PRESIDENT Charles Womack The Student Cooperative Association started the year with a magazine campaign, the proceeds of which went to the individ- val class treasuries. Later in the year, the rousing political campaigns of those aspiring to become officers of the student body created great in- terest. Eldridge Blanton from the Cumberland club was chosen president of the newly formed Heart-of-Virginia Federation. A. won a plaque for being the out- standing chapter in the Piedmont Fed- eration for the year. Edmund Garnett, from the Cumberland chapter, was president of this federation. For the fourth consecutive year, the chapter won superior rating in the State Chapter Contest. Two boys, Charles Womack and David Erwin, won the coveted State Farmers' title. The chapter improved the school grounds and held a Father-Son Banquet. Nellie Mae Stonnell was Chap- ter Sweetheart for the year. The F. H. A. girls prepared three blue ribbon booths at the Five County Fair this year, cheered the sick in the commu- nity, and entertained their parents on Parents' Night. Also, the F. H. A.- F. F. Cumberland proved strong in two im- portant spots - pitching and hitting. Claude Meinhard measured up to the expectation of Coach Ed Vassar by winning all league games. Edmund Garnett hit .533 for the season, and Jimmy Frayser's batting average was .500. Two other top batsmen were Johnny Asal and Bobby Adams. The theme, Dancing in the Dark , was beautifully carried out with the colors blue and white. Everyone enjoyed the music of Butler's orchestra. Graduation exercises began Sunday morning June 1, when Rev. F. P. Look, the Methodist minister of the Cumberland charge, deliver- ed the baccalaureate sermon. On Thursday morning, June 5, the traditional class day exercises were held. The class day program in- cluded the class history, prophecy, and the last will and testament. At this time, S. C. A. officers were in- stalled and agricultural and baseball awards as well as those to Boys' State and Girls' State were made. GRADUATION 40 Now graduates of Cumberland High School, the Class of 1958, march forward with high hopes for the future. On that long anticipated night when the seniors for the last time marched down the aisles of Cumberland High School auditorium, Dr. Woodrow Wilkerson of the State Department of Education challenged them with an inspiring speech. After Mr. Smith presented the diplomas, outstanding seniors were recog- nized. Betty Jones and Bill Pleasants received the citizenship awards and Thelma Heath received the Farm Bureau scholarship.
