With all the Culver-Stockton students of the past ninety-eight years, the yearbook staff of 1951 is under its spell. In the vein of those who think of a nation as a ship of state, the staff is thinking of Culver- Stockton College in terms oi a river boat journeyinq triumphantly up and down this mighty stream through every kind of weather and fortune. It is with the hope that the reader's imagination will thus accompany them that the staff presents: L t +1- WM Goode Shippe f fx ,, Rx in f'3 fy, I 4f!i421N. McDonald 'L V st. It was a grievous day for Culver-Stockton when broken health made necessary the resignation of President Walker Harrison McDonald. His words were evidence that he would no longer officially be President. In the hearts and memories of the students and faculty he will always be Prexy -loved and respected for his many years of service on the Hill. A man sincerely interested in youth and an un- tiring worker, he is a truly magnetic personality in the history of Culver-Stockton College. As the head of the administration, his skillful guidance added numerous noteworthy accomplishments to the progressive college. May his future years be filled with many pleasant recollections of his affiliation here with us. President L. E. Ziegler as Q AMM.. First as the acting president, and then filling the vacancy left by Dr. W. H. McDonald, Leslie E. Zieg- ler stepped in to meet the crisis of the hour at Culver- Stockton College. His few months of service with us have already revealed his capable leadership, his willing cooperation, and his energetic response to a new challenge. He continues the purpose of the founders of the college to provide an education in liberal arts in an atmosphere of Christian democ- racy. As we prepare to begin a second century of Culver-Stockton's progress, we extend to our new president our most sincere wishes for many happy and meaningful years with the students of Culver- Stockton College. 13 Ioe C. Gwendolyn Boedy Hannibal Alpha Xi Delta lfmiom On Honors Day, 1949. a no-longer-green group, we moved up to the Sophomore section, leaving behind us not only an empty section to be filled by the freshmen of '49 fall, but also a year full of such class memories as our Homecoming Float and our Club '52 dance. A year passed and again on Honors Day we advanced. We had perfonned the primary function of the Sophomore Class-spon- soring beanies and the Weeks of Button . Honors Day, 1951, will see us change our places to occupy those previously filled by seniors. The Junior-Senior Prom is the memory we leave behind this year. With the Seniors as our honored guests, we danced to soft music under the subdued lights of the Moose Club in Quincy. Honors Day, 1952-well, that's a memory in the making. Contrary to popular opinion. all freshmen are not covered with green fuzz, or any other identifying marks, and the beanies are a mark of identification. Most of the freshmen 'have been very cooperative about wearing their beanies and buttoning. Kangaroo court was only too glad to hear the cases of violators. The stolid. stupendous sophomore class has decreed that beanies are to be worn at all times with the exception of dinner and church. Linda Elder, Secretary Oak Park, Ill. Alpha Xi Q swgg5-:gsm+s.'- L Lying in QYEWM N .Q ss QSSMW S..- Iames Potts. President Centralia Mu Theta Nu There are a lew individualists in every group. and that is an obvious characteristics among the fellows. Some of them wear their beanies roosting on either the right or left eyebrow and others wear their beanies roosting on their shirt collars. The most unique beanie of all can be seen on what is probably the salient point of the fresh- man class. It is the only open crown beanie on the campus, but the charred edges hint that some minor tragedy has befallen this particular beanie. When Thanksgiving rolls around. the freshmen can hang their beanies on a bedpost and remem- ber what fun it was. There is still a somber. solemn. sagacious group of sophomores who pass judgment on freshmen violators. 'Thursday, No- vember 2, 1950, Kangroo Court was in session, the honorable Sara Bonde presiding. Attorney Gerald Meyers presented the case of the prosecu- tion remarkably well. None of the defendants were exonerated. The principle oi the Kangaroo judicial system differs slightly from the U. S. judicial system. Kangaroos believe that every- one is guilty and cannot be proven innocent. Friday morning, the sophomore class, ably as- sisted by several freshmen entertained the stu- dents. In the future, the freshmen will be given other opportunities to perform it they will re- frain from wearing their beanies. kP 5E 426 -gf Q ill v- l ..