Many alumni have excelled in positions of trust throughout the country in such professions as religion, law, education ,t H»i? armed forces, business, ond government. One such alumnus, Cordell Hull, achieved worldwide proi itm OS the father of the United Nations. He conceived of the Good Neighbor Policy, and won the Nobel Prize for Peace. He served as Secretary of State longer than any other man. Cumberland students hove always displayed the high standards and integrity characteristic of Cumberland College, and have made noteworthy contributions to their society. I

In this Bicentennial year our thoughts turn toward the post. Cumberland has not yet reached an age of 200 years but now in its 1 34th year it has a rich heritage of which it can be proud. It is a heritage of service and academic excellence.

Cumberland University was founded in 1 842. Classes began with an enrollment of 45 students and 4 professors. Today, over 400 students attend classes at Cumberland College unde r the guidance of over 20 faculty members. Over the years Cumberland has continuously provided for the students o select body of superior instructors. Through the continued efforts of its faculty and staff, Cumberland ' s great tradition will continue to influence the lives of its students.
