Cullowhee High... . SKETCHES JANICE MONTEITH CRAWF HONEYCUTT Editors JONNIE LOWE Business Manager The Senior Class Cullowhee High School Cullowhee, North Carol 13 presents the... . cr oe ne Sapiens ILA LTE AS : e Sketch: A representation of an object or scene as records its chief features. Sketch: A short literary composition intentionally slight in treatment, discursive in style, and familiar in tone. L4 BRARY CRRD ew fe oe oe The purpose of the Rebel is to portray accurately student life. The best way in which to do this would be to put the school itself between the covers of our annual: the building (just beginning to feel familiar to us), the students, the teachers, he food in the lunchroom, the noise in the halls, the smoking comer, the buses, the smokestack, the books - and a Howand other compo- nents from pencils to paper clips that go to make Cullowhee High. But this is impossible. At best we can only hope to give sketches of school life. A sketch, in a literary sense, is a composition that is intentionally slight in treatment, discursive in style, and familiar in tone. We have tried within these pages to give the Cullowhee story in this way: slight, of necessity, but told as we might give an account of it to our children, just as we recall it. We wanted it to be informal, for that is characteristic of our whole school atmosphere. A sketch is also a representation of an object or scene as records its chief features. The object is the school; the scene is the classroom. The hundreds of pictures included here are an effort to record in pictorial form the chief features of this institution in the year 1966. They are organized under the five main sections following... . ‘ ON 10 ay , — oO eS Be 2 ee ent RI Sate ae ao a oo eee oe 4 ‘i PRO cone See nent Soa ; SO NOP ome The Seniors Dedicate This Annual to... . Mrs, Nelle Bond Conrad, who has dedicated her life contributing to educa- tion, whose classes have become a fond tradition to her students, and whose lead- ership has guided many students to higher achievement, Mrs, Conrad has been on our school’s faculty for 26 years; this is her last. Dur- ing the time that she has taught history and foreign languages, she has made our nation’s past come alive for us, and she has not only taught us foreign vocabularies but has taught us appreciation of foreign cultures as well. Ithas become traditional to grumble about the verb conjugations and book reports, but all the time we have known that we have enjoyed it. In the years after graduation, much will be for- gotten, but the experience of learning the genders, nouns, and verbs of French, study- ing about the Civil War, and taking mul- tiple-choice tests will linger on. When Mrs, Conrad first came to Cul- lowhee, the school had just moved to the new McKee Building, and last year she saw it moved again, this time to Camp. If anyone has a grasp of the evolution of the school as we know it today, she is the one. She has stayed to serve a second generation of Cullowhee High School stu- dents, How does one go about measuring contributions? No one really knows, but if they are measured in terms of service to oth- ers, Mrs. Conrad would rank high. For many years she has co- sponsored the Student Council, whose progress through the years can be largely attributed to her. She has given the members a sense of fair play and taught them to put citizenship to work in their everyday lives, knowing that present learning will make for good future citizens. She has also sponsored the French Club and the Junior Class, giving unstintingly of her time to each. Mrs, Conrad is a symbol of the organizations, classes, and activities which make up the picture of our high school years. She characterizes the unique and elusive qualities which dis- tinguish Cullowhee High School, and her students are proud to dedicate not only the annual but the memories of their high school years, to her, Mrs. Nelle Bond Conrad. 13 14 What's in a Name? On Sunday, May 16, 1965, our new mil- lion dollar school building was dedicated. It was named in honor of one of the school's most beloved former teachers, Miss Cordelia Camp. During her twenty-three years here at Cullowhee, she taught and counseled hun- dreds upon hundreds of students, many of whom are prominent citizens of the state to- day. Miss Camp has spent more than fifty years of her life as a teacher, and we, the students of Cullowhee High School, are proud that our school is named for such a re- markable and wonderful woman. Although the article told the basic facts leading to the visitation of the 23-member team from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that came to evaluate our school, it did not tell of the long months of prepara- tion that came before the visit of the committee in April of 1965. It did not tell of the long hours the high school teachers and staff members spent each night compiling the 22 volumes of in- formation, ranging from 24 to 175 pages. Nor did it speak of the time that the elementary teachers spent in compiling their 159-page volume. It took months of work by the whole school staff to produce these unimpres- sive looking booklets. The students now in school and those who will follow owe special appreciation to the teachers and staff members who helped our school reach the standard of excellence that made it possible for us to become reaccredited. Mr. Monteith and Mr. Stallings proudly look at the finished report of the school's self-study.
