THE rH ElIX Published by the Students of CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY 1934 THE PHOENIX Andrew Jackson Cash - Tage 2 - FOR J_ E.dLaatLon We of Cumberland University dedicate this volume of The Phoenix to that ardent modern, Andrew Jackson Cash, Univer- sity Secretary, who has served in this capacity for nine years. To his unflagging interest in youth and to his outstanding ad- ministrative ability and sound judgment the University owes much of its phenomenal success and increasing influence. — Tage } ■ THE PHOENIX joxs uiTord In compiling this edition of The Phoenix, we, the staff, have tried to picture in both words and pliotos part of the great worlc undertaken by the administra- tion of Cumberland University, and to show that Old Cumber- land, our University, stands in its magnificence a criterion for the unborn future. His business and public service connections were numerous and in each of these he left a host of friends. Mr. Hooker was an en- thusiastic supporter of education and was for years identified closely with the work of Cumberland University. During the greater part of that time, he was a member of the Board of Trus- tees and for a number of years was the treasurer. The faculty and student body join in recognition of the loyalty, simplicity, and sincere service of this splendid alumnus. Morrow Athletic Director THE PHOEN ' «■!■■ i I John Troxler, Girls ' Coach For four years Johnny has turned out creditable co-ed teams for Cumberland. This year he trained a small and fighting bunch of lassies; they were always flashy, fast, and fighting to the last minute. He had the confidence of each player, and they all fought for him. The thing he praised most was the spirit of his team which in itself speaks for his coaching. Garl.and AIorrovv, Director of Athletics The officials of Cumberland realized the wonderful ability of Coach Morrow as a coach, and gave the Athletic Department a most dependable and versatile man by appointing him Director of Athletics in the fall of 19.33. Working with a freshman squad, he turned out a most creditable football team, whose true accomplishment of that year ' s work was shown in this year ' s team. Onh ' those who know Coach know the suave, easy manner in which he tackles his work; he is a skillful worker, who instills a fighting spirit in the hearts of players. Eugene McIlwaine, Assistant Coach Mcllwaine. whose feats and achievements as a player and coach are well known to every Cumber- land student and follower, has proved to be a very valuable asset to the Bulldog coaching staff. Because of his remarkable coolness, his ability as a field general, and the possession of that never say die spirit, Mac is a most competent coworker of Coach Morrow. Lindsev has been known to football fans throughout the State. He is the most spectacular player that has ever worn the Maroon and White of Cumberland. Aside from being the most versatile ball carrier, he was a good blocker and a deadly tackier. He rightfully deserves the honor bestowed upon him by his team mates as the most valuable player on the squad. WooDROw Wilson, Quarterback Small physically, but large mentally characterizes Woody. He is quite consistent and adept in calling signals in an unmistakable and concise way. Most important of all he knows what plays to run at the critical moments of the games. Woody retained the personality which never failed to in- spire his team mates. Shannon Robison, End Shannon is the only player to be lost through graduation, which will no doubt be as big a blow to the team as one man can deal. He proved to be a reliable and consistent player. His consistenc) ' along with his idea of true sportsmanship won for him the admiration of the squad. Some school is going to have an outstanding coach if he decides to do this kind of work. Dan Sims, Guard Sims came to Cumberland last year and has been one of the most dependable players on the squad. He has shown himself to possess both the ability and determination that are essential for any football player who is an asset to his team. We are expecting him to continue his good brand of playing next year. Cecil Appleby, Center Playing for his second year with the Bulldogs, Cecil exhibited ability which stamps him as a good athlete. He is well built and we have no fear that he will be able to hold his own on any football team. Being capable to play the guard position he saw service there besides being a reserve center. 