It is with great pride and pleasure that your growth socially, as well as physically, mental- ly, and morally is observed as you assume the responsibilities of carrying out these pro- grams. I congratulate you and offer my sin- cere best wishes to all. D. P. Venen MR. D. P. VENEN Principal Many years ago someone said, “True order of learning should be—first, what is necessary; next, what is useful; and then, what is ornamental.” As I accept this oppor- tunity to congratulate the class of 1953, I trust that we have not strayed too far from that “true order of learning.” J. William Kerr MR. J. W. KERR Assistant Principal BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education wishes this school to keep the ideals of Americanism as set forth by our forefathers. We endeavor to preserve these ideals for future generations and to guard against any false doctrines which aim to destroy our freedom and way of life. It is the ambition of the Board of Education to maintain the high standards for which the school was instituted. In this way we hope to send out a class better prepared to take a place in world affairs each year. Wilbur Lint, President W. LINT President J. MIORANZA W. BOBER F. VOLCHKO V. Under the capable leadership of coaches A1 Cree and Fred Stuvek, the 1952 edition of the Mikes, which captured the first WPIAL Class B Championship in the school’s history, could well be considered the greatest football machine ever assembled at C.T.H.S. The team record speaks for itself. It can be seen that the Mikes were both a top flight offensive and defensive aggregation as can be seen by the fact that the Mikes scored an average of 30 points per game while holding the opposition to an average of 5 points per game. The material of this squad was not the best ever had by a coach at this school, but such important factors as leadership, team spirit, and above all, team work, were vital to the aspirations of the ball club. After four weeks of rigid practice, the Mikes found themselves host to the South Union Blue Devils in their home opener. The Devils were aggressive, but they lacked suf- ficient offensive power to overcome the Mikes and went home sporting a 19-0 loss at the hands of the Creemen. The Mikes’ next opponent was East Beth, where on a muddy field at Fredericktown the home team was soundly trounced 31-6 by a Carmichael’s squad that showed signs of pos- sessing a strong offense. A young and inexperienced Masontown eleven was the next opponent for the Cree- men. The Mikes really opened their offensive power with a 45-0 victory over the Gunners. This was one of the largest spread of points that either team had ever assembled in their long traditional rivalry. A big and experienced eleven from North Union came to town next in a bid for a vic- tory, but the Rams picked the wrong night to make this bid, for they also went home as one of the victims of the Mikes, losing a hard fought battle 19-0. Mapletown greeted us with a sloppy, mud- dy field, but it took more than the combined efforts of the Leafs and Mother Nature to lick the Mikes on this occasion for the read- ing of the scoreboard revealed the Mikes to be the victor by the score 40-7. The next game of the season brought to- 64 — FOOTBALL gether two unbeaten teams both struggling to remain in the WPIAL race, when the Mikes journeyed to Jefferson before a crowd of nearly 7,000 spectators. Jefferson had the en- viable record of having played twenty games without suffering defeat. After a hard fought battle the Mikes ended up the victor 20-0. This victory helped to gather points which eventually enabled the Mikes to enter the Class B Playoffs. The Red Raiders of Waynesburg came to town as the next foe for the Mikes, and after the traditional rivals had fought with every conceivable device in their power, the Mikes were on top 40-13. In their next home encounter the Mikes met the big, strong Brownies from Browns- ville. This game which was one of the hardest fought games of the season, saw the Mikes keeping their unbeaten status as they fought back numerous Brownie charges, while rack- ing up another 19-6 victory. A tough Glassport squad came to town in the Mikes’ last regular season game with the idea of knocking the Creemen out of the Class B race, but the Mikes could not be deprived TEAM SCORING C.T.H.S. 19 South Union 0 C.T.H.S. 31 East Beth 6 C.T.H.S. 45 Masontown 0 C.T.H.S. 19 North Union 0 C.T.H.S. 40 Mapletown 7 C.T.H.S. 20 Jefferson 0 C.T.H.S. 40 Waynesburg 13 C.T.H.S. 19 Brownsville 6 C.T.H.S. 41 Glassport 12 C.T.H.S. 40 Zelienople 14 C.T.H.S. 12 Wilmerding 6 326 59 of this privilege as they outscored the Glass- ers 41-14. When statistics revealed the Mikes were in a second place tie with Zelienople, the Mikes journeyed to Wilkinsburg for a special play- off clash. But the Mikes were determined they were not going to Wilkinsburg for the ride, and came home high from their fresh 40-13 victory over Zelienople. The Mikes now traveled to Charleroi, where the Wildcats of Wilmerding, defending Class B Co-Champ, were striving to retain the title. In one of the most exciting games of the year, the Mikes, after holding the Wildcats in a desperation try for victory, went home with a victory and the Class B Championship. Jerome Urda received a trophy from the Lions Club for being, in their opinion, the most valuable player on the football squad. Urda, Ward, Kaprive, Nopwasky, Jazwa, Cielensky, Colbert, Haught, and Krutko were all mentioned on one or all of the All-County teams by the various newspapers. Urda, Ward, and Krutko were named on the WPIAL Team. Urda was given honorable mention on the All-State team. — 65 - ♦Class B Playoffs Coach’s little helpers. Norbert “Lanky” Schifko was our high point man. He dropped in an average of 23 points per game for a season total of 509 which eclipsed the county record set by Waynesburg’s Ed McKenna in ’52. “Lanky” also set a school record for points in one game with 38 against West Beth. BASEBALL-1 952 Although an acute shortage of pitchers pre- vailed at the beginning of the season, A1 Cree and his Mikes came through with a very suc- cessful baseball squad to regain the baseball championship of Greene County. The Mikes were led by Joe “Stumpy” Ste- hulak who had a 10 game winning streak go- ing up to the Perryopolis game. “Chuckie” Grimm also played an important role in the success of the club. Joe Rumancik led all batters on the squad with his .462 batting average. “Yogi” Jazwa also was up in the high circles with a .367 average. After running straight through their section without a loss, the Mikes were engaged in the WPIAL playoffs. They first traveled to Mas- ontown where they met the Uniontown Red Raiders and trimmed the Raiders 2-0. Then the Mikes hit the road to Brownsville where they met Perryopolis. This time the Mikes were not equal to the occasion but put up a hard fought battle losing 6-4. The Mikes lost seven lettermen but the re- maining part of the squad will be back to carry on. Their school fans hope that they will be the nucleus of another championship team.
