The best way in which to do this would be to put the school itself between the covers of our annual: the building (just beginning to feel familiar to us), the students, the teachers, he food in the lunchroom, the noise in the halls, the smoking comer, the buses, the smokestack, the books - and a Howand other compo- nents from pencils to paper clips that go to make Cullowhee High. But this is impossible. At best we can only hope to give sketches of school life. A sketch, in a literary sense, is a composition that is intentionally slight in treatment, discursive in style, and familiar in tone. We have tried within

these pages to give the Cullowhee story in this way: slight, of necessity, but told as we might give an account of it to our children, just as we recall it. We wanted it to be informal, for that is characteristic of our whole school atmosphere. A sketch is also a representation of an object or scene as records its chief features. The object is the school; the scene is the classroom. The hundreds of pictures included here are an effort to record in pictorial form the chief features of this institution in the year 1966.
