TITLE PAGE 1 Peak Moments Sometimes we don’t pay attention to all the life and lively moments but these are the ones that will live in our memories later. The were great moments in ’88. We’ll remember more of those ‘peaks’ than all else that happened. These are the moments that made us feel even more ‘alive’. With spirit week kicking off the year on an ‘up beat’ note, the school had a fresh lively start. The halls woke up. Throughout the year our pulses quicked at ‘peak times.’ In competition, before tests and presentations, at special events and announcements we all felt a rush. 1. Numero Uno says it all. 2. We Live For A Moment Of Originality It happens every year, at every school, to everyone. New clothes, new hairdos, and sometimes even new attitudes, some good and some bad, fill the halls during the first week of school. This year was no different than any other. The first impression is, of course, the most important. Sophomores try to fit in. Juniors try to look better than the sophomores but not too cool for the seniors, and seniors try to top both the sophomores and juniors. Take a look at this year’s “beginning.” p. 16 1. CLUBS DIVISION 17 CHS Speaks Out Forensics Forensics is a club for those who enjoy giving speeches, researching, information, writing poetry or acting. With all the different categories, everyone can find something they enjoy. There is solo-acting, group interp., play-acting, ferrago, prose, four-minute, storytelling, original oratory, public address, special occasion speech, demonstration speech, and poetry reading. The group as a whole goes to various sub-district, district, and state competitions. Sometimes we even get out of school early for them. Finally, at the end there is a Conference Championship Tournament for those that qualify. If you like to compete, meet new people, and have a lot of fun, maybe forensics is for you. Stage crew works long and hard hours sawing, hammering, and painting for the sets of our annual musical and play which I might add they did an excellent job, as always, building the sets for “Hello Dolly”. They also set up for band bizzare every year. And how many of you knew that without stage crew our ceiling for prom would not be decorated? I personally want to thank Mr. Haske for his brilliant idea for the 1987 prom in which he created an outdoor starlight look. The class of 1988 thanks you for the memories. A V or Audio Visual is a service function for teachers. It involves the distribution of televisions, video cassette recorders, and tape recorder equipment for classroom use. The audio visual aids are Craig Stringfellow and Brian Olen who give up their time to provide service to this function. AV STAGE 19 Pacer Quantity Not Quality Camera Club Smile! “Hey, is everyone here? We can't get anything done unless all of the staffers are here! There are just so many people on Pacer this year that it is hard to get all of us in the same room at the same time!” Actually, the pacer staff consisted of just two members throughout most of the 1987-88 school year. Senior editor Chuck Watson and sophomore columnist Chris Mattson were the main underlying force behind the scenes of the Cudahy Senior High School’s newspaper. Though there were only two, a third and very important “helper” was the Apple Macintosh which arrived in September. The entire newspaper, except for the printing process, was typed and laid-out on the screen of the computer. Journalism class and free-lance writers also contributed dearly to that wonderful publication that periodically enlightcd so many of our homerooms. Would you like to learn how to operate a camera? print pictures? How about receiving free film, processing, and supplies? Then join the Camera Club. This was a part of the announcement that attracted so many people into joining the club. Printing, developing, and free film was just one part of this years Camera Club, under the direction of Mr. Hitt. This year there were some very active members, who worked not only for themselves, but worked for the yearbook. There was a large turnout for the first few meetings, then fewer and fewer people wanted to do work and they decided to leave the club. Oh Well, now those people who really wanted to learn about photography could do so. A fundraiser was held in January to help pay for some of the cost, and to allow members to continue photographing people, places, and events they wanted to. The Club was mainly run by President Scott Owen with some assistance by Mr. Hitt. Thanks Mr. Hitt! 1. ‘‘Look I can run this computer with one hand.” 2. It’s really quite easy to work a 35mm camera. 