects. In connection with the approval of the four-year academic program the trustees also approved the initiation of a substantial fund-raising drive. More stringent entrance requirements for the college were also presented to board members as prescribed by the college ' s academic committee. The new entrance standards, which apply to transfer students as well as to high school students entering college for the first time, are to be enforced im- mediately YE The decision by the college ' s trustees follows news made public in November that Cumberland, founded in 1842, is in serious financial difficulty. It was after the fall board meeting that it was disclosed that Cumberland had been granted a reprieve from Commerce Union Bank to continue its operation until May on the agreement that the college would be given a line of credit in excess of $1 million to finish the school year. Since November the college ' s administrative staff and faculty have been working with trustee com- mittees in an effort to develop a new curriculum that will be attractive to college age students in order to turn the institution ' s ailing condition about. The new academic program came about after college and trustee committees visited and com- municated with other colleges similar to Cumberland that have made the transition from a two year school to a four-year degree curriculum and after interviews with Cumberland students and prospective students as to what their priorities are in the selection of academic studies and professional and employment fields. The proposed new academic program, coupled with the promise of a substantial gift from the sale of the University Medical Center hospital upon the formal completion of its transaction with American Health Corporation, gives the institution which once held university status new standing according to trustee BANON Wilson County News EMOCRAT ]3 1888 we Ve covered news like dew covers the county. anon, Tennessee 37087 25 Cents 30 Pages spokesmen. Our fight has just begun, Trustee Board Chairman Sen. William D. Baird said, noting that the school must now work to raise substantial funds to keep its hopes alive. Baird emphasized that the school, which is the alma mater of the late Secretary of State Cordell Hull and a number of national leaders and governors, must not let up at this point in its effort to gain significant financial support. Scholar- ships given to returning freshmen and sophomores were also awarded. Surprises and happy moments were enjoyed by faculty, family, and students and will be remembered as a high point of the school year. pri;- -: - ' ■2 aMMc«B0! - v Ci ri 89 AWARDS AND HONORS COMMENCEMENT 1982 President ' s Award Don W.
