With an inexperienced squad and a tough nine-game schedule even a mildly successful season seemed remote. Traveling several hundred miles in all directions only to be administered several defeats failed to dis ' courage the Bulldogs, who improved with each loss. An inspired team took the field against T. P. I. in our annual Homecoming game, and scoring a com- plete reversal of form took the game by a score of 6-0, on a pass from Johnson to Cunningham. After losing a close one to Carson-Newman, the gridmen returned and scored another surprising vic- tory in the Parents Day game against Maryville. Vaughn ' s punt return of some sixty yards and Miles Christian ' s eighty-nine yard run featured the 13-0 win. Hoyal Johnson, one of the greatest line backers ever seen here and Tom Mayberry who became famous for his goal-line stands were named to all-conference posts at the end of the season. THE 1939 PHOENIX -BASKET ALL With prospects the best in recent years for a successful basket ball team Coach Bob Gerald, Junior law student with a fine coaching career at Lynchburg College, called practice in the new $35,000 gymnasium during first week in December. Three lettermen returned to give Coach Gerald a nucleus around which to build a team for the 13 game schedule. The hoop ' throwers did justice to the first season of play in the gym ' by winning 7 out of 13 games, a record of which to be justly proud. Unable to schedule the necessary number of games to qualify in the smoky Mt. Conference race, Cumberland ' s record cannot be compared with others to see how they rate. Then too, the season closed early so that preparation for the regional tournament could be arranged in the new gym. Cumberland was the first University to donate the proceedings from an athletic contest to the Presi ' dent ' s Ball. For this game Coach Gerald ' s boys played the Celtics, with the outcome in antics being 72 to 70 in favor of the Celtics, of course. For the season the Bulldog ' s swished the basket for a total of 603 points to their opponents 564. For the second straight year Droopy Edwards led the scoring parade with 158 points. Other members of the team and their points are: Patrick 151, Ccnwell 116, Bass 65, Fisher, 38, Robertson 20, St, Charles 6, Carter 5, Lusk 12, Vaughn 9, Freeman 6, Simpkins 4, Pitts 3, Swartzfager 2, Ligon 1.