3. Smile 4. The bookstore ... Compare couples’ compatability with Heart-to-Heart. Ounce for ounce, the soda machine lives on. Unbelievable at creating school pride. Never say something can’t be accomplished. Cookies are their bake sale’s specialty. Ice Cream cones at Kopp’s. Loves to lend a helping hand. AFS American Field Service DRAMA Artists At Work A.F.S. The A.F.S. Club struggled on this year despite it’s dwindling number of members. It’s leaders were President Carolyn Kovan, Vice President Gorri Saluja and Secretary Treasurer Roxanne Polacek. We were involved in a number of activities this past year. We had our annual Magic Bow sale and Milwaukee weih. We also sponsored a dance and a bake sale. Drama Club This year the Drama Club, under the direction of Mrs. Lindenau, was an enjoyable club for its few but determined members. Drama Club members were invited to sec plays and musicals in theaters around the Milwaukee Area. The club held a bakesale and a fundraiser in the first semester of the school year so members could go to see some famous and not so famous productions. This year the fundraiser consisted of Christmas items which was a big hit. Besides going to plays, the club also performed for citizens at an area nursing home. Comedy skits, singalongs, and choral readings were the main topics which were performed. There was also a time which was set aside to visit with the people at the nursing home. This was the most enjoyable part of the day, not only for us but for them. The Drama Club was mainly run by President Jim Heise and Vice President Scott Owen. Trung Thicu was the club secretary. 22 CLUBS ROCK STAR Students Band Together “Who is playing at the dance this Friday? I heard that the Unknown or Whatever they’re called is.” “Yep. I think all three of the bands will be playing. I sure hope they do better than they did last time though!” The newly formed club for musicians, ROCKSTAR, gave a new definition to the word “dance” in its first year at Cudahy Senior High School. Advised by Mr. ROCK STAR 23 Venne, the club featured live rock-and-roll at the usual weekend dances. The initial three bands, The Unknown, Tom Field, and The King’s Highwaymen, each had their own style of music keeping them unique. The club plans to grow in the future as new bands crop up and interest in ROCKSTAR becomes greater. 1. T-N-T, and explosive act. 2. Mike While strummin on his Kramer. 3. The Unknown 4. Kings Highway Men. We Live For A Moment Of Expression This year the Drama Club attended the play “On the Verge” which was performed at the Clavis Theater in downtown Milwaukee. This type of play was different than most others. The stage was in front of us, to the right of us, and to the left of us. The play consisted of a four person cast. “On the Verge” was about three women who traveled back in time to the present. After each performance, the Drama Club always do something. After this perfor- mance they went to a members house, talked, and drank soda. 24 DRAMA CLUB FEATURE DRAMA CLUB FEATURE 25 “C” Stands For Cooperation Lettermens Could you imagine a basketball game with out soda and chips? Or even worse with out programs? The crowds would become hostile and think that Cudahy is cheap. But because of the C-club we need not worry. Not only does the Letter-men’s club help out at home football and basketball games but they are also responsible for the mum’s sale during Homecoming. With the profits from their services, the club has donated money to the student council’s Christmas food drive, and also to the Charity Challenge. Of course Lettermen’s club is not all work and no play. When it’s thirty-five members gather for early morning meetings, they find awaiting for them milk and donuts provided by Mr. Rowe. The club is also looking forward to their annual Brewer’s game come this spring. 26 LETTERMEN’S CLUB Ski Club Hitting The Slopes Community Action Program Jim Akey Shannon Carlson Dawn Cartwright Lynn Dertz Brian Filtz Wendy Frasch Michelle Fricke Heidi Linski JoAnn Matokar Julie Reszel Gregory Rewolinski Clyde Schraufnagel Betty Skibba Daniel Sobczak Michelle Weiss Cynthia Wenzel Michelle Zielinski Reminder Enterprise Todd Wehr Theatre St. John’s Day Care Curative Workshop D.F. Dr. Wadina About twelve years ago the students here at the high school wanted a club that would help organize and transport students on ski trips. Their reasoning was the fact that some students don’t want to drive the distances to reach the slopes. It would also “espose students to the joys of downhill skiing.” which is what Mr. Schmidt says is the clubs purpose. Since Mr. Schmidt has come to the students rescue the club has been a big hit. Almost one third of the members rent skis so if you don’t own your own, its no problem. And if you’ve never skied before, don’t worry. Lessons are provided at all of the slopes. In time you’ll learn the do’s and don’ts of skiing. The best part about the club is they’re here to have fun. And if you don’t know how to do that, I’m sure they’ll show you how. Steve Williamson in perfect