Hawaiians, clones, purgolders “What do you do for 'Big Band Jazz ? If you think that was tough for a theme Mr. Dull says, What are you go- ing to do when next year’s 'Small Com- bo Blues' theme is announced. (Just Kidding!) Hawaiian Day is a great eye opener for a Monday Morning. Those best equipped are those who travel with Mr. Schmidt’s show. Clone Day this year may have been the strangest but the biggest hit. Remember all the full bathrobes? A new idea day is good once we all get the idea. 1. Todd Brown attempting to make a muscle on Hawaiian Day. 2. Ed, Ed, Ed, Ed. Ed. and Ed (Jay Linski, Tom Janokowski. Rob Hintz, Scott Kruszka. Kevin Kaari). 3. No, Mr. Sedlacek, it's clone day! 4. Big Band Babes (A. Kuchera, W. Witkowski, N. Malmberg, H. Nelson). 2 Abound at C.S.H.S. If you ever sat in the assembly on Friday of Spirit week and look around, you’ll then see that color day by far is the day that the majority of the stu- dent body participates in. It’s an easy day too. Who doesn’t have a Suburban championship shirt or purple and gold team top or hat or pin or. . . or. . . Spirit week is always an up week and '85-86 spirit week was no excep- tion. (Thanks Carol Litkowiec and Stu- dent Council.) 1. Mr. Nifty, could I get permission to . . . (or is it Mr. Zibell?) 2. Dressed in their finest, the Cudahy Connec- tion. (T. Janokowski. K. Siegel. J. Wenzen. J. Linski. S. Nelson) 3. The Hawaiian Greeting Gang — D. Ekes. L. Johnstone. M. Schilcher. M. Cousert, J. Treloar, N. Pietruszka. J. Linski. K. Helgren, S. Kruszka. 4. Ken Helgren as the traditional Super Grape. 5. Cudahy Girls really went purple and gold! 3 3 4 Hours and hours and hours The Cudahy Senior High Marching Band practiced for nearly two months for the State Competition on October 19, 1985. The band competed in Wausaw, WI along with 9 other High School Bands in our designated division, for the State High School Marching Band Title. The 90 members of the Cudahy Band had to give up some of their Saturdays for this special event. With the help of Mr. Kerry Dull, band instructor, and choreographers, Scot Meyer, Jeff Hunter, Mark Wrobel, Dino Ric- cio, Paul Wield, Ken Eichom and Jackie Manthei, the members worked hard on a new routine. 1. The juniors were fired up at the bant assembly. 2. One of the many formations presented bj our marching band. 3. Cheryl Riley grew new antennae at the Bant assembly at Memorial Field. (Thanks tt Amy Cheke.) 4. The lines got more straight with ever; practice. 4 of work. Above and beyond the call of duty. Along with a new routine, the band also played 4 selections for their perfor- mance. These selections consisted of an opener, a percussion feature, a full band feature and a closing. All the hard work and efforts put forth by the band members and its many helpers paid off on the day of competi- tion. Cudahy High won the 2nd division award and colorguard took 2nd place out of the 10 bands in our division. This was a great accomplishment for Cudahy considering it was the first time in this competition. 1. Color guard displayed their winning style. 2. The performance was even more difficult as members didn't get to always play with their own instrument sections. 3. Marching backwards was one of the special movements. 5 Homecoming Becoming Homecoming Queen was quite an experience. Standing outside the fieldhouse at the assembly with the other court members, we all felt a little nervous about walking up in front of the whole school. No one was entirely sure what we had to do, so, we just stood back, let things happen, and smiled. Then they started to call up the court, couple by couple. Tensions started mounting and then only Chris Siodlarz, Curt Link, Amy Kopp and I were left. You could just imagine what we felt like at this time. Amy kissed me and we wished each other the best of luck. As they called up Amy and Curt, Chris and I looked at each other in amazement. All Chris kept saying was, Oh my God” while I couldn't stop saying, I'm going to die.” 1. Best field in the conference ready for another game. 2. Queen Jenni Bugni striking a SEXY pose. 3. Court members Lisa Kubacki and Michelle Nolte take a ride before the game. 4. Amy Kopp and Line Gulbrandsen wave at friends and fans. 5. This isn't the rest of the court! 6. And the band played on . . . 6 1985 In a way it was a scary experience, but I made it through with a lot of great memories like having everyone con- gratulate me, riding around in a conver- tible all by myself and waving at people, sitting with the other court members at the football game, lighting the “C”, walking down the aisle with Chris at the dance, dancing with the court members until Curt and Jeff yelled switch, and feeling on top of the world. These memories will remain with me throughout my life. I’ve met a lot of new and interesting people, shared many ex- periences and will always be proud to be the Homecoming Queen of 1985. By: Jenni Bugni 1985 Homecoming Queen 1. Pregame Pose. 2. Cudahy's Traditional Burning of the C' 3. A solo court member Julie Pekar. 