An Original Musical Comedy by Norman Panama and Melvin Frank Based on Characters Created by Al Lapp Lyncs and Music by Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul If Li l Abner has his way he druther do without Sadie Hawkins Day. However the govemment s pro- posal is not quite what he or any other Dogpatch bachelor has in mind. At the emergency Compone meeting named for the Confederate General Jubilation T. Compone the citizens leam that Dogpatch has the dubious honor of being considered the most unnecessary spot in America. Consequently it has been chosen for the relocation of America s atomic bomb tests. When Mammy as part of Dogpatch s frantic effort to redeem itself gives the scrawny govemment man a-swig of Yokumberry tonic made from the Yokumberry bush he sprouts into a one hundred per cent red-blooded perfect American specimen like Abner who takes the tonic daily. Dogpatch is spared until the tonic can be evaluated but Washington s other major power General Bullmoose is plotting with Dogpatch s notorious Evil Eye Fleagle to steal the formula. On the day of the race Fleagle s whammy allows Bullmnose's sultry secretary Appassionata Von Climax to catch Abner, Now according to the Code of the Hills Abner s bachelor hours are numbered. Too late he declares his love for Daisy Mae. Bullmoose s plot includes stealing the formula with a truth whammy and then destroying Abner with a suicidal sports car whammy. The truth whammy requires alcohol so Bullmoose plansa situation which will force teetotalling Abner to take a drink: a toast to his bride-to-be. 'However Mammy s premonition powers sense Abner s grave peril. Daisy Mae in desperation, promises to marry repulsive Earthquake McGoon if he will help rescue Abner. The Dogpatchers crash Bullmoose s Washington party. Just as the toast is proposed Earthquake deflects Fleagle s whammy from Abner to Bullmoose with a tray. Helplessly Bullmoose confesses everything to the police. Meanwhile the tonic is rejected because it destroys a man s romanticizin motivations. Miraculously Pappy Yukum discovers a secret Compone antidote Qpure Crick waterl and successfully revitalizes Abner and those Dogpatchers who volimteered to test the tonic. Earthquake claims Daisy Mae but her omery Scragg relatives plan to-move in with them inspiring him to abdicate in favor of Yokumberry-tonic-fortified Abner. Mean- while the bomber is approaching. In the hectic evacuation of Compone s statue a plaque signed by single-handedly lost the Civil War and thus saved the Union. Because national shrines are sacrosanct Dogpatch is now retumed to the Dogpatchers. Once again through no fault of his own old Compone has saved the day. The wonderful tunes include Abner and Daisy s gentle duet Namely You a dream ballad If I Had My Druthers the hilarious show-stopper Jubilation T. Compone General Bullmoose s Progress ls the Root of All Evil and the political satire The Country s in the Very Best of Hands. The Sadie Hawkins Day Ballet and fine choral work contribute to making LI L ABNER one of the classics of American musicals. , . , Y 1 , Y 7 li ll ' , , allowing the Sadie HawkinslDay Race to be rescheduled. Abner donates the tonic to the govemment, Abraliam Lincoln is discovered, declaring the monument a national shrine in honor of Compone, who , , , 'x.