form. “CAP is an opportunity that allows students to receive hands on experience in an area they intend to pursue upon graduation,” says Mr. James Bromwell, senior guidance counselor. There are approximately seventeen students involved in this program this year. These students come to class here in the morning, then report to the business of their choice. Some of them include WKTI, Appearances Inc., United Airlines, and Viacom Cable. CAP SKI CLUB 27 “Spirit Bunnies” Most people think of Pom Poms as all fun and games and be-bopping at half time to the latest songs. But the truth is that these girls put in more than their share of hard work and long hours. Preparing for a half time performance means early mornings and long nights everyday. When students were asked what the best part of 87-88 assemblies was, there was a tie between the Pom’s routine and the senior guys chanting fits! So girls, your hard work, is very much appreciated and we at Cudahy High thank you! POM POMS CHEERLEADERS ] Smiles Go For Miles The 1987-88 Varsity Cheerleading Squad under the direction of Mrs. Nolte are to be congratulated for an outstanding performance this year. The squad placed third in the All-State Competition at Whitewater and also did an excellent job at keeping our spirits lifted at numerous sporting events throughout the year. The 87-88 varsity squad was made up of Captains Laura Kratt and Shelley Smith. The remaining squad consisted of seniors Jenny Lisota and Vicki Simmerling and Juniors Audra Day, Deanna Dykes, Brenda Kontowski and Shannon Last. 1. CHEERLEADERS 29 The More The Merrier ARROW “Hey Jenny! , shouts Lisa, “Would you please take this apple over to Chuck? One Jenny turned towards Lisa Lohr when it was another Lisa who was speaking. One Jenny picked up a Granny Smith apple and handed it to Mr. Chuck Hitt, yearbook adviser. Another Jenni walked towards a gold apple figurine on a desk. The last Jenny ventured over to Chuck Watson, Pacer editor, and attempted to pick up the Apple Computer. That's the story in this year’s 8th Arrow. If you wish to speak with someone, you must identify that person clearly. This year, our total number of Jcnnys almost equals the entire staff of last year. Last year's all-female staff struggled to meet their deadlines because of its lack of hands. In contrast, this year's hcteroscxual-twcnty-plus staff consists of an abundance of photographers, copywriters, and lay-outers made up equally of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. (We should have shipped some of them to Florida.) Room 142 became pressure filled at times, especially when a deadline rolled around. During that time the surplus of individuals in that room became bothersome. However, it was comforting to know that there was always someone there who was willing to lend you a hand. The 1987-1988 year also brought about change. To quote Mr. Bowc, I suppose that you could say that we were “iconoclastic.” Sr. Section Editor Gerriannc Bobrowicz led in the decision to alter the Senior Ambition tradition. The new format was not met without opposition, however, that did not change our views. In any case the 87-88 yearbook was unlike the years previous. It will also be different from years to come as we were “Alive and Kicking . 1. 3:19 and out the door? 2. Over one half of the present choir will graduate in June of 1988. The activities of the choir are varied with many performance opportunities that should suit the individual interests of all. In the fall of the year a Broadway musical type of show is presented which appeals to those who like acting, singing and dancing. Christmas, of course, features music of the Holiday season so well loved by everyone. A highlight is the Christmas Concert giving to the students on school time and an evening televised concert for the community. Spring activities begin with a annual Solo-Ensemble contest in search for those who wish to broaden their solo and small group experience. Each entry is evaluated by a professional judge and top performers in class A may enter state competition for further evaluation. In May the annual Spring Concert is held in which the choir, Band and orchestra join forces for an evening of enriching and entertaining music. And finally, to draw another successful year to a close, the Choir Seniors sing their last song of farewell. 