4. Even the finest in leg warmers! 5. Full Court Press Michelle Nolte. Amy Kopp. Line Gulbrandsen. Jenni Bugni. Lisa Kubacki. Julie Pekar. 6. Say so-long. Jenni! 7 Packer Football 1985-’86 Cudahy Packer Football has to be one of CSHS's strongest traditions. Year after year our teams are either on top or close to it. A pride is established among the guys and becomes a team trademark throughout the year. This pride is carried on to the student body. This year's second place finish was tough to take. For most being that close to the top would be good enough. 1. Jack Lynde (QB) looks over the defense. 2. S. M. Rocket end readies himself. 3. A tough moment for Packer defense. 4. It’s up in the air who got this one! 5. A Packer Fire-Gp huddle. 8 A Proud Tradition But... for the Cudahy Pack 5-2 was a tough pill to swallow. We beat the champs! We were the lone team to be victorious over Muskego! All the time, all the work, all the effort showed our Packer Pride. Congrats to the ’85-’86 team! 1. Packers' Defense wants the ball! 2. Let's Go Pack! 3. Coaches J. Bowe and B. Schmidt call in assignments as P. Langowski and Dan Gerber look on. 4. J. Lynde on a QB keeper. 9 The Beginning of Each Year Another year at CSHS starts and there's a great deal of sameness about 1985-86. Each year these same things do get better, but we can always count on some tradition. Sophomore orientation day is casual. This year the club welcome seemed a bit more active, and the whole day didn’t really drag as some have. Spirit week around homecoming had some old regulars” like Hawaiian Day, Dress Clp and Color, but it seems each year a few different people take the leadership role in organizing dress. This year a group of guys were the focus from 'Clone Eds’ through 'The Mob.' The 1st Quarter has the majority of assembly programs each and every year, but new touches were added to each one. The football coaches lip lync was a classic example. CSHS has built a tradition of sorts to each new year. It's nice to know what to expect. 1. James Bromwell (Guidance) always shy around cameras. 2. A super cheer section all year ... The 30 yard liners. 3. Back to class after a long summer. 4. Mr. Trickey's Sophomore Singing tradition. 10 A Little Tradition and a Lot of Out of the Ordinary However, as much as we can expect things to remain the same, we know with the beginning of each year there’s got to be some strange new twists too. With Spirit week, all kinds of assemblies, and new classes, it’s go slow around corners . . . who knows what will happen next. It could be Mr. Sedlacek on Cologne’ day. Ms. Otte or Mr. Zibell as Mr. Nif- ty.” It could even Mr. Colombo or Mr. Bromwell as ‘I dare you to touch my sophomore sign.’ Action and craziness abound with each new year. It’s nice to know things aren’t always the same. 1. Sophomore Orientation to CSHS clubs and sports day. 2. Cudahy Cheerleaders lookin' good! 3. Each new year — a library orientation. 4. Assemblies by the score during first quarter. 11 PURGOLD INVITATIONAL CUDAHY GIRLS 1st PLACE The temperature: 40 . . . the wind 20 miles per hour from the North ... A perfect day for running! Everyone but the runners dressed to survive, wool hats . . . thick mittens . . . boots. The team strip- ped down to silk tops and shorts . . . They came to run . . . and run they did! 1. Mr. Murphy waits for finishers. 2. Coach Pete Thalman very successful in first year as Head Coach. 3. Mr. Kerry Dull and the Cudahy Pep Band are on hand here too! 4. Sean McCusker is movin’ out! 12 25 th ANNIVERSARY CUDAHY BOYS 3rd PLACE All the miles of running finally paid off. The Cudahy girls continued their winning ways with a victory at Purgold. The boys placed third in a very tough race. by: James Bromwell 1. Coach Jim Bromwell with last minute help. 2. Jackie Melotik stride for stride. 3. And to the finish line . . . 4. The newspaper cameramen are snapping pictures of celebrities including the beautiful heirous Hope Harcourt, her finance Sir Evelyn Oakleigh, and Hope’s mother. Also we find Reno Sweeney, a former night club entertainer, boarding with her bevy of not-so-angelic Angels (Purity, Charity, Chastity, and Virtue). We find Billy Crocker arriving to drop off some papers for his boss E. J. Whitney. Billy meets Reno and she offers him a job which he turns down. On leaving the ship, Billy spies the lovely Hope and decides to stowaway and break up her forthcoming mar- riage. The crew informs us of the arrival of Public Enemy No. 13 (Moonface Martin) who is disguised as a pastor. The gangster's girlfriend, Bonnie, travels with him. 42 Billy gratefully accepts the passport and ticket belonging to Moon’s colleague, Snake Eyes Johnson, who missed to boat. Billy interrupts Hope and Sir Evelyn on deck and proceeds to make him seasick in order to make time with Hope. In their stateroom, Moon and Billy decide Billy needs a diguise so his boss won’t recognize him. Moon