66- FOR 9 3 4 MOEBES Aaron Lindsay West GlALANELLA John Moebes, Tackle One of the most stubborn fighters ever to wear the maroon jersey, Moebes proved a big obstacle in every enemy ' s path. A fighting spirit in addition to his brawn are his most noteworthy attributes. His playing throughout the entire season was of the highest type, and his presence in the Red Line made that branch all the more powerful. David Aaron, Tackle Dave played his second year as a Bulldog. He was a most essential cog in the success of his team. Dav-e was a constant threat — possessed of the qualities of a born fighter, and versatility in getting down on punts and smearing enemy plays. His weight in the line was necessary many times, and at those times he used it to the best advantage. We are looking forward to a successful season next year with Aaron in the line. Eldon Lindsay, Halfback ,. Although this was Lindsay ' s first year at Cumberland, he showed that he was a good player by being in the starting line-up practically ever r time. He was by far the best punter on the team, an exceedingly good blocker, and a hard fighter with the true Bulldog spirit. With another year ' s experience he should be one of the best backs in the state. Wilson West, Center If one word were to be used in describing West that word would be fight. Yes, most anyone will admit that there is no better fighter on the team. West is a good passer when on the offense, and even better when it comes to smearing a play. The cry from opposing backs to Stop that Center was heard in almost ever} ' game, and true it is that his tackles many times threw the opposition for a loss. Let ' s be there again next year. West. iMiKE GlALANELLA, End . n all-state man from New Jersey — Mike lived up to all expectations. He filled the left end position exceedingly well. Throughout the year his offensive play was good, but his defensive work was brilliant. More than once he waded through three or four interferences to throw the ball carrier for a loss. With Mike ' s ability and love for the game, Coach Morrow will have no worry about the man to fill left end for the next three vears. ■ ' Paf,( 67 THE PHOENIX Lewis McCluen BONAVITA Orr Butler Robert Lewis, End Bob was one of the most valuable players, not only because of his brilliant playing but also because of his consistency. He was a terror to enemy end plays, and death when a pass came his way. A great defensive player, but a greater offensive man. His ability was well demonstrated in the Murfreesboro game. Lloyd McCluen, End Although he has had only a small amount of experience, McCluen shows that he has plenty of football ability. His good nature and willingness to try hard is an asset to any player. Kid has the beginning of a good end, for he is a deadly tackier and can cover punts nicely. He played great ball in the Lambuth game. With more experience he will develop into an excellent wingman during the next three years. ' Jerry Bonavita, Quarterback In spite of the fact that he had a great deal of tough luck in regard to injuries, Jerry probably exhibited some of the most spectacular playing shown by any member of the team. He combined the ability to run the team intelligently, and at the same time perform in good style the duties of carrying the ball. Anyone who saw the Hiwassee game will long remember the style of playing he exhibited at that time. Vance Orr, Tackle The playing of this linesman has improved since he started in the early fall. When called upon to take either tackle position he filled it well. We recall that his playing during the Alabama game was exceedingly good. We are expecting great things from him in the future. Howard Butler, Guard Through his determined spirit Butler has become almost a perfect guard. No one could tell when he was coming out of the line as an interferer, but the players whom he blocked knew he was coming from somewhere. Too little credit is usually given the guard who plays such a vital part in the game; however, there is ample proof of his outstanding ability. Butler captained the Lambuth game and gave a good account of himself. ■Tage 6S- FOR 9 3 4 U Thompson LooMis High James Thompson, Manager Jimmy came to Cumberland last year with the reputation of being a great football player, but was unable to play because of a knee injury received in the early fall. This year Jimmy was chosen manager, and he has proved to be a capable and efficient one. Here ' s hoping that he gets the tricky knee in shape by next year. Buck Loomis, Halfback A freshman, but tough and fast — Buck was always good for yardage through the line. A plunger of no mean ability, a clean gentleman on the field, and a natural fighter. Always on his toes in both offense and defense, his conscientious work brought results. Elisha High, Guard Another freshman to uphold the traditions of the Red Line. Having a profound love for the game and being a determined fighter from the beginning to the end, he has been an asset to the team. High will be back next year and will undoubtedly gain greater recognition in the future. Don Knox, Assistant Manager Don was always ready and willing to do anything that he could for the team. The whole squad agrees that the equipment was kept in fine shape. Don was always full of fun and contributed much to the mental attitude of the team. - Tage ■6 ) THE PHOENIX GIRLS BASKETBALL Record