32 CHOIR Orchestra The Proud The few, the proud, the Cudahy Orchestra. We may not be as well known as the New York Philharmonic because we can’t afford the publicity, but even on our off days we’ve been compared to the Milwaukee Symphony. Our 1887-1988 concert tour consisted of three impressive performances. Our anmical Christmas and Spring concert were held in the auditorium (the school’s, not MECCA) and the Southridge shopping mall also hosted us for a Christmas concert. We also traveled to Chicago and attended a Chicago Sy-phony Orchestra concert. An exchange with enough high school orchestra was carried out, too. And all of this wouldn’t have been possible if not for our orchestra director Leonard Bernstein, 1 mean Larry Tresp. He somehow had patience enough to make our orchestra sound good and be all that we can be. ORCHESTRA 33 Band Keeping With The Step BAND As the morning drags on, you get progressively hungry and tried. After third hour, you can cat lunch right? NOT if you’re in band. All you can do if you’re in band is stop at the bake sale and hope Mr. Dull doesn’t catch you eating in the “music wing.” If you make it to the band room without getting caught chomping on a cookie or brownie, you figure you’ve had a good day. So now, it’s time to burst into his office and scream over the intense level of noise being created by the swarming whords of band pals already in his office, “Hey Mr. Dull, can I have the key for the bathroom?” “Ah, I think Joe Shmo took it.” Mission Accomplished. Rule number one in band is: “No less than 32 people may ask for the key to the bathroom at the beginning of the hour.” After screaming at Mr. Dull you proceed to the bathroom and talk to the 24 people all ready packed in. Then it’s on to the band room, where you join in on a song that was started while you were in the bathroom. 34 BAND JAZZ BAND To all of us. Jazz is really something to be taken seriously. It involves more than taking notes- more than writing papers. It involves giving up well-deserved weekend recreation to play in some action packed competition at a place you can be sure to get lost at. Here’s what the Veteran’s say, Mike Swenson “To be a good soloist - you must practice your improvisation daily. Throw away your Rock-n-RoIl albums and listen to Harry Kirchner.” Mike White “To me. Jazz means taking the sickest most paint peeling vile and awful sounds from hell and mushing them into a solo- pure beauty.” When one asks a member if Jazz is a worthwhile class, that member can only reply: “was old yeller faithful?” PEP BAND Will make it simple. You pay eight bucks for a shirt you’ll never wear outside of Pep band. But after your first performance with the Pep band, you realize that it’s the wildest time you’ll ever have while you’re actually inside of a school. Curtain Up! Is Everyone Seated? USHERS CLUB ATTENTION STUDENTS: Ushers are needed for Friday’s performance the curtain goes up at 7:30. If you can work please be here no later than 6:45. And so another year begins. Ushers are used to hand out programs, take tickets, and show people to their seats. A feeling of accomplishment is shared by all at having seated over 700 patrons, in less than 30 min. (Hopeful in there right seats) and now the lights dim curtain rises and the show begins. Another job well done by the ushers club. MATH CLUB Math Club is an organization for students who have an interest in math and enjoy a challenge. One does not have to be an A student in math to be a member. Activities include math competitions against area schools. Each team is composed of 8 members. Medals are awarded on a team basis as well as an individual basis. Guys’ Basketball Boy’s Varsity Basketball The 1987-88 boys varsity basketball team has experienced numerous ups and downs during the season. After early wins against Milwaukee South and West Allis Hale, the Packers were destroyed by top-rated Milwaukee Washington in their Christmas tournament. The Pack regrouped to win 4 of their next 5 games. A season high was the battle against South Milwaukee there which was a battle for a share of first place. But a loss there followed by consecutive losses to both Hale and Green-dale. Matt Wesley leads the team in both steals and assists and has played outstanding defense in usually guarding the opponents top-scoring guard. Steve Baren leads the team in scoring with an 11 point average. Paul Kujawa may be the smallest center to ever play in the conference, usually giving up from 6 to 8 inches to the opponent. For the first time in several years, many juniors are gaining valuable game experience. Big men Mike Borck and Kevin Johnikin have both seen post action. Guards John Leranth and Steve Provan have both come off the bench to help Cudahy to several wins. Both Mike Thomas and Reggie Thompson have started several games, with Thomas the Pack’s second leading scorer and Thompson among the leaders in rebounds. The high number of juniors playing this year should help Cudahy in next year’s quest for a conference championship. Cudahy has gathered a positive reputation this season as a scrappy, never-quit team that has been within striking distance of every opponent so far. Coach Kujawa points out that Cudahy scored more field goals but lost in a close contest as the opponent shot con- siderable free throws. The Packers shooting