CLASS HISTORY OF THE SENIORS OF 54 Our Senror Class began makrng hrstory four years ago when we met together for the first trme and enrolled as freshmen at Cumberland Hrgh School That was the be grnnrng of one of the happrest perrods of our lrves After the wonder and excitement of being rn hrgh school subsrded we began making plans for the future Our first Job was to organize our class We elected Mrss Harrrs as class Sponsor Jerry Wrlson President Bobby Newman Vrce Presrdent Juanrta Mrr Secretary Dorothy Rrchards Treasurer and Russell Pardue Sergeant at arms Several of us seemed possessed wrth athletrc abrlrtres de crded to try our luck at sports Barbara Haynre and Juanrta Mrr were elected cheerleaders and they held thrs posrtron for therr entrre hrgh school career Barbara was also our foot ball queens attendant her freshman year Our first year at Cumberland was a lrttle drfferent from other freshman classes We were not the youngest of the hrgh school for the erghth grade had been added to the enrollment Other attractions that were rnrtrated that first year were a new prrncrpal Mr A E Wright and a musrc and art de partments We were specrally proud of our band those havrng a four year record are Olrver Abernathy and Tyler Mrlls Lora Mar Dozrer has a four year record as a majorette Havrng a musrc and art department helped to uncover some of the talent rn our class Bobby Smrth and Clarence Jackson began to parnt and draw lrke professronals and Clarence also began hrs srngrng career Two of our songsters Dorothy Richards and Juanita Mrr sang a song about monkeys and walked away with Hrst prrze rn the Crvrtan Talent Contest Dont let these song brrds fool you though they could never have gotten along wrthout the prano playrng of Katherrne Young and Anrta Trdwell When we returned to school rn the fall of 52 we found to our great sorrow that several of our students had moved away But we were glad to have Buford Sudberry Sue Johnson and Emma Lee Wade wrth us Srnce we were now more famrlrar wrth the procedures of gettrng the year started we lost no trme rn organrzrng our sophomore class We elected Jerry Wrlson President Dorothy Rrchards Vrce President Juanrta Mrr Secretary Barbara Haynre Treasurer and Bobby Smrth Sergeant at Arms wrth Mrs Johnson as our Sponsor Cumberlands Student Councrl was organrzed durrng our Sophomore year Thrs councrl has proved to be very suc cessful and helpful Our class was represented rn the stu dent councrl by Hubert Estes Sarah Howse Anrta Trdwell and Jerry Wilson The boys rn our class really put new lrfe into the football squad! Drcky Arrrngton Clarence Jackson Bobby Smrth Brlly Joe Breedlove Charles Cowell Randolph Wrlson Jerry Wrlson and Davrs Dickerson almost made a team of therr own The grrls had their share of athletrc abrlrty too Dorothy Rrchards proved to be one of the best basketball forwards Coach Ferebee had ever seen Others going out for basket ball were Frances Harrison Sylvra Hooper Emma Lee Wade and Madalyn Rakes On the cheerrng squad we were Joined by Mamre Ann Smrth who had formerly been a majorette Dot Richards was elected football queens attendant It drdn t seem possrble that two years of our hrgh school career had already passed and we were ready to start the thrrd The new wrng of our burldrng had been completed so the seventh grade were added to the enrollment This year we elected the followrng as our class officers Clarence Jackson Aubrey Gregory Dorothy Rrchards Juanita Mrr and Bobby Newman Mrs ohnson was our Sponsor and we had already planned onJ having her for our senror year Dot Richards who had been our Future Farmers chorce for the past three years ran rn the county contest for her second year Our student councrl representatives were Katherrne Young Clarence Jackson and Jerry Wrlson Our home coming queens attendant was Emma Lee Wade We were glad to have Dean Whrttemore and Judy Yawn as the new comers to our class but agarn thrs year there were several dropped out Marvrn Jrnnettes talent for basketball put Cumberland on the map when he was selected as a forward on the All Tournament team of 53 Other Junrors who made the school team were Charles Cowell Jerry Wrlson Billy Joe Breedlove Aubrey Gregory and Drcky Arrrngton We were also well represented on baseball and track teams too On the baseball team were Aubrey Gregory Bobby Smrth Brlly Scruggs Drcky Arrrngton Jerry Wrlson and Charles Cowell Bobby Nlewman Randolph Wrlson and Mar vrn Jrnnette drd equally well rn track The football team suffered a casualty rn the Junror year when Clarence Jackson recerved an rnjury This loss was compensated for rn part by the addrtron of Brlly Brnkley Buford Sudberry and Nlarvrn Jrnnette Our first brg success rn dramatrcs was the Junror play For Petes Sake Every member of the class had a part rn the production and we were able to take the senrors to Montgomery Bell Park Goodness! Wrll we ever forget that day We were very drsappornted when we awoke to find the day cloudy and rarny but we were so determrned to have fun that we put on our glad rags and went rrght ahead We earned on qurte a campargn for the electron of Stu dent Councrl officers for 53 and 54 The successful candr dates were Clarence Jackson President Bobby Smrth Vrce Presrdent Katherrne Young Secretary and Davrd Hunt Treasurer Amta Trdwell a good all around grrl and wmner of several Forensrc awards was grven the Grrls Volunteer State award Well can rt be possrble that we are semors at last and that our goal seems to be rn sight? Yes I guess that was true for as we returned to school there was talk of our rrngs berng ready and what we would wear for our prctures We were sorry to see Wir Wrrght leave after three suc cessful years but srnce good rs often replaced by good we have acquired a wonderful prrncrpal rn the person of Mr Harrrs We lost nrne very good students durrng the summer of 53 these were replaced rn part by Ruth Baggett W C Drm non and 'Nlancy Johnson who Just had to come back to Cumberland for her graduation Also Kenneth Hall who was so rndustrrous he went to summer school rn order that he might become a senror Kenneth has been very out standrng rn Forensrc and Student Councrl work and as manager of the ball teams We elected officers as soon as possrble so that we could get along with our work They were as follows Jerry Wrl son Randy Wrlson Anrta Trdwell Tyler Xlrlls and Marvin Jrnnette Sarah Howse was our queens attendant and Lora Mar Dozrer our carnrval queen Our boys basketball team was ggatly pepped up by the addrtron of Bobby Smrth who played for the Hrst time thrs year He and Clarence have also won several art contests The Student Councrl offrcers and Xlrs Evans went to El Paso Texas thrs year and Olrver Abernathy Edgar Sanders Brlly Scruggs and Randolph Wrlson went to Chrcago on a F F A trrp Rayburn Holt 'Randolph Wrlson and Olrver Abernathy also went to Knoxvrlle with Mr Evans Vlrss Lewrs took Jane Tanksley and Dorothy Rrchards to Knox vrlle on a Varsity Vrsrt to U T We havent selected our senror play yet and when thrs annual will go to press heaven only knows but we are lookrng forward to the followrng events The Junror Senror trrp our Baccalaureate sermon Vfay 22 and last but certainly not least our graduatron May 27 There are tears rn my eyes as I recall these wonderful memo rres and I only hope that each Senror who receives hrs drploma thrs year will have as happy and prosperous future as our past has been at Cumberland I-Irgh School JUANITA Mm JANE TANKSLEY 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 .
