Paced by two leading scorers in the Dixie Confer- ence, and tough rebounding, the Bulldogs walked away with the Dixie Conference crown for the second consecutive year. The Bulldogs took an over-all 19 5 season record into the regional tournament at Columbia, Tennessee. After bombing Columbia in first round action, the Bulldog thoughts were drifted to Lindsey-Wilson. Joe Lowry ' s last second shot advanced the Bulldogs to the semi-llnals where they tangled with the Utica Bulldogs. Cumberland was unable to match the hot shooting and fierce rebounding of Utica. Cumberland linished third in the Re- gional Tournament and placed Joe Lowry and Chuck Starbuck on the All-Regional Team. Coach Washer plans strategy during a lime oul. The baseball team had its ups and downs; the over-all season record was not too impressive. Yet the Bulldogs of Coach Van Washer played some of the roughest competition in the history of Cumberland. The 1967 Bulldogs were young, but this year a great deal of experience and promise has already been displayed. 110 The pitching of Donnie Leverett com- bined with the catching of George Tinsley formed one of the best batter combina- tions in the Dixie Conference. Along with his fine catching, Tinsley displayed his batting ability through the season. Leverett, a sophomore in 1967, was a returning pitcher with an impressive record from the previous year. Donnie Leverett George Tinsley Coach Van Washer heavily relied upon th e power hitting of David Skinner and Tommy Ni.xon throughout the season. Skinner and Nixon played key roles in the Bulldogs season. Skinner, a sopho- more in 1967, was a standout all year long. Nixon, a freshman, not only dis- played his ability with a bat, but played outstanding defense throughout the sea- son, i Coach Van Washer, Tommy Nixon, and David Skinner. Ill Tennis KNEELING: Tom Denton. Ken Giles. Sammy Hatcher. STANDING: Verlin Hyder, Steve Beaman, Ransom Hobdy. The 1966-1967 netlers of Cumberland played one of the roughest schedules in the history of Cumberland as a junior college. .-Mthough the tennis team had a rough season, much promise was exhibited. Verlin Hyder and Sammy Hatcher were two stand-outs all season long. Although a young and inexperienced team, Cumberland ' s netters made good showings in each of the games they played. Dr. Stockton worked with the tennis team in many practice sessions. At one time Dr. Stockton was an ace netter for Cumberland. 112 SAMMY HATCHER Last year ' s tennis team was anchored by the hard-nosed playing of Sammy Hatcher. Sammy ' s skill won him the respect of the opposing teams as well as the respect of his fellow teammates. This year Sammy has a year ' s experience in the Dixie Conference under his belt to add to his skill and knowledge of tennis. Golf 1966-1967 The performance of the 1967 golf team was outstanding throughout the golf season. Paced by the sharp shooting of Charlie Gregory, Bo Price, Gary Kaplan, Maurice Smellzer, Wayne Starks, and Tom Deloach, the Bulldogs came through in flying colors. The 1967 year proved to be a very successful one for the whole golf team. Much was learned and accomplished through the hard work, shown by the golfers. The pride displayed by the team also contributed to the success of the team. 114 Wayne Starks The top-notch golfing of Wayne Starks paced the Bulldogs for the entire season. Starks turned in many superb performances in clutch situations. His head ' s- up play and his attitude toward the sport of golf sparked the team throughout the season.
