Opponents 10 points average per game. 72 After having a small inexperienced squad last year, the Cumberland Mikes showed much spirit and power this year. Lead by our head coach, Mr. Fred Stuvek, as- sisted by Mr. Anthony O’Brochta and Mr. Lapkowicz, the team ended up the season with a 6-3 record. The Mikes first encounter this year was with South Union. After a 56 yard drive, “Serb” Krewasky scored on a quarterback sneak from about the six inch line. South Union had several opportunities to score from eleven and seven yard lines, but failed each time. Cumberland was beaten 8-0 in the second encounter by North Union. The Mikes fought hard and out played the Rams but received some bad breaks. The Rams tallied their touchdown and safety in the final four minutes of the game. Serb” Krewasky, back to pass, dropped the ball while being tackled. It was picked up by the Ram’s left end. They got their safety when Don Whipkey fell down in the end zone after catching a pass. The Mikes got their second victory of the season by defeating Masontown 19-6. In the first quarter the Gunners fumbled and after a series of driyes, “Serb” Krewasky threw a pass to Don Whipkey for a touch- down. Gdovka’s conversion was good. The Gunners scored in the second quarter, after a sustained drive of 56 yards. The Mikes scored twice in the third quarter as Harry Ellsworth went over from the 8 yard line and Krewasky went over on a keeper play from about the 15 yard line. Cumberland traveled to Georges to get their third victory of the season. After a scoreless first quarter the Mikes tallied in each of the three remaining quarters to get the decision. “Arkie” Smith topped a 60 yard drive in the second quarter by going over from the 4 yard line. In the third quarter, Bill Rohland claimed a 65 yard drive by bucking into the end zone from the 2 yard line. “Gus” Gdovka’s second straight conversion split the upright to bring the score to 14-0. Georges scored a touchdown on a 52 yard run by Wilbur West, bur it was nullified by a penalty. The Mikes climaxed the scoring in the final quarter; moving the ball 40 yards goalward. Don Whipkey scored by crashing over the goal line from the seven yard line. Our boys racked up their fourth victory of the season by scoring a decisive victory over Mapletown to the tune of 33-7. This gave Coach Stuvek a chance to clear the bench. The first score came in the opening minutes of the game on a 50 yard pass play from Ben Rapchak to “Arkie” Smith. Later in the first quarter Ben Rap- chak rolled out to the left on a keeper play and ran 25 yards into pay dirt. Smith ceased Mapletown’s attempts of scoring by intercepting a pass and going 25 yards for his second touchdown. “Gus” Gdovka split the uprights twice while “Arkie” Smith made good his attempt for the extra point. After a scoreless third quarter John Rapchak fell on a fumble and Harry Ellsworth went 2 yards for a tally. Mapletown also scored in the fourth quarter against the Mikes substitutes. Cumberland was eliminated from the WPIAL Class B race by Jefferson’s strong team which was held score- less until Dukate blocked a punt and ran 20 yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter Jefferson scored twice with Ferenchak plunging from the four and Vir- gin passing 11 yards to Fisher in the end zone. The final tally came when Knight went to pay dirt from the two. Sonny Harr made 5 straight conversions for the Jeffs. This win by Jefferson made the series between these two county rivals 12-12 with four games ending in ties. The Mikes beat Waynesburg 6-0 for their fifth vic- tory of the season. A first quarter fumble,recovered by Joe Cequeira on the 8 yard line, paved the way for a victory for the Mikes. The county-seaters lead in first downs n-io and once moved the ball up to the Mikes 10 yard line. The Mikes beat Waynesburg 6-0 for their fifth vic- tory of the season. A first quarter fumble, recovered by the game, Point Marion rolled on for the first score. Bob Mahle made two touchdowns in the third quarter, one touchdown from the 47 yard line and the other from the 10 yard line. Harry Ellsworth and Bob Mahle both tallied in the fourth quarter. “Gus” Gdovka made two out of four conversions to bring the score to 26-6. Cumberland was overpowered 28-18 by Beth Joint in the final game of the season. At halftime the Bulldogs lead 14-0. In the third quarter the Bulldogs scored again and lead 21-0. After a drive, Don Whipkey scored from the five. Harry Ellsworth tallied our second score. A1 Campbell scored for Beth Joint from the two after a long drive. This year’s team showed a season’s record of 7 wins and 14 losses. Although the team’s record is not too impressive, the players and the coach, Mr. Lapkowicz, deserve a lot of credit. The team’s top scorers were Arkie Smith, Eugene Barnhart, Milos Krewasky, and Joe Cerqueira. Each had a total of over 100 points with Smith being high with 312. The team’s most impressive wins were over Waynesburg, Mapletown, and Jef- ferson. They suffered several close defeats, losing to Point Marion by four points, to All-Saints by three points, and to Bethlehem Joint and Bentleyville by five points each. In the final game of the season, the Mikes’ undergraduate team upset Bentleyville, 64 to 60, for their seventh win of the season. The senior members of the team are Arkie Smith, Milos Krewasky, Rusty Novak, Bill Bober, and Robert McLaughlin. The returning players are Eugene Barnhart, Joe Cerqueira, Robert McCann, Delbert Whollery, Ben Rapchak, and Mike Lucas. Morris High dethroned Jefferson High as the Greene County Track and Field Champions in the an- nual meet which was held at Carmichaels this year. The Black Hawks racked up a total of 58 points to gain the first place crown. Jefferson was second with 51 points; Cumberland third with 33 points; W’aynes- burg fourth with 21 points; W’est Greene fifth with 15 points and Mapletown sixth with one point. Two new records were set and another one was just missed. Mt. Morris’ 880 relay team knocked 7 10 of a second off rhe