This team represented the school for the first time in many years. Coach Washer planned a schedule for them which coincided with that of the baseball team. The golf team did not post a very impressive record, but they did gain valuable experience. Above all, their interest proved that Cumberland may someday have an athletic program which includes all major sports. Much thanks should be extended to Rick Koss, Tom Bond, Tommy Brown, and John Mack Draper for starting what we hope to be one of Cumberland ' s most impressive sports. 65 TEMMS Another of Cumberland ' s newer sports is tennis. Having been organized three years ago after many years of dormancy, tennis shows the promise of becoming a most popular facet of the athletic program. Damon Beard served as coach of the netters for 1966. He was often assisted by Dr. .Stockton who was at one time a tennis star himself for Cumberland. Like the golf team, the tennis players followed a schedule similar to the baseball players. Rain forced many of the games to be cancelled, but in spite of difficulties, the team posted a record much improved over that of the previous year. Steve Willis and Verlin Hyder were one of the most favorable matches. Other members were Edgar Anderson, David Houdeschell, Julian Cooksey, Gary Mifflin, Charles Smith, and Mac McXIann. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Patsy and her staff for the most successful job of finance and advertising in the his- tory of the PHOENIX. They sold more advertisements than ever before and they have created one of the most imaginative ad sections I have seen. If you have skipped through it, go back and take a second look. It is just as important as any other section — maybe more important, for without it there would be no PHOENIX. Again let me say Thank you, Patsy, not only for being the best business manager I could have had, but also for being the faithful and understanding friend that you are. Gilrcath EDITOR ' S PAGE There are so many to whom I owe thanks it would be impossible to name them all; but there are a few unsung heroes who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. My stafT has been wonderful, but there are those who have done more than their share. Patsy not only did her advertising section, but also pitched in to help on anything that required an extra hand. Besides giving us some of the best photographs possible, Julian did the entire Sopho- more section when we found ourselves being pressed by a deadline. Milli did typing, drew layouts, and helped think of the captions for the Campus Life section besides being Honors Editor. Harry and Judy and their staffs produced some of the most creative sections to be found in the PHOENIX. But still, there are others to whom I owe my deepest gratitude. They are not staff members; some of them you have never even seen. And yet they are just as responsible for this book ' s being in your hands as any of the staff or I. Thank you, Mr. Wendell Deyton, for designing the opening section of the book; and thank you, Mr. Dick Richardson, for being the most considerate and understanding representative we could have had. Mrs. McDonald and Commander Harris have been so helpful. Without them to en- courage and aid us, we could never have made it. But most of all, I want to thank the Board of Publications and anyone else who was responsible for my being appointed editor. I have joked about it. I have become dis- gusted. I have been at the point of quitting. But I always knew that I could never stop until this book was finished. It has been my life for the past year. I feel now as if it were a part of me.
