14 What's in a Name? On Sunday, May 16, 1965, our new mil- lion dollar school building was dedicated. It was named in honor of one of the school's most beloved former teachers, Miss Cordelia Camp. During her twenty-three years here at Cullowhee, she taught and counseled hun- dreds upon hundreds of students, many of whom are prominent citizens of the state to- day. Miss Camp has spent more than fifty years of her life as a teacher, and we, the students of Cullowhee High School, are proud that our school is named for such a re- markable and wonderful woman. The Seniors Dedicate This Annual to... . Mrs, Nelle Bond Conrad, who has dedicated her life contributing to educa- tion, whose classes have become a fond tradition to her students, and whose lead- ership has guided many students to higher achievement, Mrs, Conrad has been on our school’s faculty for 26 years; this is her last. Dur- ing the time that she has taught history and foreign languages, she has made our nation’s past come alive for us, and she has not only taught us foreign vocabularies but has taught us appreciation of foreign cultures as well. Ithas become traditional to grumble about the verb conjugations and book reports, but all the time we have known that we have enjoyed it. In the years after graduation, much will be for- gotten, but the experience of learning the genders, nouns, and verbs of French, study- ing about the Civil War, and taking mul- tiple-choice tests will linger on. When Mrs, Conrad first came to Cul- lowhee, the school had just moved to the new McKee Building, and last year she saw it moved again, this time to Camp. If anyone has a grasp of the evolution of the school as we know it today, she is the one. She has stayed to serve a second generation of Cullowhee High School stu- dents, How does one go about measuring contributions? No one really knows, but if they are measured in terms of service to oth- ers, Mrs. Conrad would rank high. For many years she has co- sponsored the Student Council, whose progress through the years can be largely attributed to her. She has given the members a sense of fair play and taught them to put citizenship to work in their everyday lives, knowing that present learning will make for good future citizens. She has also sponsored the French Club and the Junior Class, giving unstintingly of her time to each. Mrs, Conrad is a symbol of the organizations, classes, and activities which make up the picture of our high school years. She characterizes the unique and elusive qualities which dis- tinguish Cullowhee High School, and her students are proud to dedicate not only the annual but the memories of their high school years, to her, Mrs. Nelle Bond Conrad. 13