-E: ....... Basketball games in the gym furthered our spirit for Culver-Stockton. Spring is in the air as we look out around the hill and see the beautiful colors and hear the singing of birds. Flunk day will finally come with a happy day at the pits. We will say good-by to our friends and roommates and leave behind our school and campus. To C.-S. we say thank you for a wonderful first year of college as we pull up our anchor hoping that we may return for another happy voyage next September. jlf'QflAlWL8lfL Our sails are set as we of Culver-Stockton's class of '54 look back on the sea of memories of our first year of college life. We pulled into port that first day here at C.-S. with wide eyes gazing at our new campus and beautiful surroundings on the hill. The dorms, the Cat's Pause, and classes brought us new friends. Activities took up a great deal of time. Some of us made the football team. Others became class officers or joined the Megaphone staff. Button, Freshie became a familiar phrase as we sported our blue and white freshman hats until Thanksgiving. We attended football games and cheered for our Wildcats, or sang Here's to Culver-Stockton. Chapel and assembly programs came regu- larly to help widen our knowledge. .E R HB BY- miss w .J Hs mam. an , E 1. Q H mr H . BSI? ,s sg -- -.2 'P :ss s sweep. The Sadie Hawkins Day Dance was a huge success again this fall, while spring brought the more formal 66 .....,.Viola Giles and enchanting dinnerwdance. More memories: in honor of the retiring president and of the newly appointed executive, a tea was given by Beta Nu for the entire college: another picture was donated to the Helen Abemathey collection: the thrill of an Alpha Xi Delta Homecoming Queen. The Sweetheart dance eagerly awaited by all the Hill proved itself worthy of the avid ,an- ticipation. Again as in past years, the Lambda Chi Bridge Tournament was enthusiastically supported. Fall rushing brought to the fold seventeen new pledges. Climaxing the year's social functions was the spring formal which will long remain one of the happiest memories of the Hawks and their dates. Extra curricular activities occupy much of the time of Lambda Chi Alphas who serve on athletic teams, in music groups, as officers of classes and clubs, and as loyal members. Mu Theta Nu Fraternity was founded at Culver- Stockton in 1868 as the Matetropian Literary Society, and since then has been an ever-improving organ- ization of the College Campus. The Fraternity donates distinctive awards for in- dividual student achievements. Each year, the name of the Sophomore man who has the highest scho- lastic standing at the end of his first two years at C-S is engraved on the Libby Scholarship Cup. A second award is a gold cup on which is engraved each year the name of the person who has given .76 the best individual dramatic performances during the year. A third award, also a cup, is given to the senior scholarship winner, as designated by a faculty committee. Another contribution of The Maths is the College Victory Bell. This year the Maths had men on the Football, Bas- ketball, Track, Baseball, Boxing, and Golf teams, and held a high place in intramural sports. The Fraternity was well represented in Debate, Mega- phone, Yearbook, and other campus activities. Even with all the natural gripes directed at them, it's hard to say which one is the more loved and cheered for of the two. We'd guess the volume ol yelling is about equal for both. And speaking of yells, a hearty one is intended to the much- criticized, mostly made fun of, but hard-working bunch of cheer- leaders who work with gusto to remind us occasionally that we live and breathe. Beat Culverl! The short command, Beat Culver , has rung in many a rival team's ear from their fans and supporters. Whether the game was played on the turf. polished floor. dirt track, asphalt. or packed dirt of the diamond. the opposing team had but one idea in mind and that was to defeat Culver more than any other team. There is something about a team turned out by Culver-Stockton that makes it a tough one to beat. Ability is found on almost any ball club. but it is cooperation and teamwork that determines victories. Good coaches that mold these qualities are necessary and managers must be found who will efficiently supply the team with their needs. Add to this mixture an excellent backing by students. faculty. and administra- tion. and from the conglamorcation emerges a competent ball club with a good morale and the will to win. So it is with Culver-Stockton's teams. It is high on the list of teams to be beaten by its competitors. The brand ot ball played by the Wildcats is something of which the college can rightfully be proud. 