mark set by W'aynesburg in 1953. Bill Burris of Mt. Morris broke the record for the 880 yard dash of 2:09.6 seconds set by Rockwell of W’aynesburg by running the distance in 2:08.9 seconds. BASEBALL 1955 The Mikes opened a very successful baseball season by defeating East Beth 6-2 in a contest played at Carmichaels. After giving up two runs in the first inning, Del- bert Sloneker, Bill Rohland and Ben Rapehak pitched hitless ball the rest of the game. With Jim Walters’ double and triple and Rapchak’s two hits, Cumberland had begun its victorious season. Cumberland kept its slate clean as they downed Brownsville 2-0 for their second victory of the season in a game played at Brownsville. The Mikes scored one run in both the first and fifth innings. In the first inning Bill Rohland received a walk anc then advanced to third on a single by Ben Rapehak. He scored when Milos Kre- wasky laid down a bunt. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Jim Walters laid down a squeeze bunt and forced Harry Ellsworth across the plate. Nine Mikes fanned the breeze while seven Brownies bit the dust. Four players from each team received a free ticket to first base. Scoring three runs in the fifth inning, Cumberland clinched a 7-4 victory over Waynesburg on the latter’s field. The Red Raiders jumped oft to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. A single by Ellsworth in the top of the second inning drove in Sloneker who tripled, and Smith who walked to put the Mikes ahead 2-1. In the bottom half of the second, Waynesburg knotted the count at 2-2. Both teams scored runs in the fourth inning. The Mikes got their run when Smith scored on an error by Carroll. The Mikes put together a walk, a single, a double, and a triple to score three runs in the fifth inning to ice the game. Krewasky led off the inning with a single and ad- vanced to second on a single by Gdovka. The double steal was enacted with Kre- wasky moving over to third and Gdovka to second. Then Sloneker smacked out a double to score both Krewasky and Gdovka. Smith tripled to score Sloneker. Each team tallied one run in the sixth inning to close out the scoring. 84 The Mikes held on to their first place spot by winning over Waynesburg 8-2 in a Section 22 encounter at Carmichaels. The Mikes jumped off to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Rohland strolled to first on a free ticket and advanced to second on a wild throw. Ben Rapchak was safe on an error. Krewasky rapped out a single to drive in Rohland with the first run and advance Rapchak to second. Then Sloneker blasted out a two bagger, but Rapchak was out at home trying to score. A single by Smith drove in Krewasky while Sloneker and Smith scored on Barnhart’s single. The Red Raiders bounced back with one run in their half of the third inning. The Mikes pushed across two runs in both the third and fifth innings to build up an 8-1 lead. Waynesburg got its other tally in the sixth frame. The brief rally ended when Stoner struck out. Errors counted heavily against the losers. The victory gave the Mikes a 3-0 record. After dropping an 8-7 encounter to Mapletown, Cumberland bounced back to down the Maples 5-0 in the second game of a double-header at Carmichaels. In the first game Mapletown racked up three runs in the first inning and four more in the second while the Mikes got three to give Mapletown a 7-3 lead. Single by Wilson and Elnecker, a double by Bill Lewis, and a triple by George Lewis gave the Maples their three runs in the first. In the second inning the victor blasted out four singles and were aided by a Cumberland error to rack up four more runs. All of the Mikes’ runs in the first inning were unearned. Both Jiohland and Bober were safe on errors. Then Sloneker hit a ball on to left field and Cottage dropped it. On the throw in, Gregan booted the ball allowing three Mike runs to score. The Mikes added one run in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but could not cut the lead of the Maples. Mapletown was shut out in the second game on a one-hitter by Sloneker. The Mikes’ hurler struck out 11 batters while walking one. In the second frame Gdovka led off with a single and stole second. Jim Walters strolled to first when he was hit. Both runners advanced on a double steal. Ellsworth hit a grounder to Hood at short but he bobbled the ball allowing Gdovka and Walters to score. Ellsworth blasted out a triple in the fifth inning, but there was an error on the throw in and he scored. The loss of the first game by Cumberland moved Jefferson within a half a game of the league leaders. The Mikes had a 4-1 slate, while the Rockets were second with a 3-1 record. Mapletown now had a 2-3 record. Cumberland High won the Section 22 title by beating Jefferson in a game played at Mather. Delbert Sloneker scattered four Jefferson hits, thus limiting the Rockets to one run in the first inning while the Mikes got John Trout for nine one-base blows in chalking up their four runs. Jefferson got its lone tally when Lloyd Bigler scored on a single by Don Tekavec. Cumberland took the lead in the second inning when it pushed two runs across the plate. Eugene Barnhart led off the inning with a single. He scored on an error on a blow by Jim Walters. Then Walters gave the Mikes the lead when he scored on Rohland’s one-base clout. The Mikes racked up two more runs in the fifth frame. Sloneker led off with a single and advanced to second when Gdovka was hit by Trout. Smith was safe on a fielder’s choice with Sloneker scoring. “Gus” Gdovka came home with the final run on a single by Barn- hart. With this victory of 4-1 over Jefferson, the Mikes clinched the sectional title and the opportunity to participate in the WPIAL play-offs. The Mikes were bounced by Brownsville n-o in the first round of the WPIAL play-offs at Fredricktown. Grover pitched and batted the Brownies to victory. He gave up only two hits while striking out ten of the Mikes’ batters and walking only two. This time a spirited Brownsville team would not be denied.
