- AS? ' Copyright Robert H. Haralson, Jr. Lyndon B. Jennings ■ s s ?ki v: ' y..kNT THE PHOENI Published by the Students of Cumberland University 1933 n e • To Ralph Tiiisley Donnell iii par- tial reward for his untiring efforts, as athletic committeeman, as debate coach, as teacher, and as student advisor. • Largely through his efforts varsity football returned to Cumberland this year, and to him alone goes ihe credit for the excellent showing of the debat- ing teams. His religious guidance has been a beacon to many and his friendly advice welcome for the asking. • Cumberland can never fully pay for the noble services this energetic instruc- tor has rendered her, hence we the Fua-NiTi staff , as a token of apprecia- tion, dedicate, as flowers for the living, this book to him, who is devoting the best of himself to the perpetuation of his Alma Mater and to the enhancement of her great name. ■• _ _. • hi compiling this volume the staff has endeavored to depict the activities of the University, its students and organizations. • Unjorlunately all noteworthy inci- dents and all notable individuals do not find mention. So it is for this book, in later years, to serve as a stim- ulus to a complete memory of old friends and associates and of their deeds and doings. • No better factor to innervate recall than the picture has been found. With this view in mind we have incorporated as many representative photographs as space would permit. The Staff m % THE UNIVERSITY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS FEATURES • In recognition of the notable tvork of the University Woman ' s Club. • Their work in supplementing the fiction department of the University library has been exceptionally beneficial to student readers. • Cum- berland ' s present beauty is due large- ly to their work in planting of shrubbery and young trees. • We pay tribute to their energy and efficiency in serving the University and the students. l- -Kt ' ' ' — — T • o z 3 m 00 H 3 u 7 5 CARUTHERS HALL Built in J 875 and named for Judge Robert L. Juniors Tennessee Wesleyan Sewanee Freshmen 14 Rollins College 19 Austin Peay Normal 80 Howard Butler Guard Howard was the smallest man on the squad and just about the smartest one in the line when it came to diagnosing plays. He was a hard fighter with the true Bulldog spirit. Butler was acting captain in the Alabama game. Cecil Appleby Guard Cecil is listed as a guard but he could also play center and was the best man on the team for intercepting passes. He led his team in their first vic- tory of the season against U. T. Junior College. R. J. Miller Halfback On a sustained march down the field R. J. was the man called on to make those last needed yards. He was a good blocker and a hard man to stop in open field. He cap- tained the Bulldogs in the Vanderbilt game. WooDRow Wilson Quarterback This boy was fast as greased lightning and the best passer on the team. He won a name for himself by his stellar play in the Alabama game. Harry Green End Converted from a back to an end, Harry continued his deadly tackling and devas- tating blocking. He covered punts well and was a good pass receiver. Harry led the Bulldogs in their first home game against Hiwassee. Bill Loomis Tackle An All-State man and Bill lived up to advance informa- tion. He was always alert to break through the line and block a punt. His play was of the highest type all during the season and he captained the team in the Wesleyan game. 81 David Aaron Tackle This lad was a mountain of strength in the Red line. Fast, aggressive, and hard charging, Dave could be counted on to open up a hole in the line for one of his team- mates. He was captain ol the team in their victory over Sewanee. LiNDSEY DONNELL Halfback Lindsey was heralded as the greatest running back ever to matriculate at Cumberland and he more than lived up to his reputation. As a broken field runner he is une.xcelled. Jerry Bonavita Fullback Jerry was the inspiration of the team and did a fine job of running, kicking, and block- ing. He was the nearest thing to a triple-threat man the Bulldogs had. The team elected him captain for the Rollins game. Eben Gilbert Halfback Towhead was a cool, calm player who always did the right thing. He was always eager to learn and his ability in running and blocking in- creased as the season ad- vanced. Jim Straw bridge End Jim was a natural-born end, tall, rangy, and fast. He was a terror at breaking up plays coming his way and his pass receiving throughout the sea- son was sensational. Bob Lewis End Bob is another smart, alert player who has a bright fu- ture. He was one of the best wingmen on the squad and was always in the thick of the fight. 82 ■ ' ' ' «3?58?!:5P ' ' Sf ' ' Wilson West Center Wilson was a hard fighter and a player who handled his pivot position nicely. His passes were always accurate and his tackling sure. He had the honor of leading the team in the Turkey Day classic against Austin Peay. Wallace Couch Tackle Wallace was a player who put everything he had in the game and he could always be counted on to stave off a rally. He threw fear into the opponents every time he stalked out on the field. Tom Martin Halfback Tom was one of the few men on the squad who had had previous college experience. He was a good passer and a hard man to stop after getting in the open. Carl Clark Guard Carl was not a flashy player but he was one of the most dependable men on the squad. He took his football seriously and could always be depended upon to do his best under all conditions. Dan Simms Guard Dan followed in the footsteps of his brother as an illustrious wearer of the maroon and white. His play was of the highest calibre and he was always an important factor in the Bulldog drives. 