from the field has been the biggest disappointment so far, shooting just 40% from the Field after 15 games. And despite being outrebounded by opponents, the Pack continues to stay close in every game due to the hustle and aggressiveness of each player. “It is a real tribute to every member of this squad that despite being so small a team, despite being outrebounded, and out-shot, they keep battling back and have been competitive in every game. No one team in the league can and will take us lightly. Though hard on the coaching staff, the games sure have been great spectator events — close and hard fought.” “As for the future, with the experience gained by so many of our juniors and the fine talent on our undefeated Sophomore team, next year could be something special.” Front: Brian Benko, Mike Clark, Steve Provan, Mike Thomas, Paul Kujawa, Matt Wesley, John Leranth, Steve Siodlarz, Scott Jenguin. Cross Country ’87: remember running seven to eight miles per day, to ten of twelve quarter miles, and the big snake hill while your huffing and puffing up it. When it came to the meets it was a relief from working hard at practices. But have more of a challenge with the Central Bulldogs, South Milwaukee Rockets, Oak Creek Kinghts, Kettle Moraine Lazers, or Hale Huskies! Get ready for thinking to yourself: How fast should I run this course, Am I going to make it up that hill, and What time am 1 aiming for? All 1 do is think of these questions and others while warming up for the race. Then before we line up in what looks like a 5x7 box is the famous prayer session. We all enjoyed all the fans we had that came to cheer us on, but we need more to get more victories. The Varsity Football Team played aggressive and put the First game away in the win column. The 2nd game against Nathan Hale didn’t go good in the first half, but put points on the board and managed our second win. Our first biggest game of the season was against West Allis Central, we all played with determination. “Special teams” caused turnovers that helped us on our way to pursue a playoff spot in the WIAA State Football Tournament and win the game. The 4th game against Greenfield could have ruined our playoff hopes. We came out prepared, did our job and buried Greenfield. 5th game-Homecoming, a non-conference game against Milwaukee Vincent. Cudahy hadn’t won a Homecoming game in 2 years, and we made sure we weren’t going to lose this one. The 6th game against Greendale was for the conference title, and all the marbles. 68 SPORTS We growled and spit, but things paid off cause we were up at halftime. Second half came, we played a good defense but not good enough. The momentum turned to Greendale, they were up 16-13 in the fourth, we were down but not out. But time kept slipping away until the clock said 0:00, we had lost. 7th game, South LEFT TO RIGHT: BOTTOM: Kathy Bray, Tracy Hart, Linda Treat, Jenny Myers, Amanda Ward, Amy Dusenberry, Jenny Myles. 2nd: Jorge Colmero, Dean Billo, Eric Scmitt, Damien Buttkc, Dean D’acquisto, Brian Bcnko, Jeff Mal-las, Bryan Olen. 3rd: Roman Gresk, Jeff Rose. And affect it did. After the assembly on seatbelts, there was a slight change in the student drivers. Everyone drove the right way in the school parking lot for a while there. The majority of ATUR Moment Of Safety students wear their seatbelts when they drive, frequently as a passenger in the front seat, but almost never as a passenger in the back. Most said that they will change for the law, but a few would rather pay the ticket. Buckle up! Cudahy Baseball, It’s A Hit! SPORTS 73 Soccer Team Improves Cudahy’s Varsity Soccer Team had it’s best year in the sports history. By posting a 7-4-1 record, the Packers captured third place in their conference. Leading the Packers this year was Matt Wesley, our senior forward. Providing support to Matt was Stasiu Fronczak who had a prosperous season. Steve Provan provided excellent mid-field support along with Jeff Gerber who had a great season, for this fine athlete. The packers success was not due to the offense only, their defense held strong throughout the year, led by John Schills and Dan Sobczak. Keith Perkins had a fine season with his good agressiveness and also provided vocal uproar. Kevin Kubitz had a great season compared to last season, since he didn’t play last season. Overall the packers can cherish this season for the sport of soccer in this Community. Matt Wesley, P.J. Mikolajzck, Keith Perkins, John Schilz, Dan Sobczak, Jim Heise, Steve Provan, Kein Kubicz, Jeff Gerber, Stosh Fronczak, Rich Weeks, Jamie Prott, Joe James, Chad Hofstad Head Coach Mr. Venne, and Cudahys Varsity Golf Team had a fairly productive season, even though they suffered losses to South Milwaukee, West Allis Hale, Greendalc, Kettle Moraine, and Oak Creek. The team then regained their confidence with