The voices of teachers and stu- dents are heard in the classrooms, in the halls, and on the athletic field. Both new and fami- liar faces turn to the faculty for inspiration and to one another for friendship. The footsteps of students and teachers alike are seen in the many accomplishments of our school. We hope that this yearbook will enable you always to hear these voices, to see the upturned faces, and to retrace the footsteps. Contents Administration and Faculty . 0 Classes Activities Advertisements . 3 Dedication MISS BESSIE LOU PARKER Nowhere could we find a person more deserving of this dedication which we are making without her knowledge or con- sent. Her untiring efforts to assist, not only in the production of our yearbook but in every activity of the school, have been constant. Her high ideals have inspired each of us to nobler work. Because we love and respect her, we dedicate to Miss Bessie Lou Parker, yearbook sponsor, librarian, and teacher, the DUKE of 1959. Administration During our high school days we have had many problems as well as many good times, but down the path where our feet have trod we have had much wise counsel. All through the years there have been those who have faithfully stood by us, ready and willing to help us with all our needs and to guide our footsteps in the right direction. Whatever has been achieved, we know that we owe much of the credit to our principal and teachers. SCHOOL BOARD Mr. T. J. McIlwaine, Mr. R. C. Altizer Mr. Charlie Goodman, Mr. H. T. These extracurricular activities are a very im- portant part of our school life. It is through these organizations that we begin to plant our footprints firmly here at Cumberland. We de- velop leadership, initiative, a sense of respon- sibility, an appreciation of good sportsmanship, and other qualities which will influence our lives forever. By taking part in these activi- ties we develop lasting friendships and assoc- iations that will go with us through the years. OQ Vo Da Yo KS P. Gamage, Girls’ Sport Editor; C. Carolyn Shores and Grace Ashburn col- lected the only homers for the team, Grace belting a grand-slam home run in the sec- ond game against Amelia. Other hitting support came from Ruby Stout, Betty Jo Rousch, Barbara Martin, Bonnie Baker, and Patsy Gamage. After the shower room had been in- stalled and equipment received, they started practice. A scrimmage with Pow- hatan and an exhibition game between the two squads of the team were watched with pride and enjoyment by students, faculty, and patrons. In addition, discus throwing created much interest. The team members also actively participated in running events such as the hundred-yard dash, the mile, and various relays. Valuable experience was gained at a district meet at Hampden-Sydney College and a three-school meet at Powhatan. This page sponsored by GRAY'S DRUG STORE, INC. Jimmy Tillett hurls the discus as Joe Asal puts the shot. 37 The Cumberland Dukes closed their sea- son with a record of eight wins and two losses. The team moved into District Three which put them up against greater competi- tion this year. Claude Meinhard, a junior, hung up a record of two no-hitters and a one-hit game. He averaged two strike-outs per inning. Claude also was the leading batter for the season. His skill in playing attract- ed the attention of Major League scouts. Other leading batmen were Spanky Pleasants, Jimmy Frayser, and Johnny Asal. Edmund Garnett, a senior, made an excel- lent captain and did a fine job of center- fielding. Meet Me at the Prom , a three act comedy, was presented by the Cumberland High seniors on December 6, 1958. As the play unfolded it showed the fun and trials encountered by the seniors of Central High as they prepare for a Thanks- giving Prom. This was one of the most enjoyable pro- jects of the seniors in their efforts to raise funds for their class trip. 41 The Statue of Liberty proved exciting for all. Pictured here are, IST ROW: B. A Thank You TO OUR PARENTS: We thank you for your constant help and guidance in all our school life. We thank you especially for your patience and understanding when our many activities keep us away from home and keep the family car in continual use. Most of all we thank you for being shining examples whose foot- steps we may safely follow. TO OUR TEACHERS: We owe to you our thanks for your untiring efforts to teach us that we may know what life has to offer and how we can best equip ourselves for it. You have worked long and hard and made many sacrifices that we may enjoy the pleasures of clubs and athletics in our school organization. There is no way we can thank you enough for this help and guidance. TO OUR ADVERTISERS: We, the yearbook staff, cannot thank you enough for your support. Without you the production of this yearbook, to which we look forward each year and cherish for many years, would not be possible. Each teacher and student joins us in saying thank you many, many times. TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS: To you our wish is that you enjoy the pleasures of this book for many years as much as we, the staff, have en- joyed producing it. We thank you for subscribing and hope that this book will always be a reminder of the foot- prints you made at Cumberland High School in 1959.
