The only losses were to Jefferson and Braddock for the class A title. This being the first season with the Mikes as an A school, Mr. Stuvek and his assistant coaches, Mr. Lapkowicz and Mr. OâBrochta, along with the squad should be congratulated on their fine record. We got off to a good start by defeating South Union 26-19. Harry Ellsworth sparked the Mikes with three touchdowns and Harry Nopwasky scored one. We proved to be poor hosts to North Union as we won 26-9 for our second victory. After a scoreless first quarter, Harry Ells- worth broke the ice with an 80 yard run in the second period. Later in the period Ben Rapchak raced 35 yards for the second touch- down. Kenny Townsend set up the third touchdown when he blocked a punt and Har- ry Nopwasky picked up the ball and ran all the way. He also scored the extra point. Freshie halfback, Joe Burvan, darted 10 yards for the last Cumberland touchdown. North Union scored on a safety and a touch- down against Cumberland reserves in the final minutes of the game. The Mikes traveled to Masontown for their third victory. Bob Mahle scored the first Cumberland touchdown in the second half after a fumble recovery deep in Mason- town territory. Several minutes later Mike Kartley nailed a Masontown halfback in his end zone for a safety. Harry Ellsworth made it 14-0 by driving over from the 13 yard line after a long drive by the Mikes. A 50 yard drive climaxed by a 5 yard dash by Joe Bur- van produced the final touchdown. We got our fourth victory at the expense of Georges Township whom we rolled to the tune of 30-0. The Mikes had complete control of the ball during the entire game. With less than 4 minutes gone in the game, Harry Ellsworth finished a long drive when he broke over from the 5 yard line. Ellsworth repeated in the second stanza after a similar drive. Bob Mahle took the second half kickoff on the 20 yard line and galloped the remaining 80 yards for the touchdown. With the reserves playing the rest of the game, Burvan tallied twice, once after a long drive and again on a 70 yard jaunt. The Mikes shellacked Mapletown 46-0 for their fifth victory of the season. Ben Rapchak made the first touchdown early in the game. McPherson converged and later in the first period âJundaâ Mesich caught a Maple in his own end zone for a safety. In the second quarter Harry Ellsworth broke over from the 1 yard line, Harry Nopwasky sped 65 yards for a touchdown, and Harry Ellsworth scored again on a 31 yard run making the score 27-0 at halftime. Bob Mahle intercepted a pass in the third stanza and ran 21 yards to rack up 6 more points. Bob Or- losky ran 81 yards and Joe Burvan picked up a Mapletown fumble and sped 75 yards for the last scores of the game. A missed extra point was the deciding factor as our age-old rival, Jefferson, handed us a 14-13 decision after an extremely hard fought battle by both teams. After the first Jefferson score the Mikes drove all the way to the Rocketâs eleven, only to lose the ball on a pass interception. Later another good drive by the Mikes was stopped because of a fumble. Jefferson scored again on a 72 yard pass making the score 14-0 at halftime. The Mikes really went to work in the second half, giving Jefferson only two first downs and those were on penalties. After a drive of 60 yards which took us 11 plays, Bob Mahle went over for the touchdown. A bad pass from center caused the extra point attempt to be no good. In the last quarter, Harry The three little bears! 65 Nopwasky crashed over from the five and Harry Ellsworth ran the extra point making the final score 14-13. Our boys scored their sixth victory against Waynesburg with a score of 12-7. Harry Ellsworth plunged over from the one yard strip for the first touchdown of the game. Later in the first half, Cumberland drove to the Waynesburg 19 but fumbled. Ben Rapchak topped a 65 yard drive by the Mikes with a 26 yard end run to give us a 12-0 lead in the third quarter. Waynesburg scored in the final seconds to make the final score 12-7. Our next foe was Pt. Marion whom we threw for a 34-6 loss. It was no contest as Pt. Marion made their only touchdown against the freshmen team. Touchdowns were made by Mahle, Ellsworth, Modrick, and Burvan. Bull McPherson converged three extra points and Delbert Whoolery scored one. We handed Beth Joint a 14-6 loss for our eighth victory of the season. Our contest touchdown was set up when Ben Rapchak ran the ball from the 35 yard line to the 9 yard line. Harry Ellsworth scored and âBullâ Mc- Pherson converged. The Bulldogs took the kickoff and drove 75 yards for their score. On the first play after the kickoff Harry Ellsworth ran 63 yards for the second touch- down. McPherson again converged making the final score 14-6. Our last opponent was California who proved to be no match for the Mikes. After a scoreless first quarter, Ben Rapchak set up a touchdown with a 40 yard punt return. Harry Ellsworth scored from the 4 yard line and added the extra point. Bob Mahle scored next after a California fumble. Ells- worth ran the extra point