steals a disguise and also Whitney's glasses which leaves him nearly slind. Moon finally admits to Billy that he is wanted by the FBI. Bonnie finishes off the disguise by getting a sailor suit for Billy. Bonnie takes time out to lead Reno’s Angels in a dance routine called Heaven Hop. Reno spots Moon and Billy’s disguises instantly. Billy asks Reno to seduce Sir Evelyn while Moon witnesses the effort in order to free Hope from the marriage. When Moon enters the suite, he finds Reno and Sir Evelyn only talking which spoils the plan. 43 On deck Billy assumes a number of disguises to be near Hope. Finally, the Purser recognizes Billy as a ganster. Everyone but Hope is thrilled to be in the company of a celebrity. The second act opens in the grand lounge, praising Billy for bringing glamour and excitement to the voyage. They talk Reverand Dr. Moon into holding a revivalist meeting with Billy as chief confessor. Sir Evelyn confesses that once he led a Chinese girl astray. When Billy's turn ar- rives, he admits he is only a stowaway, after which they ar- rest him for impersonating a celebrity. Moon and Billy are sent to the ship’s brig. 44 Five days later, a pair of Chinese converts are thrown into the brig for gambling with passengers. Hope tells Billy, who is still in the brig, that she must marry Sir Evelyn for her mothers sake. Moon and Billy then play strip poker with the converts and emerge dressed as Chinese. On deck, Reno and her Angels are already homesick. Sir Evelyn tells Reno he has no choice but to marry Hope. The wedding has been moved up to take place before they dock. The Captain has just begun the ceremony, when Billy and Moon (disguised) interrupt. Reno also disguised as Chinese is presented as the girl Sir Evelyn had wronged long ago. Sir Evelyn then gives Hope to one of the Chinese to make restitu- tion. They all live happily ever after. 45 RCH SUnient Directors CAST Bryan Zawikowski Michelle Butler • M.ii) Iki (iunderson Moose Jeff Jambretz Gordon A. This year’s concert was a lot of fun. Some of the practices were long and took much work, but when perfor- mance time came around, the band was ready. The great soloist this year was Curt Hanrahan who plays the alto saxophone and he did a great job playing with the Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Band. Welcome to Cudahy Senior High Ladies and Gentlemen, School’s Band Bizarre for 1986! 49 1985 Prom by: David Zabludowski Prom took a lot of work, but that work was well worth it once the decorating committee transformed the field house into a ballroom. The 1985 Junior Prom had its ups and downs, and I (at times) had the feeling no one would come out of it friends. While people were fighting on committees and people were fighting over dates — we still had to keep working. 1 had a few problems too; I had a broken leg. I kept on going though, I went shopping and did a lot of work but I had an ex- tra 15 lbs. to drag around, it wasn't much fun. I was to have the cast taken off 2 days before prom (1 day before decorations) so Jill Crowbridge and Michelle Dovi felt sorry for me and had Mr. LaFleur remove me as chairman of my own committee — then I was removed all together. I was not too happy — but I lived, and on decorations day I went to the gym 6 out of the 8 hours of work. I limped a little but I did my share. The next day was prom. I drove (with my leg still 'h numb) with my date Peggy Janusiak (Oak Creek) and we doubled with Mark Mowers and his date Kim Narlock (South Milwaukee). 51 We went to Lori Bindas’ Pre-Prom-Party,” I really didn’t know that many people could fit in her house, it was warm, but fun! And were the appetizers good — I’m sure it was a lot of work, but I'm (as was everyone) glad someone took the effort and did it. (Thanks) We went to prom and danced a little (limped for me), socialized a little, and had a great time. Soon the dance was over and we were off to “the Columns. I didn’t get all of the dancing out of my system so Peg and I danced to the wailing of some lady and her three piece band. We had dinner, played with the magic lights (I can't believe Marty Pietruszka fell for it) and went back to Mark’s house to watch some movies on his VCR. The next day was the somewhat — annual Prom picnic. I heard it was a good time, although most people there slept through it. Mark and I were there at the start but we thought it was too boring so we left. That weekend was one that won’t be forgotten — by me or anyone else that attended the 1985 Junior Prom. The assembly preceeding the game pumped the school spirit to a maximum level: Games between faculty and students set up the announcement of King and Queen. King, Queen and Court to be were very anxious and nervous all week as the school changed their minds this year and did the ceremony backwards — No one knew what going on or what to expect. The dance, held in the Jr. High East Gym which was decorated by the Student Council with the help of other volunteer CHS students, was simply MARVELOUS. Even though Saturday night was rainy (and we lost our Homecoming game) spirits were high!!! 55 56 After sixteen games this season, a number of things were proven: 1. Everybody gets pumped-up to play a defending champion team. 2. The Cudahy Pack was competitive with every team and stayed close in every game. 3. All games were close. They had 831 points to our 832. 