CLASS HISTCRY YVe senlors bellexe ll or not were once a w1ld bunch of httle freshmen September of 1947 saw seventy five seared and lost creatures called freshmen by the upperclassmen enrolled at Cumberland High School XVe all llked the sound of the name glven us so me adopted the word freshmen as our offtclal title It was then that we decided to become an organized group of high school creatures xvllh Mrs Murff as our sponsor me elected our class officers We elected uanlta Elrod presldent Emlly Netll VVaIker v1ce president Arthur ones secretary and Bud Selllck treasurer ean Hesson was elected cheerleader and football queen attendant Several of us went out for the various other athletlcs such as football basketball and base ball Soon we learned that the book racks were not tn the girls restroom and we shouldnt put our gym clothes ln the desks 1n Mrs Murffs room Mr Edwards was extra n1ce to all of us so pretty soon we felt like maybe wed stay a vshtle Xvhen we entered classes in September of 48 we were much older fa whole vear than when we entered before and proceeded to act as all sophomores do Of course me had become quite dlgmhed and sophlstlcated fall except Eugene Cheeta Potts our favorite clown YVe lost several classmates durmg the summer a few Miss Buchanan as our sponsor we elected Buddy McWh1rter to the OHICC of president Bud Selllck vice president and a newcomer Dtmple Lynn secretary with uanlta Elrod treasurer and ack Dopey Phelps as sergeant at arms Dlmple and oan were elected cheerleaders Glenn Red Breedlove was woted as Most Valuable Player on the football squad Our Junior year mas one well all remember for a long t1me Mr Foster was our new prln clpal and loved by everyone Bud Sellxck pres tdent Frances Breedlove vice presldent Peggy Morrls secretary Dlmple Lynn treasurer and Sonny ones sergeant at arms After watchlng our football field get torn up during our sopho more year we were glad to see them put It back together in such nice order durlng our junlor year The field was dedicated to Mr Evans dur 1ng an impressive ceremony on Home Comlng night joan Pardue was football queen attend ant Carol Dlmple and oan represented the tumors in the cheerleader group Red Breed love and Sonny ones made AllC1ty in football The new Pep Squad Beta Club and school paper were among the firsts added during our Junlor year One of our outstanding events was the tumor play Oh Promlse Me The play made enough money for us to treat the SCHIOFS to an all day ptcnlc at Youth Incorporated s Country Place Ive spent all our time lther playmg ball eating or swlmmmg Everybody had a wonder ful time even our student lifeguard who trted to drovtn himself 1n his Cllvlllg helmet Sexeral other smaller partles dotted our junior year School ended Mlfh final cunts just as ll always does but llIlS llITlC is seemed dlfferent we had become seniors A lot of us were dlsappolnted when we ar rned at school tn the fall of l050 Our school building was changed the rooms had been mot ed the elghth grade ws is enrolled and to top it all off we had a new prtnctp l Instead of being the btg shots and alnnghty sentors we had planned to be we were almost as bad off as the freshmen BCIIIQ a senior dldn t feel any blgger or mote lmportant than being a sophomore or junior But soon me found our may around and dlscoxered a beautlful and tmproxed build Ing and the eighth graders ueren t such a bad lot and our principal Mr VVr1ght turned out to be tops and we hope he stays at Cumberland a long t1me IVe all pltched tn and got the ball to rollmg and selected Nlrs Ewans to be our class sponsor and Mrs Schutt to be our annual sponsor Bud was elected presldent aga1n and Patty Hunt uce president oan Pardue was elected secretarv and Buddv MclVh1rter treas urer Sew eral SCHIOYS were outstandmg this year tn football and Buddy Nlclklhxrter made All Cxty IH basketball sex eral tlmes oan Pardue became ball ueen Xxonne Ralnbolt Joined the ranks ulth our other three senior cheerleaders oan Dlmple and Carol ames True mon a trip to St Louis for outstanding FFA work The first big deal promoted bv the senlor class was of course the senior play Plaln ane The Jumors and semors had 1 httle Chrlstmas party together too And dont forget the seniors who worked behlnd the concessions stand during all the football and basketball games this IS where the money for both the annual and senior trip IS coming By putting all money from the play and concessions together we should hate enough for the two The annual is being printed and were looking forward to the coming exents I etter Banquet Senior Alumnl Banquet unlor SCHIOT trip Baccalaureate Sermon and at last graduation' Of the sexenty fiwe orlglnal mem bers of our class there are thlrty SIX left Our hngers are crossed that each of us will be able to march across the stage and Wllh nervous hands grasp the dlploflla that we hate worked so long to acquire -Xs me fellows Sll munching frozen Spam somewhere ln Stberla and duck an occa sional Russian made shell and our senior g1rls s1t at home wonderlng if we remembered to duck we will all keep close IU our hearts the four memorable
