From an environment we re- ceived an awesome challenge. With help we applied our very best ef- forts. We were caught up in the Culver way. A large part of learning consists of reacting to others, in sharing joy and sadness, in caring for each other, in finding the strength that lies in brotherhood. We needed to let somebody hear how much we missed home and family, and an adviser listened. We needed to talk to someone else who fought the battle of PSSC Physics, and someone was there. We needed a partner in giving vent to natural adolescent exuberance, and the stu- dent body responded. Whatever our needs, the security of friend- ships helped to fulfill them or to minimize them. 11

Independence: a by-product of this early departure from home. People dependent on each other for many things, yet capable of going it alone if necessary. Laughter: an integral part of every life; a necessity for survival in an often unfunny world. The final, most lasting result of friend- ship. Solitude: moments set aside for doing whatever feels right, or for doing nothing. As necessary as friendship, solitude fosters the growth of dreams and the realiza- tion that time is passing; precious.