some tryumphs over West Allis Central, Muskego, and Greenfield. Great effective, and consistant scores were turned in all year by Bob Heltemes, the teams 1 man, m.v.p., leading medal winner, and the teams Co-Captain, and leading motivator. Mike Curry shot steady scores all year, and really played fine golf as a 2nd year sophomore varsity player. Mike was the teams 2nd man. Tom Vanderlinde played 3rd man most of the year, mid-way through the season, he suffered an ankle injury, but came back to post fine scores in Conference finals as leader for Cudahy. Chuck Watson, new man on the team, who is just a long hitter was a great surprise to the team. Chuck played very consistant all year, put up fine scores and was a great asset to the team. Chuck is also the other Co-Captain for Varsity. The 5th man spot was constantly changing between Jr. Jim Quartemont, Sr. Bob Zimney, and a few other good sophomore golfers, who all turned fine scores all year. The Varsity also finished 18 out of 28 teams in the Spring Invitational and 20th out of 33 teams in the Janesville invite. During Regionals they finished 4th In Conference Tournament they took 4th again, and in Conference Finals they took 5th over all. In a broad scope, an adverage season, but the future looking up. The J.V. participants also played great golf too, all year. They were, Doug Kolata, Brandon Applebee, Maureen Frederick, Steve Kujawa, Rich Harvey, John Meerschaert, Packer Golf and Brian Benko. 1987 Award Winners Letters Seniors Bob Zimney Juniors Bob Heltemes Jim Quartemont Al Tomczak Chuck Watson Tom Vanderlinde Sophomores Dave Halverson Mike Curry M.V.P. Did it always? These athletes seemed to think so. Volleyball and basketball members could tell numerous stories about all the drills they used for preparation. Track and cross-country runners will agree when I say that the ten miles you ran (well almost) at practice seemed endless compared to the ten miles you drove on your way to a party Friday night. Most importantly, however, were the friends you had on the team. The friends who dragged you from the field or pool after soccer or swimming practice to the locker room. Frustration would set in when you lost your wrestling, tennis or golf match. Maybe skipping the last practice didn’t help. Practice until you are as perfect as you can be! 76 SPORTS FEATURE The Wrestling Team enjoyed a year of transition to respectability in the 1987-1988 season. With strong leadership exhibited by seniors Scott Groshek, Bill Hart, Matt Pallen, and Ted Bates. The team started to show the skills and determination necessary to be champions. With those building blocks, the future looks bright. TEAM RESULTS VARSITY Conference- 1-7 Overall- 5-9 TEAM RESULTS J. The varsity dual meet record was 2-4-1 while the JV posted a 1-5 mark. The team swam extremely well the record half of the season. They were really “ZIPPIN”’ in their 4th consecutive Packer Relays victory. The team placed 4th in both the Conference Relays and in the Conference Championship meet. The team was led by its 3 captains, junior Jeff Krause, senior Dean Crapitto and senior Brad Izzo who were the team’s number one, two and three point scorers. Dean Crapitto tied a school record in the 100 yard breast stroke with a time of 1:06.04. Dean was also named the team’s “Most Valuable Swimmer’’ for his fine season. Junior Matt Langenfeld was named the team’s “Most Improved Swimmer’’ for his tremendous improvement in the freestyle and especially the butterfly events. For starters the traditional crepe paper ceiling was changed to a type of cellophane with white lights to give a starry effect. The ceiling was put up by the stage crew who worked all night Thursday and all day Friday, many thanks go out to them. The gazebo was in a different place than usual and instead of fake flowers on the tables, there were real ones. All of the things that were changes helped to make the evening a success. The juniors had a difficult time in the beginning though, there were many disagreements about decorations, colors, sizes, and election procedures, but once decisions were made everything went smoothly. There was definitely a lot of work and thought that went into the decorations. An idea of a bridge or walkway with lights came up and thanks to the contribution by Nikki Malmberg’s dad the juniors got one. The day of decorating was definitely a fun one it was the first time besides Spirit Week that shorts could be worn, eating was permissible, and thanks to Todd Grimm the fieldhouse was filled with music, so was the south end of the building for that matter. All the action takes place in a vicarage in England, the residence of Reverend Lionel Toop and his wife, Penelope, a former American actress. Colonel Clive Winton stops by the vicarage to visit Penelope, whom he performed with on many occasions. PLAY 