A close, 17-14 victory at Iowa Wesleyan turned things around for Coach Jerry Maulin's men. Back to back shutouts, 63-0 against Mid-American Nazarene and 27-0 against Tarkio, proved to be the turning point of the season. The Wildcats finished the season by capturing two victories at home against St. Ambrose and Evangel. Hank Collins and Jeff Wellman led the rushing attack for the Wildcats gaining 773 and 727 yards respectfully. Dave Brown was converted to quarterback from his accustomed running back position and did an adequate job. Brown threw for nine touch downs amassing 929 yards through the air. He also ran for three touchdowns and gained 220 yards on the ground. Bill Zelle was named to the NAIA All-American team for his outstanding season at defensive tackle. He also received first team honors on the All-district team. Zelle led the team in quarterback sacks with ten, and was also fourth in tackles with 70 unassisted tackles and 23 assists for a total of 93 tackles. Also grabbing first team All-district honors were place kicker Steve O'Quinn, punter George Ott, and defensive back Bob Busch. Busch was among the leaders in pass interceptions in the NAIA with eight. Linebacker Denny Fanger and halfback Hank Collins were named to the second team. Fanger finished the season with 107 tackles and second place on the squad. All-district Honorable Mentions were received by Terry Ahern, Dave Brown, Ray Jezewak, Don Yuriatis, Andy Kiel, and Dan Hurst. A lack of size and depth made the season look doubtful but, after finishing the first half of the season with a 3-8 record, the Wildcats fought back during the second half, lifting the overall record to 11-14. They finished winning five of the remaining six games, although dropping the final game to Quincy college at home, 90-58. One of the usual bright spots for the Wildcat cagers was john Ernst's 19-point scoring average, which led the team. Ernst's highest scoring game came against St. Ambrose when he led the Wildcats to a 98-74 victory, contributing 36 points. The junior forward also led the Wildcats in free throw accuracy, compiling a 79fVo average from the free throw line. Ernst also climbed another giant step towards becoming the Culver-Stockton all-time leading scorer, needing only 411 points in his final year to surpass the mark set over 20 years ago. Mike Oelze led the team in rebounding, collecting 182 for the season. He became high rebounder for the team 12 out of 25 games. Perhaps the biggest surprise came from the play of junior Brian Malcolm and freshman Eric Goewey and David Wiesemann. Malcolm finished the season third in scoring with a 10.4 average and finished fourth in rebounding. Goewey began the season by scoring 14 points in the Wildcatls opener at Graceland College. Injuries and illness hampered him the remainder of the season, however, allowing him to compete in only 11 of 25 games. Wiesemann played in all 25 games, though, and collected 20 points in a victory over Columbia College. Dave Gaither and Steve Hill, seniors on the squad, provided the much needed leadership throughout the season. Gaither finish ed the season fourth in scoring, with a 9.1 average, and second in rebounding. Hill, had a 7.3 scoring average, but accounted for 84 assists, leading the team in that category. l v WILDCATS: fkneeling l-rj David Gaither Eric Goewey Jody Shoop Mike Oelze john Ernst. lstandingj Tim Rounce David Wiesemann Mike Smith Brian Malcolm Steve Muehlenfeld, Steve Hill, and manager Jeff Dodson The team was coached by Coach Gene Hall. 5 Y I7- Q Q. is ' 1 i E20 i 'z L ' 'L .ibn Scoreboard L 60-64 QGraceland College W 85-81 Avila College L 64-81 Lincoln University L 64-84 Evangel College L 81-85 QPark College W 85-71 QColumbia College W 79-66 St. Ambrose College L 68-74 QQuincy College L 68-71 Univ. of Wisc.-Platteville L 77-88 Qllockhurst College L 67-91 QEvangel College W 74-72 Qlowa Wesleyan College W 84-82 QMarycrest College L 63-67 Westminster College L 78-79 QPark College L 81-93 QAvila College W 92-90 QAustin Peay University L 69-77 QDavid Lipscomb L 78-92 QLoras College W 98-74 GSL Ambrose College W 90-83 QWestminster College W 70-64 Iowa Wesleyan College W 82-67 Missouri Valley College W 81-73 Marycrest College L 58-90 Quincy College 5 9 OPPOSITE . junio r Mike Smith fakes out Iowa , Wesleyan player.