3 001140K The final gun of the Dubuque game sounded the end of 1950 football at Culver-Stockton. a series of highs and lows. After being soundly drubbed by Kirksville in the opening game, the Blue and White recovered to the extent that they won the next two games and tied with favored Quincy College. Before a large home- coming crowd, conference champions, William Iewell, held them powerless for three quarters and yielded them only one touchdown in the fourth. Recovering quickly, the Wildcats went to Central and had them beaten until the final quarter when Central scored and eeked out a tie. Missouri Valley was held to a 27 to 7 victory. One point added Iowa Wesleyan to the win side and the injury- riddled Wildcats ran into an iron wall at Dubuque to be downed in the last game of the season. The Dubuque game was not only the season closer for the team, but for some it was the end of football at Culver. Seniors Herbert Dix, John Langley, Iohn McNulty, and Glen Bice then played their final game. Prospects for next year do not look bad at all. Warren Holbrook, halfback, chosen on the All-Star team of the MCAU, returns to Culver. Larry Adams, end, Al Henning, tackle, and Robert Dell, center, picked by the Associated Press for the second team, will also don their cleats again next year. The College is indebted to the team, Football Coach Owen, Line Coach Lerette, and Head Coach Her- ington for a thrill-packed season of good football. Chi Omega. After C-Sta's Scenes from South curtains closed again. and the girls' Pacific the chorus came out to sing I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair . with appropriate motions. Back onstage, Ruth Voirol was serenaded by the male chorus as Bloody Mary , a native woman bent on selling grass skirts to a group of G. I.'s whose slanguage was a little beyond her. Using the skirt and a little false makeup. Tom Hartigan did a native dance as the G. I.'s sang Honey Bun . He didn't seem to satisfy them, however, for There's Nothing Like a Dame. j Robert Carlson was a little luckier than the rest on this score. With his native girl friend, Pauline Wang, he soloed Younger Than Springtime. The entire ensemble combined for the last two numbers, Happy Talk and Bali H'ai. Part two of the C-Sta presentation was the spec- tacle Drums Of Bali , produced by David Stein- beck and presented through special arrangement with Variety, Inc. Set in primitive jungle surroundings, Dn1ms of Bali dealt with the magic of a White Queen and her fanatic followers. The show opened with a spectacular fire twirling dance by guest per- former Marilyn Cronin, the White Queen. As she ceased her dance her subjects brought in the vicious Leopard Lady, Betty Cecil. who had been captured by a hunting party. As she arose. the natives fell back, captivated by her lithe dance. Slowly, as the drum pulsations increased. she added to her power over them, until just as she attempted to attack the White Queen, the subjects came to and sprang on her, running her through with a spear. She writhed in agony as the curtain fell. Special lighting effects and drum tempos produced a weird and pulse-tugging performance. The dance itself began at eight, lasted until twelve, and was fumished with music by Calvin Shank's Swingmasters. Featured attraction of the band w drummer Walter Scott. a short man with long talent, who gave a solo exhibition. The court consisted of Ianet Bradshaw and Richard Houchens, Ioan LeStarge and Robert Weaver, Barbara Lowe and Robert Iones, and Mary Ann Bowman and David Tomaso. ne ag omecoming Fall 1950 brought once again the exciting and greatly anticipated week end of Homecoming. This is a time when studies and books are ignored: friendships renewed: alumni welcomed back: and everyone is plunged into a whirlwind of activities. The traditional parade started off events, followed by a football game, which in turn was preceeded by a water ballet entitled Autumn Frolic. Of course, the highest point of the week end was the dance held Saturday evening in the L. L. Culver Gymnasium. The Homecoming Queen's Coronation limelighted the first part of the evenings proceedings and memories of Rogers and Hammersteins South Pacific mingled with native Drums of Bali remain in conjunction with the jungle dance theme of the dance. The week end passed quickly and all too soon we were bidding farewell to old acquaintances. Pleasant memories remain which will never be forgotten. The suspense of the dancers approached a climax with the expectation of the coronation ceremony. As the soft strains of the sweetheart song were played, the lights dimmed and into the huge glittering heart-shaped throne stepped pert, Corlotta McLean. On each side of Corlotta stood her lovely attendants, Norma Conrad, Marian Fisher, Marilyn Lemon, and Marian Lillicrrd. Al Easley president of the fraternity, presented Miss McLean with the sweetheart trophy and placed about her neck a golden locket in honor of her selection as Sweetheart of Lambda Chi. 114 Spxcuzza, Brown, Stanwich, Mandish.
