Culver 13 - Morgan Park 7 lost a close game to St. Bedes on their home- field, 7-0. St. Bedes took advantage of their speed in unleashing tricky lateral plays around end that garnered first downs. The next Saturday, Homecoming, the Flying Squadron fulfilled old grads' wishes in smothering St. John's, 40-6. It remained a contest until the second half, when the varsity let loose with an offensive attack that hit pay dirt for three touchdowns to put the game safely away. On the road again, Culver was com- pletely demobilized by a spirited Kentucky Military Institute performing before their own Homecoming crowd. K.M.I. struck with lightning ease as they bowled across five markers. Culverls lone thrill of the day came on a handoff to Moore, who scam- pered sixty yards down the sidelines for a T. D. that left the score 32-6. Culver found itself once again on home grounds as they prepared to take on Goshen H. S., lone spoiler of last year's once-blotted record. D. jaunt by CrazylegsH Moore to put us ahead, 7-6. Our defense didn't hold, and Goshen pushed across two more tallies to win, 18-7. This was the hardest game of the season to lose- the first defeat our homefield had suffered. Culver's Maroon and White gladiators ventured to LaPorte the following week in an attempt to even their record. Flylng Squadron Wlns Against Tradltlonal Rlvals Profiting from their mistakes in the first encounter, our fighting lads showed some of their dazzle when they met Niles on the home field the next week. Two touch- down-heaves by Halpert-a 24 yarder to Brian Erickson and a long one to Mike Me- haffy-proved enough to defeat an over- confident crowd of Niles players, 14-7. Culver continued its brilliant playing as it took on Morgan Park for the Brass Helmet the next Saturday. The game, one of the biggest in Culver football rivalries, was a thriller all the way. A tally by Mike Mehaffy on the Statue of Liberty and a sparkling 49 yard T. D. jaunt by Skip Laube gave our lads the margin they needed as they pulled the game out of the fire, 13-7 .
