vbC ' ' PHOEniK PUBLISHED BY THF LAW STUDENTS OF CUmBERLfinD UniUERSITV LEBANON. TENNESSEE HOnORflBLE CORDELL HULL FROM THE MEMOIRS OF C R D C L L HULL In early January, 1891, I began my fornnal law education, entering the senior class of the Cumberland Lav School at Lebanon, Tennessee. Cumberland Law School was a famous Institution which had turned out many Senators and Congressmen. . . . There I en- joyed the teaching of three of the finest law Instructors I have ever known at any Institution of learning — Chancellor Nathan Green, Dr. Andrew B. Martin, and Judge Edward E. Beard. Young men came from many states to get the benefit of their instruction. When I went to Congress sixteen years later I found In Washington four or five Senators, one Justice of the Supreme Court and twelve to fifteen Congressmen who were Graduates of Cumberland University. In June I passed the final examination and was graduated. According to custom, we members of the graduating class, the moment we received our diplomas, took them to the court- house, where a district judge awaited us. hie swore us In as members of the bar. I was not twenty years old. According to an Act of an early State Legislature, graduates of the Cum- berland Law School could be admitted to the bar under the age of twenty-one — others could not. I ran into my first law case on my way back from the law school — CRRUTHERS HRLL mEmORIflL HALL U Ui mm LiBRRRv nno RERDinG ROOm BOOK F fl C U L T V fl n D DDminiSTRflTion DEDICflTIOn SAM B. This is done in a nunnber of ways. The publicity director has a re- lease list of major daily news- papers, the major press associa- tions, and the home town paper of every student. This office also clears news bulletins released by the student organizations, and provides them with valuable information about how to get the maximum results out of their items. One of the most impor- tant functions of this staff is to serve as a channel or link be- tween the student and his home town in reporting any honors JACK Q. NEAL PUBLICITV DIRECTOR EARLE MURPHY and awards that have been received here, as well as his progress in school. A detailed feature article is published on each candidate for a degree short- ly before graduation. This student of- fice works closely with the Registrar and the Dean in helping to preserve the favorable position Cumberland has gained throughout the years. Jack Q. Meal is Publicity Director, Earle Murphy is Assistant Publicity Director, and William Smith is the Photogra- pher for this staff. This office does not advertise ; it honestly reports. All news is always treated in good taste. 33 BOOK IV ORGflniZRTIOnS flCTiuiTiES nno Housinc SUnOflV SCHOOL CLASS OFFICERS FOR 1951-52 JUDGE SAM B. GILREATH Teacher EARLE G. MURPHY President BYNUM A. This school year ' s athletic progrann has been managed by two able Athletic Directors, Charles Woods and Cletus Knight. Woods served In 1 95 I and Knight In 1952. The athletic program consisted of a highly competitive Intramural football schedule and an intercollegiate basketball team. Three teams com- peted on the Intramural level, and at the end of the season had the following standing. In first place came the Phi Alpha Delta team which won three games, lost none, and tied one. The Spiders, law Independents, were in second place with one victory, two losses, and no ties. The Spiders were followed by a game but outclassed Delta Theta Phi team which won no games, lost two, and tied one. Individual honors went to J. Mac Peebles, Sam Bass, Harry Wllters, and Bill Goodrich. The Collegian reported on several occasions that W. B. Lock- ert also played. The school ' s basketball team maintained an ambitious sched- ule, but they rose to the challenge and made a good showing. Students and faculty alike expressed a great deal of interest In the athletic program, and it looks as though athletics will retain a place in Cumberland ' s activities. Solomon B fl S K E T B fl L L 48 m T COURT By Mrs. James H. Smith Probably the most Important course as far as the prospective practicing attorney Is concerned Is Moot Court. In Moot Court the student has a chance to bring a legal action Into court and try It before a judge and jury prior to his entering Into actual practice. Having thus tried a case he can protect his client ' s rights better, not only In being familiar with procedure and the Introduction and omission of evidence but most Important In learning to prepare his case and learning to express himself to a judge and jury. On Wednesdays at eleven o ' clock the school has Ifs weekly as- sembly programs. This year there were a wide variety of programs Including a debate, talks by local pastors, a speech by Chief Justice A. B. Neal of the Tennessee Supreme Court, and Congressman Albert Gore, of Tennessee, who Is pictured below speaking to the student body. R S S E m B L V 50 SUmmER SCHOOL, 1951 The summer school session of 1951 will be remembered as the Law Schools last term In Caruthers Hall before moving to greatly enlarged facilities in Memorial Hall. While most universities closed up shop ' in all but actual classroom work for the summer, our school continued to maintain an active program. To the student council much credit is due for the activities that were provided last summer. The council sponsored a dance which Cumberland students and their guests thoroughly enjoyed. Our camera caught Mr. and Mrs. Lee Shannon on the dance floor and Mayor and Mrs. William Baird watching the dancing. Not only did the council provide this dance, they also arranged for students to use the Hazelwood swimming pool, which is only a short walk from school, as part of their student activities. Several of the students are pictured below get- ting a tan and going swimming. The physical facilities of the building include a spacious lounge, where ping-pong is the number one attraction, a dinmg room that boasts of a variable menu, and individual rooms for each student who lives In the building. The governing body of the dorm is the dormitory council, which is elected by the students. Below are shown pictures of Bone hHall, the dormitory council, the dining room, and an average one-man room.
