And the world breaks in on the relative isolation of school life: crime in the streets, war in Vietnam, civil disobedience in the news, youthful protests everywhere. Realization comes that in a frighteningly short time we must cope, make decisions, choose sides, give a hand. It 1s the hand that throws the bomb or quietens the frightened; that marks the ballot and signs the treaty; that holds the gun or stretches out in friendship. The hand, my friend, has a good deal of significance in life. Poets and philosophers and preachers have recognized the wmportance of the hand. “Tools were made, and born were hands, Every farmer understands.” Blake “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” Wallace “.. the warmth, the lwing warmth of human hands.” “Blessed are the horny hands of toul.” Lowell “An open hand, an easy shoe, And hope to make the day go through.” Carmon “The gods hear men’s hands before their lips.” Swinburne “The tron hands of Fate” Kipling Take this hand, for example: NERS SG HOP oo Gesticulating Denying guilt Being a part in the play of the action gee e Settling an Explaining things Reaching goals argument Hands are also useful for .. . Cramming lockers Holding books ... ... and other hands 7 For her helping hand, This book 1s gratefully dedicated to Mrs. Marie Searcy ADMINISTRATION Whether he 1s writing the very precise J.E.M. This year the Student Council has undertaken several projects - some old and some new. It began the year with its only money-making project, the Street Dance, held Friday, September 13. The profit was over $300. After the money-making project, it began several money-spend- ing projects, the first of which was the financing of the trip to Jacksonville for the 42nd Annual NCSCC meeting. The delegation was made up of Jack Pressley, Bill Fowler, and Mr, Flake, Soon afterwards, the Council began to plan for a different type of White Christmas, Instead of taking just a few families, the school gave each student at the Canada school a stocking and a gift presented by Santa Claus (Mr. Dunlop). Students from Camp sang carols. There was no time for rest, since Homecoming was only a month away. Cullowhee won the game, and the dance was great, After the introduction of Miss Rebel and her court, one of the best bands in the Carolinas, the Mandarin Caste, played for the dance, Everyone agreed that it was the best Homecoming in years. Other Student Council projects are the Teachers’ Tea, the financing of the remaining socials, the Western District NCSCC meeting in Enka, and finally the election of next year's officers. In electing students to the National Honor Society, the secondary school faculty honors their attainments already made and recognizes the promise they contain of continued excellence in the cherished ideals of a school. The object of all chapters is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of second- ary schools of the nation. The National Honor Society aided the Student Council and FHA with a White Christmas Project for the Canada School. In March, the Society sponsored a Careers Day for Seniors in Jackson County so they might become acquainted with vocational fields in Western North Carolina. The Society also published a digest of summer jobs for the students of Camp La- boratory School to help the students find a suitable summer job mote easily. | Ee aa} tH President - DOTTIE BROWN oD ERE Vice President = CINDY BARRETT Secretary - PEGGY BIRD Hareasmire rs KATHY QUEEN The hands of a woman. . ulfill the Sharon Parker, Joanne Queen, Pam Broom, Rita Queen, Stanna Procter, Jane Clayton, Cindy Barrett, Loretta Cline, Gay Rogers, Debbie Andrews, Janice Hooper, Sandra Hooper, Linda Stewart, Marcia Bryson, Elsie Taylor, Sandra Smitk, Joan Little, Venelle Owen, Frances Mitchell, Jill Ulsenheimer, Elaine Wilson, Dottie Brown, Phyllis Sizemore, Carolyn Bryson, Debbie Stallings, Ruth Dills, Kathy Coggins, Patsy Lovedahl, Linda Ashe, Linda Farley, Linda Norton, Mary Bumgarner, Marilyn Matus, Sue Moore, Mrs. Hodges, Norma Bryson, Adair Miller, Myrna McElroy, Diane Bryant, Anna Bryson, Evelyn Kilby, Marcia Bird, Jewell Wall, Gina Wittekind, Peggy Bird, Judy Ammons, Judy Hopkins, Donna Clark, Joyce Bishop, Mary Martha Bennett, Susan Ulsenheimer. We co-sponsored the annual Street Dance and the White Christ- mas, We took fruit baskets to the County Home and sent several good-will baskets to boys from our school who are in Vietnam. In March we observed FHA week, during which we sponsored a Fashion Show, entertained FHA mothers, and had a tea for the faculty. At Easter we made favors for the local hospital.