83 WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL TEAM RECORD FOR SEASON Cumberland 38 Cumberland 34 Cumberland 39 Cumberland 35 Cumberland 34 Cumberland 24 Cumberland 32 Cumberland 13 Cumberland 27 Cumberland 34 East End Methodist 44 Belleview Independents 39 Methodist All-Stars 22 Belleview Independents 14 Andrew Jackson College 21 Martin College 42 Mt. Juliet Independents 28 84 Mary Ethel Tucker . . . was a newcomer to the ranks of the Co-ed team but she soon made her presence felt and clinched a place in the starting lineup with ease. She was an excellent shot and played hard, clean basketball all the season. She will return next year and continue her fine work for Cumberland. Ophelia Hall ... a veteran member of the team, con- tinued to shoot, pass, and follow with the skill of old. She made an enviable record this season and she will be back again next year to keep her old place on the team. Dot Fults ... is another yearling, who with a little more seasoning will make a top- notch player. She has plenty of enthusiasm and she makes basketball a business, which goes a long way in the development of a player. She will be back for three more years. 85 Catherine McClain . , . finished her second year of activity and was a starter in every game. Her play- ing was of the highest type and she was always quick to get the ball out of dan- gerous territory back to where it belonged. Evelyn Pritchard . . . was without a doubt the best shot on the team, she can sink them from any angle on the floor. Evelyn is just a fresh- man and we predict that she will cause much anguish to opposing guards for the next three years. Martha List . . . while small of stature, was a demon on defense. She was a tenacious and per- sistent type of guard and always had plenty of fight. She was a smart, heads-up player ready to take advantage of the breaks that came her way. Nannie Hibbett . . . was the prize player of the guards. She finished a brilliant career in high school and continued her spectacular work as a member of the Co-ed team. She was the best in the lot of the guards and showed plenty of ability and previous good coach- ing by her play in every game. Sarah Flowers . . . was a temperamental player and when she was right she could not be stopped. Her height was of value to an otherwise short team. She has another year and if she will apply herself seriously to playing she will make a real player. Elsie Winfree . . . was the same wild, rough player who always makes life miserable for oppos- ing forwards. Whenever Elsie was in- jected in a game she was not long in making her presence felt in one way or another. This was her last season as a member of the team. 87 MEN ' S BASKETBALL TEAM RECORD FOR SEASON Cumberland 40 Cumberland 63 Cumberland 24 Cumberland 58 Cumberland . . . Ramblers 42 88 Captain David Prehi da . . . was again the same cool player who has dominated the scoring column in the Bulldog games for the past three seasons. When David was right there was no stop- ping him. He is a good floor man and is always full of fight and pep. Max Tilghman ... a veteran member of the Bulldog squad, wound up his career as a wearer of the maroon and white. His height and de- fense work aided materially in the fights of the Bulldog, and his presence will be sorely missed when the first call goes out to can- didates next year. O Jack Tyner . . . as a freshman, showed rare promise of becoming a future star for Cumberland. Jack always managed to get in the open for a clear shot at the basket and he scored many points during the season. 89 Robert Haralson . . . was the smallest man on the squad but he had no trouble in cutting his man down to his own size. Robert was a player who strove for teamwork, he was a good passer and a clever floor man. He will also be among those missing next year and his place will be hard to fill. Shannon Robison . . . cannot be considered an offensive threat but his defense work stood out in every game. The ball coming off the back- board usually came to rest in his posses- sion. The tip at center was always con- trolled by Shannon and he will be back again next year to continue his good work. Bob Lewis . . . turned out to be one of the most dependable guards on the squad. He was a good floor man and covered loose balls like a hawk. Bob has that indomitable courage and fight which go into the making of a successful athlete. 90 James Speck . . . was the same spectacular scorer that he has been during his four years ' so- journ at Cumberland. He started many a Bulldog rally when injected in the lineup. He was the favorite of local fans with his famous follow shots and he usually obliged. His place will not likely be filled. Prent Morey . . . has the qualifications necessary to make a real star. He performed creditably this season and a bright future seems as- sured him in Smoky Mountain Conference play. He is the rangy type of player, gets off a nice shot and follows well. David Aaron ... is the most adept handler of the ball on the squad. He was the hub of the Bulldog attack, his ability to handle the spot position was all that could be asked. He was not a defensive man but his offense and passing were of the highest calibre. 91 COFFEE SHOP CLUB Intramural Basketball Champions FMESHMEN Interclass Basketball Champions 92 v A U B ? - C P CLUB 94 Anne Kraft Singer Prettiest Girl College of Arts and Sciences Grace Jackson Goddess of Love and Beauty College of Law Frances Bruce Miss Cumberland College of Arts and Sciences Max E.