107 We Live For A Moment Of Warmth With the new year came some new weather. It was time to get up earlier to start our cars. How many of us prayed for the school to be closed? It took most of first hour to thaw from the early morning dash from car or bus to door. Some even didn’t mind being late for class if they could just stand under one of the heaters in the hallway for an extra minute or two. 108 COLD SPELL FEATURE Despite the bitter cold, everyone could always look forward to a steaming bowl of soup from the cafeteria. Then again, maybe not. — For the past few years, Cudahy Sr. High has held a Veterans’ Day program. During this program, we recognized and paid tribute to all those who risked their lives for our country. Veterans’ Day was originally a day set aside to honor Americans vvi no Veterans day assembly who had died in World War 1. In 1921, three years after the War, an unidentified American was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, and his grave became the focal point of yearly ceremonies held on November eleventh, the day the armistice ending the war was signed. Timothy Duening of the U.S. Navy was this year’s guest speaker. Mr. Duening achieved Naval Flight Officer in October of 1987. Taps was played to end the program. PAGE 110: 1. The crowd. 2. The boys were nominated from all sports instead of just football, and the girls were also nominated from all sports opposed to homeroom nominations. The announcing of King and Queen was also done a little different. Roses were given to each girl on court and whoever had white ones was queen and she (Cheryl Williams) went over and pinned a boutonniere which had the name of the king on it on to King Matt Wesley. The assembly was enjoyed by all, including some returning alumni. There were many games played including the traditional throwing of Mr. Bowe, the head football coach, into the pool. PAGE 112: 4. ACTIVITIES 115 We Live For A Moment Of Adventure “So do you like it here?” This is the question everyone asks me, when they find out that I am a foreign exchange student. So far, 1 am enjoying my stay very much. It is really a great experience to love for a year with a host-family in a foreign country. You learn about their traditions, their customs, their way of life. In return, they learn about your country. When people ask me what is different about the United States and Belgium, I never know what to tell them because the European countries are not that different from here. However; there are a lot of little differences like the cars, houses and some customs. I like school here, especially the activities like sports and arts which play only a small role in my country. I don’t like having the same schedule everyday because it gets quite boring sometimes. I made a lot of new friends during this year which I will miss once I go back to Belgium. I will never forget the good times 1 had here with my friends and especially with my host-family. 116 BRIGITTE FEATURE BRIGITTE FEATURE 117 Purgold October 2, 1987, was the twenty-seventh annual running of Purgold. Purgold is a cross-country meet that was started by Mr. Fred Murphy, the chemistry teacher and cross country referee. Eleven girls teams and ten boys teams participated in this years race. The Cudahy Boys team overall took fourth place behind West Allis Hale, Whitefish Bay, and New Berlin Eisenhower, but Sean McCusker took first with a time of 15:41, which was a course and conference record. This was Sean’s third consecutive year winning Purgold. The Cudahy Girls team took fourth also, following South Milwaukee, West Allis Hale, and St. Mary’s. Lisa Buerger was a fifth place finisher for Cudahy running a 12:41. The band. Cheerleaders, and Pom Pon girls participate each year and add to the event. 118 Page 118 1. ACTIVITIES 119 Hello, Dolly, this years musical, was a success despite problems early in the year. The sets showed how much work and planning went into them and they made the show complete. The Waiters’ galop proved that there was a lot of dancing talent and the choreographer did a great job to show how much talent there was. A great effort was put out by all to really make the show run smoothly. PAGE 120: 1. Don’t look under the table, Horace! 2. No, Minnie I don’t love Horace. 3. It’s a good feeling to know that our school supports the Blood Drive. All those who participated did so for a very worthwhile cause. Blood Donor Day 125 Many hours of practice go into each band concert, and this year was no acception. All of the long hours and hard work paid off though. The stage crew also put in more 126 BAND BIZARRE work than usual. The stage was highlighted with flashing lights and a flashing “Jazz” sign. The 1988 guest artist was Mr. Peter Roth, a cornetist and teach- er for Jr. High West. The performance was enjoyed by all who attended.
