Under the supervision of new teachers, French, Spanish, and Latin students participated in skits, dialogues, and presentations of situations. Increased interest in these languages prompted the ADDITION OF FRENCH IV AND SPANISH IV. These courses enabled many students to meet necessary language requirements for college. “This must stop now! Steve Coldsborough scolds Lisa Kelly and Mark Walker in a Spanish skit. Listening to tapes the French students initate the accent of a French linguist. Latin II students translate the life and conquests of Julius Caesar from their textbooks. 27

Academic English students enjoyed writing short stories and reading such classics as A Separate Peace, Macbeth, Kidnapped, and Frankenstein. Advanced seniors delved into Creek, Shakespearian, and modern dramas, science fiction, and various novels. Business and general students used new soft-bound text books and viewed weekly television. Many STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE ORAL FORENSICS contest held in the fall as each academic student was required to enter an oral or written contest. Chewing his pen, Leroy Hackley contemplates one of Mrs. Hill’s questions. Juniors in Mrs. Yancey ' s English class try to understand the difference between participles, gerunds, and infinitives. Seniors plot to get revenge on Mr. Martin after receiving their test grades on Lord of the Flies. 26

Programmed learning material and individual progress charts aided the teachers of Math 9 and Math 10 this year. A new subject, Math 10 was designed for students wishing only to complete the required courses for graduation. STUDENT AIDS OFFERED A RELIEF FOR TEACHERS in the explanation of the various mathematical processes. Advanced math students began the year with the study of probability and chance and then progressed to calculus. Trig students used calculators to solve involved problems, while the use of audio-visual aids helped algebra and geometry students in their understanding. A math 10 student, Roger Huffman, works his problem on the blackboard. Geometry students attempt to prove the Pythagorean theorem. Eddie Eddins explains a concept of physics to Dr. Rogers. 28