for Season vM Cumberland 23 Cumberland 25 Cumberland 29 Cumberland 21 Cumberland 22 Cumberland 39 Cumberland 24 Cumberland 26 Cumberla id 24 Cumberland 33 Cumberland 25 Murfreesboro Independ its 25 Austin Peay 31 Bellevue independents 38 Murt ' ree ,o Indep ' . ndents 20 Austm Peay 20 Mt. Sarah Smith, For rd Sarah came from the high school with an enviable record, and it did not take her long to prove her ability. She was very adept and expert at passing, and an extraordinary shot from close-up positions. An admirable fighting spirit and wonderful teamwork make Sarah outstanding. Alice Dyal, Guard Another first year player who cinched a place in the starting line-up of the last few games of the season. Her height certainly proved an asset in the Martin College game. She has spirit, ability, and determination, and will be a most valuable player next year. Mary Rambo, Forward Playing for her first year on the team Mary displayed ability and spirit that will be useful in her remaining years. Nonchalant and easy-going, but an accurate shot and good passer. With a little more speed Mary would make one of the best of forwards. His hand skill, dribbling, and ability to emerge from a scrimmage carrying the ball, made him one of the most desirable members of the team. He has made an enviable record, and his place will be hard to fill. Lyndon Jennings, Guard In the very first game Jennings illustrated that he was a capable and steady player. He excels in getting the ball from the backboard and in dribbling through his opponents. He possessed a dangerous left-hand shot that few opponents were able to guard. The loss of his ability and fighting spirit will be sorely missed by the team next year. Shannon Robison, Center The tip-oif was always Shannon ' s; he was a giant on the defense, and the steadiest player on the squad. Hard fighting and clean, Shannon is one of the best players ever to perform at Cumberland. His loss to the team will leave a gap which Coach Morrow will find hard to fill. LiNDSEY Donnell, Forward As on the gridiron — Lindsey showed that he was always consistent and often a brilliant player. This is his first year on the team and as he plays more his ability grows. Conscientious playing and true sportsmanship characterize Lindsey. Robert Lewis, Guard Bob played good ball throughout the season, and it mattered little whether he was playing guard or forward. He was all over the floor, breaking up passes, and putting a crimp in every attack of his opponents. Bob always gave his best, and his best is beyond question. Tage 74- F O I 9 3 Hall Proven Aaron Barb Butler Brice Hall, Forward Hall is a sub that can fill in as a substitute and never falter. He is especially to be commended for his faithfulness and hard work. The true accomplishment of this year ' s work should show itself in the games next year. Thomas Proven, Fortvard A newcomer to the team who proved most valuable. Proven has the knack of making snappy backhand passes and accurate one-hand shots. He is not surpassed for fight, determination, and ability. Dave Aaron, Guard The abundant natural resources in the shape of a great physique and fighting spirit which have characterized Aaron on the gridiron make him a great player. He is a neat passer, and the best man to play the pivot position. _Aaron is an all-round good player and has two more big years ahead of him. Fred Barbour, Center Another newcomer to the team this year, usually jumped center and immediately dropped back to one of the guard positions. This probably made his playing less conspicuous but none the less important. His height is an asset in both positions. Chink is a player that will give the opponents plenty of trouble next year. Donnell Sponsor The Young Men ' s Christian Association on the Cumberland campus is organized to promote higher Christian ideals, as well as to encourage more wholesome fellowship between the students. The im- portance of the Cumberland association is not only recognized on the local campus, but frequently re- ceives recognition from the state and Southwide leaders. This past year under the leadership of Henry La Raia the Y. M. C. A. has enlarged its field of duty. Besides its regular religious duties the Y. M. has co-operated with the Y. W. C. A. in various matters throughout the year. The biggest undertaking of the Y. l. and the Y. W. was the production of a show in order to raise money to send delegates to the Blue Ridge Conference in August, 1934. The officers of the Association were; First semester, James Orr, President; Roy Smith, Vice President; Henry La Raia, Secretary. Second semester: Henry La Raia, President; Vance Orr, Vice President; Harold Stephens, Secretary; and Professor Donnell, Faculty Advisor. The Y. M. was the winner of the boy ' s first .-Annual Stunt Night. ' Page no- FOR I 9 3 SQUARE AND COMPASS CLUB OFFICERS L. j l. Parsons President J. L. Taylor J ' ice President E. B.
