As the twenty-fifth annual published by a gradu- ating class, this volume marks a significant phase in the history of yearbooks at Culver. It has been the desire and purpose of the staff to make the 1929 Roll Call parallel in distinctiveness, quality, and improvement the changes which have taken place in the academy. These changes so distinguish the 1928-29 school year as having reached a height heretofore unattained that the record of this year, as compared to that of other years, must be an accented departure. By so having in mind the essential parts of a Culver yearbook, we have been guided in the construction of the most symmetrical, most artistic, most complete, most authentic, and most Culver-like Roll Call which we are capable of producing. In attempting to present a Culver-like Roll Call, we have tried to exemplify in its pages the truths expressed by S. E. Kiser in his eight poetic lines which constitute The Spirit of Culver. From the line '4The hope to win, the zeal to dare, we have obtained the desire to present something vivid, enlivening, and different from what has preceded us in Culver annual volumes, and we have most energetically dared innovai , 7--- R. J. FOWLER A. H. EMERSON J. A. MARTINDALE Assistant Business ltlanager Assistant Business Manager Staff Photographer tions. 4'Contempt for what is base and mean has led us in an effort to abolish all pettiness, selfishness, and triviality which sometimes creep into the pages of an amateur production. We have endeavored to select pictures and facts which will stimulate memories of 6'Pride in achievement that is fair, and highrregard for what is clean. The thought carried in the line Wfhe strength that is in brotherhood is portrayed in our volume through the treatment by groups, it is not the purpose to make any in- dividual or any organization stand out in an unproportional degree, but to represent the existing bond of brotherhood by the group presentation. The courage that pro- claims successi' is a basic point in the Culver code, inasmuch as endeavor, of which Culver life principally consists, is chiefly composed of courageous striving, concen- tration, and competition in the quest of success. What is sometimes lacking in the rush for success is uThe will to strive for what is good, and what we proffer is a volume of truth, a record containing no malice, no intentional misrepresentation or omission. And, first and always, manlinessi' is symbolized by our endeavor to pre- sent in a symmetrical book, full, complete, well-rounded-in just the light we see manliness-the strength and beauty of Culver.