giving land fum- bles in the third stanza. Mahle scored with a 23 yard run and Ellsworth added the point. A 10 yard pass from Rapchak to Mahle gave us the fourth touchdown with Ellsworth again carrying the extra point. In the last minutes of the game Ellsworth scored and added the extra point making the final score 35-12. Our victory over California made us eli- gible for the class A play-offs. We met Brad- dock at Charleroi for the WPIAL Class A Championship. The Mikes werenât in the best of shape for the game for they were minus four start- ers because of injuries. Mike Hartley and Harry Nopwasky were injured in earlier games. Bull McPherson was injured before the California game and Harry Ellsworth was hampered with an ankle injury. We had less than one week to prepare for the game, while Braddock had three weeks to get ready. It was strictly a one-sided game as the Mikes were powerless against the big Braddock team. 66 1. BASKETBALL 1956-1957 With but two lettermen returning from last yearâs squad, Coach Lapkowicz put to- gether a very respectable team. The team compiled an over-all record of 8 wins and 14 losses. The Mikes lost several heartbreakers, including two overtime games to North Union. Their record in league play was 4 wins and 10 losses. The high point of the season was a three game winning streak in which the Mikes defeated Point Marion, Waynes- burg, and Jefferson. Senior Bob McCann was elected captain of the 56-57 team. He was also one of the teamâs top scorers with 255 points. The teamâs scoring was led by Joe Cerqueria who tallied a total of 282 points. The three fig- ure mark was also hit by Ben Rapchak, Eu- gene Barnhart and Harry Nopwasky. Coach Lapkowicz will lose four members from the varsity team. They are Bob Mc- Cann, Eugene Barnhart, Ben Rapchak and Joe Cerqueria. The only returning letterman is Harry Nopwasky. The Junior Varsity team coached by Mr. Lapkowicz and his assistant, Mr. Rumansic, compiled a fine record of 15 wins and 7 losses. 68 Cumberland 38 Bentleyville 56 Cumberland 54 All Saints 43 Cumberland 58 Jefferson 67 Cumberland 41 Bentleyville 44 Cumberland 49 All Saints 56 Cumberland 71 Mapletown 37 Cumberland 57 Mapletown 30 Cumberland 52 German Twp. 62 Cumberland 47 North Union 50 Cumberland 38 South Union 57 Cumberland 72 Georges Twp. 40 Cumberland 37 Redstone 59 Cumberland 63 Point Marion 54 Cumberland 52 Waynesburg 38 Cumberland 67 Jefferson 54 Cumberland 40 German Twp. 54 Cumberland 54 North Union 55 Cumberland 58 South Union 65 Cumberland 72 Georges Twp. 75 Cumberland 46 Redstone 72 Cumberland 68 Point Marion 65 Cumberland 51 Waynesburg 69 INDIVIDUAL SCORING Avc. BASEBALL 1956 1956 was a very successful year for the Mikeâs baseball team as they compiled an im- pressive record of eight wins and two losses. This record enabled the Mikes to tie with Centerville for section honors. With each team having two games left and Centerville sporting an eight and 0 card, the Mikes defeated them 4-3 in one game and Waynesburg did likewise in the other, while Mapletown forfeited its last game to the Mikes. The only two defeats suffered by the Mikes in regular season play were at the hands of Centerville and Waynesburg. The Brownsville High School field was chosen as the site for the play-off game. The game was a real nip-and-tuck affair until the sixth inning when the Mikes pushed two runs across the plate. But in Centervilleâs seventh inning, they managed to score three runs to take the lead. It was now or never as the Mikes came to bat in the seventh. They man- aged to load the bases, but didnât score. The game ended with Centerville on the long end of a three to two score. TRACK AND FIELD 1956 Due to an extremely wet spring the track activities were very limited both in meets and practice sessions. Two events were finally cancelled after several postpone- ments. However, the one event, the County Meet, which calls for the best in our schoolâs spirit and enthusiasm was held at Carmi- chaels, May 9, 1956. At that meet Jefferson- Morgan High School dethroned Mt. Morris as the Greene County Track and Field Cham- pions. Jefferson came through with 49 V- points to edge out Mt. Morris, which tallied 38. West Greene finished in third place with 35 markers while Cumberland and Waynes- burg followed with 311 - and 26 respectively. Three new records were established this year. Waynesburg 880 relay team knocked .2 second from the mark set by a Mt. Morris squad last year. Jack Diehl of Mt. Morris bet- tered both the mark in discus and shotput. He heaved the discus 126' 8 to break the record of 125' 6 held by John Stefanik of Jefferson. Diehl put the shot 46' 5 to break the mark held by Able Churney of Waynes- burg of 45' 7 . Virgili of Jefferson broke the record for 220 yard dash of 23.3 seconds set by Floyd Phillips of Center Township by running the distance in 23 seconds. He also took first place in 100 yard dash and javelin. 76 100 YARD DASHâWon by Virgili, Jef- ferson ; 2 â Livingston, Cumberland; 3 â Long, Mt. Morris; 4âBrock, Mt. Morris; 5â Smith, Cumberland.
