Foreign Language Department You can't find a better language teach- ing staff than the one at Culver. Almost every instructor in the department is quali- fied to teach three or more languages. With Colonel Marshal as department chairman, these instructors have done a spectacular job of presenting their language or lan- guages. Even those cadets who claim that English is enough language for anyone soon discover themselves beginning to grasp parts of Himmel, Meine Schuhe! UL'- Homme qui dormit cent ans, or Zalacain. Some cadets even find themselves reading parts of Cicero. Not only are the courses designed to give a cadet the best possible understanding of the language, but they also are aimed at giving students a good idea of the customs and feelings of foreign people. After a summer s vacation M lor Patch s Spanish students ex perience some difficulty in tak ing up where they left off. 20 Swimming coach and athletic director Walaitis doubles in the brass of the rolling German language. The immense difficulty :mf German there are few who will deny, but Wally made it at least as easy as diving from the high board.

CuIver's Science Department Cn? of the lessons which, at the outset in the fall, a student of Biology must learn is to use the microscope properly. Under Captain Mira:le's direction, Barrett and Bard acquire this basic skill. Near the center of campus life. an Mini! A cJ.if.cuLt but fascinating course, Physics captured from the first the imagination of First Classmen. Here a group watches Major Benner as, early in the course, he demonstrates some of the fundamental properties of matter. Although none of the members of the Science Department were able to discover a means of perpetual motion, they were able to do the seemingly unbelievable before our eyes. Doctor Johnson's and his assistants' calmness was a blessingg for it wasn't a rarity that a young scientist began to rage over an experiment. Few of the occupants of Main Barracks will ever forget the ter- rific odor Which arose when we began hav- ing experiments involving sulfur. Neither will the first classmen ever forget how Col- onel Strait was able to hit a small falling tin can with a ball from a blowgun. Even though some of us thought our assignments in Physics were a little on the heavy side, by the end of the year, we all had a thorough knowledge of elementary Physicsg and Sci- entific Methodn echoed in our ears. The gen- eral procedure a cadet follows in his Science course is to take Biology either his third or fourth class year, Chemistry his second class year, and Physics his last year. All have contributed excitingly to our knowledge of the world. I9