4. Al Rosewicz was a name recognized by all opponents as he We Were in Every Game lead the conference in average points per game. 5. The Pack continued a winning tradition under Coaches: Ku- jawa, Hecker and Meyer. 6. The 1985-86 girls' basketball season was one we thought would be remembered with a smile. Sure there are a lot of pleasurable memories, our victories, especially the one over Oak Creek, the way we played as a team, the friends we’ve made on the team, and the talks we’ve had. There are also many memories which are a pain in the . . . leg!!! Run- ning touchdowns, pulling muscles, doing drills we hated, especially plyometric frogs, and most of all the injuries that have plagued our team for the past year. Laura Hecker's chronic knee problems forcing her season to end after three games, Kerri Westhauser being plowed over by a girl from Oak Creek, damaging the major ligament in her knee, which ended her season after only two games. Then me being benched for two weeks because of a severly sprained ankle I incurred during the Parent's Night game against Greenfield. There were many minor injuries during the season, the jammed fingers, bruised bodies, and strained muscles, all of which are a normal part of any season. But for some reason our team seems to have the worst luck with injuries. They always seem to happen to CIS!!! 63 — Sherry A. CHange to Confidence A new season, a new coach! How will the team perform? Can we be as tough as in the past? As with every new season these doubts and more present themselves. But rather than doubts, we choose to see them as challenges. Our challenges this year were many. Looking back as the season comes to a close, many would agree that the challenge was met. Then We Achieved Them!! This year’s cross-country team achieved many goals throughout the season. It all started on a 90 degree Saturday morning in Sheriden Park where we won our first champion- ship — The Southeastern Title. After this accomplishment, the girls set their priorities straight and came up with one main goal. To become the best cross-country team Cudahy has ever known. We did this with hard workouts, inspiration, notes from Mr. Browmwell and fine coaching by Mr. Thalman. To direct our season positively, we then came a close second to Brookfield East at The Pulaski Invitational, won the Purgold Invitational and the Port Washington Invitational and came in another close second to Waukesha North, who were fifth in the state at the Whitefish Bay invitational. Our season had been a huge success so far. The girls became a very close knit team and with only the conference meet and sectionals left, we had to give it our all. We pulled through the Conference meet with a very im- pressive victory but we still had a lot of hard work left with the sectional meet coming up. Our determination was so intense that once at the sectional race, all we talked of was running the best race of our season and making it to state. The race itself was filled with a lot of team MOTIVATION by the girls and we soon became the first girls team in Cudahy history to make it to State. Despite the snow and bad weather condi- tions at State, the girls tried their hardest and returned home with some of the best memories anyone would ever want to cherish. 79 Sports: Definitions and Word Association Sport (spot) n. 1 — any recreational activity requiring bodily exertion 2 — fun; play. Some people use them to catch up on their beauty sleep. Others to finish up (or start) yesterday’s homework. Still yet, people leave their homerooms in order to wander aimlessly in the halls and talk to friends. During the first sixteen minutes of the day, we listen to the announcements that tell us what’s happening during the day, what happened last week in sports, what will happen in sports this week, why you should buy this, go there, and participate in that, and be reminded, “Hey, let's be careful out there.” Some people like their time spent in homeroom. Other peo- ple say they're a waste of sixteen minutes, and if we didn't have them, we could get out of school earlier. But, like them or not, they're still here. 102 2 A Necessary Evil? Well it’s December and the largest deadline is due; 80 pages. Up until now the staff basically stumbled around the other deadlines, but now it's time for some work. The staff pulled together, became friends, had fun and worked their tails off (thank god for teamwork). They had their little differences but Mr. Hitt straightened it all out, and got them with the program. His methods are different, but they work. Hopefully