A simple question? True Yet in our answer. Many words come through. What has she done? Shall we name diverse deeds? She gave herself. To fill our many needs. The many classes she taught with willingness. The parties that sprang from paper to hours of fun at the touch of her hand. The many from all over this area who still find her a joy to know. The many “intangible bricks” of influence, love, understanding and concern that have helped build our school — she has piled these one upon another. The guidance of her discipline when one failed to do her best. . The trips she chaperoned with fun always going along. . The Christian character she portrays in her church and makes evident in all her life. What has she done? Can one doubt what we know? She gave herself. Does this not clearly show? What has she done? Amid this strenuous Life? Can one not see How she brings Joy to strife? What has she done? For those who from her seek? She gives herself. And thus her life does speak. Who 1s this one? Who now deserves our praise? It is “Miss Mac” And our tribute we raise. 19 20 Dr. J.M. Boswell President’s Message I want to commend the members of the 1960 annual staff for the work they have done in assembling and editing the material for the 1960 Lamp. As we enter the third year of our four-year program and contemplate the graduation of our first four-year class in 1961, we find that much has been accomplished in the past year and that there is much to be done. As the college faces the challenge of meeting the requirements of a four-year program, we have found our students enthusiastic about the program and have found them to be loyal, helpful, and cooperative in this as in other things. Moving into the four-year program not only demands additional responsibility on the part of administrative and staff members, but also demands increased responsibility and maturity in thought and action on the part of the members of the student body. The college has enjoyed the reputation of doing excellent work with its students on the junior college level and anticipates turning out four-year graduates who will do honor to their chosen professions and who will assume responsibility in community leadership in whatever places they may reside. The yearbook is one of the landmarks designating our achievements and progress. The administrative staff and the academic staff of the college are most appreciative of the contribution made by the annual staff to the college program. Dean of the College E.E. In the KJCC the Indians showed a marked improvement over last year and battled their way to a second place tie boasting an 8-6 conference record. The Indians engaged in three tournaments this season and won glory for Cumberland in each. In the Kiwanis Tournament at London, Kentucky, the Indians upset nationally ranked Lindsey Wilson and finished in the runner-up spot. At Greer, South Carolina, in the North Greenville Invitational the Indians w alked away with the consolation prize. The Indians ended the season by placing third in the KJCC Tourna- ment, good for their battle prize of the year. This has truly been an eventful year for the Indians. Center Bill Carlyle and forward Benny Collier were selected as first choices for the All-Conference team. Carlyle, who this year set a new Cumberland College scoring record, was chosen as first choice to KJCC All-Tourna- ment team. Cumberland College is proud of her Braves. ii Head coach Bill Ross came to Cumberland College six years ago as a graduate of West Virginia Tech. and Mar- shall College. Before coming to Cumberland, Ross taught in the public schools of West Virginia. During his years at Cumberland, Ross has produced teams which demanded the full support of the student body. In the season of ’59-’60 the Indians under Ross’ leader- ship won three trophies plus many victories over their oppo- nents. We now take time out to give our thanks to Coach for the contributions he has made to Cumberland College. FROM THE BENCH BILL ROSS It is difficult in a few words to express my feelings con- cerning the 1959-1960 Cumberland Indians. When the school year started in the fall of 1959, I received phone calls from a number of boys who had signed to play at Cumberland. These boys expressed their regrets and said that since they had better offers elsewhere they were forced to accept them. This left us with what seemed to be an unsurmountable task in a rough conference. However, at that time I did not realize that the boys who did come had the fighting heart it takes to battle back. The hold-overs (Maupin, Collier, and Carlyle) came to play, the Frosh did not know what it meant to quit. Other teams held the edge in experience, but no one could outfight this group of boys. Due to the lack of adequate subs in certain positions our team was some- times a bit weary, but all-in-all I feel they did an outstanding job. The future of these boys will be bright, because they have followed the motto of: “Aim at the stars,” and even if you don’t reach them, you will still land very high. 140 Schedule Cumberland . Bobby, “Pup” Morris, gave the Indian team the final touch as their manager. “Pup,” a graduate of Bethel Junior College, is now a Junior at Cumberland. Basketball is nothing new to him since he played during high school and with Bethel for two years. Physical Education 1s “Pup’s” major and this experience as manager will help him achieve his goal of being a coach. Now the season is over, and we take time out to salute “Pup” for the fine job he did of managing the Indians.
