Taking field trips in the woods and fields surrounding the school earth science students made observations of the plants and animals that inhabit these areas. Four more sections of biology accommodated the ever increasing number of students. Biology students divided their class time between CLASSROOM STUDY AND LAB WORK dealing with dissections and observations of various animal forms. Chemist ry classes studied a more extensive unit on bio-chemistry, which included lab work on enzymes. Class discussions about heat, sound, radiation, light, electricity, atomic structure, and magnetism intrigued the physics students. Taking time at the end of the period, earth science students complete their notes on the day ' s lesson. Lab assistant Karen Bangs distributes the specimens to biology students. Concentrating on her work, Charmaine Dill tries to complete the last step of her experiment. 29

Programmed learning material and individual progress charts aided the teachers of Math 9 and Math 10 this year. A new subject, Math 10 was designed for students wishing only to complete the required courses for graduation. STUDENT AIDS OFFERED A RELIEF FOR TEACHERS in the explanation of the various mathematical processes. Advanced math students began the year with the study of probability and chance and then progressed to calculus. Trig students used calculators to solve involved problems, while the use of audio-visual aids helped algebra and geometry students in their understanding. A math 10 student, Roger Huffman, works his problem on the blackboard. Geometry students attempt to prove the Pythagorean theorem. Eddie Eddins explains a concept of physics to Dr. Rogers. 28

United States history students read plays on black America and discussed prejudices. Since this was election year, most pupils were required to do scrapbooks on either the local or national elections. Several classes were also involved in rewriting the Constitution and participating in a mock Senate, while others viewed student-written plays on television. A FIELD TRIP TO WILLIAMSBURG IN DECEMBER was the highlight for many of Mrs. Mills ' and Mrs. Oliver ' s students. World History students participated in debates and panel discussions in addition to their six weeks ' projects. Students taking advantage of psychology as a new addition to the curriculum engaged in human relations gafnes and value discovery exercises and projects. Shelly Loving takes a break from the rigorous pace of world history class. Cam paining in the mock Presidential election, Mike Ballato draws support from his classmates. U.S. history students become engrossed in the music of the folk singers from the Virginia Museum. Discussing the problems the world faces, the new psychology students express their views. 30