all the students will be happy with this year's yearbook, that is the aim, but if they aren't, they can remember that they could have been doing it themselves — but they didn't take the time like the arrow has. Delaware Ave. Cudahy, Wisconsin 53110 Phone: (414) 769-8239 No. 2 Middle School Huainan, Anhui People's Republic of China Mr. Chen Visits Cudahy From China There are primarily two types of middle schools in China: The major and ordinary schools. My school fits into the category of the former. Generally speaking, THE TEACHERS IN THE MAJOR SCHOOLS ARE better qualified, and students are selected by passing entrance ex- ams. When graduating from the middle school, 90% of the students go to college by passing the National Exams; in- cluding Chinese, English, Politics, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, and Geography. Since better and permanent jobs are available for only college graduate students, my students have to work hard so as to be admit- ted. Very normally, they spend weekends finishing their homework when the 6 school days are over, while relaxation and recreation are generally ignored. In school, they must be disciplined. “No fighting and “no dirty words” are strictly observed. Structural classes lead them to be passive in working at all the subjects. For want of communication in class, teachers direct contacts with each individual are out of class. The only thing that the student necessarily fell depressed about is to fail exams. In other words, all the students cherish the idea that they won't feel happy until they enter the university. 108 by Mr. Chen We Welcomed Line From Norway by Way of A.F.S. When I was notified I was to be an A.F.S. student, it was exciting news. I would go to the United States for a year — go to school there, make new friends, be on my own. It was an exciting thing to think about. Then, suddenly, I was at the Oslo airport and I was about to be on my way. I came to the airport about an hour before the plane should leave. The night had been long and I woke up many times with butterflies in my stomach. The time had gone by fast — too fast — but here I was, walking into the airport with my mom and two sisters — all helping me with my baggage. We came in the door and an AFS leader told me where to go. Could I see anybody that I could recognize from yesterday’s meeting? Mo, not yet. Then we got into the line to check our luggage. A lot of young people were standing in line. All of them seemed so excited — talking and laughing with each other. I felt like the loneliest person in the world. There I stood with my mom and two sisters. Wouldn't the people I knew come? Would my dad arrive soon? This was the day I was leaving and he couldn't be there in time! I checked in my two suitcases. They weren’t overweight, so that went fine. Then, on my way to the cafeteria, I suddenly saw faces I knew. Thank God they're here! I was getting more excited but finally started to realize that I was going away for a year — and that is a long time to stay away from home and friends. Was I really sure about what I was doing? Would my friends still be my friends when I came back? Would I grow away from them? These were some thoughts that went through my head. There was my dad! Finally, 15 minutes before I had to walk into the check- in. We walked along, talking. After all the waiting, I didn’t say too much; I was too nervous. There was no going back now. I was excited, nervous and frightened. The first step of my year-long adventure was beginning. (Top L) Line Gulbrandsen and some AFS friends. (Top R) Line's first day after arrival in Chicago. These are the four cardinal points around which the society is built. Sixth semester juniors and seventh and eighth semester seniors are chosen each year by the teachers of Cudahy Senior High School. In no way can you join this organization, except through hard work, good grades, service to your school, good character and faculty selection. To be considered, a student must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average. NHS Members (From L to R) Row 1: Cindy Leranth, Nicole Cuellar, Son- ja Steinhagen. The first task of the AFS was to find acts. They “scouted” out homerooms, classes, and friends. The bands were easy because they wanted exposure. The skits and acts were another story. This year’s Emcees were Kurt Meyer and Todd Brown (with a little help from Mark Mowers and “friends”). They were cer- tainly “different.” As usual, the “critics” were there. This year they went a step toward the Shakesperian” days of lettuce and tomatoes. Due to the rising cost of produce they brought eggs and bread. Thanks to these students we are now forced to end the AFS Talent Show — forever. And once again — the students have ruined something for themselves, which is really sad. And thus we close the final Curtain on “The Greatest (?) Show On Earth!” aka the AFS Talent Show. 128 The Late, Great A.F.S. Talent Show 1. Todd Brown, Kurt Meyer 2.
