Che Duke of Cumberland Inasmuch as our county is named for the Duke of Cumberland, we have deemed it appropriate to honor him further by calling our school yearbook The Duke . He was born in 1721, the second son of King George II and Queen Caroline of England. At five years of age he was created The Duke of Cumberland, He excelled in out- door sports and received the finest schooling available. After an unsuc- cessful attempt at a naval career, he joined the army in 1742 as a major- general. The Duke commanded British forces in Europe, but after an unsuc- cessful campaign was recalled to put down a rebellion in Scotland. Here he won his greatest victory, but the ruthlessness with which he handled the uprising earned for him the nick- name of Butcher . This however, is said to be an unjust taunt which was bestowed upon him by his political enemies. His great victory in Scotland made him very popular with the Eng- lish people. Military defeats in later campaigns, though, caused public sen- timent to turn against him and he was forced to retire to private life. Al- though he was no longer connected with the military, he continued to serve his country. He took an active interest in the nation's political af- fairs and did much to help the common people by supporting their candidates for public offices. Through these and other ventures, the tide of public opin- ion turned once again, this time in his favor. He became almost as popular as he had been in his youth. In 1765 he died, a national hero. The Duke of Cumberland is said to be truly representative of the times in which he lived, so it is with much pride that we name our school annual The Duke after him.
