Purple and Gold has never been a color combination in designer clothing, but there is rarely a day at Cudahy Senior High when those two colors don't dominate people’s attire. The two colors in combination are striking! Countless T-shirts, jackets, a variety of hats are seen throughout the year and brighten halls and rooms around C.S.H.S. Uniforms from Cudahy are especially distinctive with the brightness of the yellow-gold against a royal pur- ple background. Opponents are sure not to miss our colors. 2 A Winning Combination at Cudahy Yes, the color combination may not be seen often elsewhere, but at Cudahy those who don’t wear the com- bination are the exceptions. Some problems, none especially big. Not much rivalry toward each other. We’ve learned to accept each other and we’ve put our old school behind us. East Meets West, not anymore. Sophomore meets Sophomore is now our style. 4 Page 4: Top, Sophomore boys Traditional Assembly fight song. Bottom, East really meets west. Middle, So Truuuuue Bottom, But we can spell! 5 Packer Football Football at all high schools is one of the number one activities each new school year, and C.S.H.S. is no exception. It is the number one ‘fan’ sport and, without a doubt, has the largest gate receipts. The Cudahy Packer Football program has become well respected throughout the state. 1982 and 1983 con- ference champions and state runner-up in ‘83 as well. The 1984 Packers had another extremely successful year. So many schools would beg for the season the Pack had. But, one of the problems with consistently being on top is that second or third just doesn’t seem right. 6 A Respected Tradition The 84 season was everything a high school program should be. Great support: parents, community, student body and great involvement: squad, faculty, cheerleaders, pom pon, band and others. Cudahy football is more than tradition. Page 6: Top left, The first step towards a fizzled rocket. Bottom left. Coach Trickev with a little advice. Page 7: Top right, Kuj will complete another. The football team was off and winning again. It takes a while, but all are getting adjusted to classes. September: First Weeks The cross country teams are stronger than ever. (The boys are almost unbeatable!) And girls’ volleyball is more successful than ever. Very little candy seen as this year, we all went on diets. Another ‘Nifty’ year under way. 8 Page 8: Top, Jerry Pisula takes a short typing break. Middle, Scott Klotz playing Ms. Pac Lady? Bottom left. Another big push for boy’s C.C. Year after year the Band Bizarre and concerts are featured as well as special combos. (Jazz Band, etc.). This year we’d like to recognize the early band activities as well. (Half times and parades.) Never a “Dull” Moment A grea,t deal of time, energy, before and after, lunch time practice paid off. Congratulations Mr. Dull and special thanks to Drum Major Gene Gestwicki and all those who entertain us with Cudahy’s Marching Band. Page 10: Top, Randy Kintop doesn't miss a beat. A Rock-n-Roll Tradition The golf dance at C.S.H.S. is a “little different’’ compared to regular dances. Each year over 300 pay and stampede the doors of the cafeteria for rock-n-roll history. After the warm up band (Barry’s Truckers) on come the stars of the show: Cudahy’s rock idles, “The Who Cares.” (Venne’, Trickey, Columbo, HITT, Dull, and Tresp) Page 12: Top. Day 1: Hawaii — On our first day toward homecoming we had a beach party before school and at lunch. We all tried to “go Hawaiian” drinking Hawaiian punch and eating pineapple. Day 2: Costume Day — Some pretty spacey kids going around the school that day. Mostly “Glad Martians” or “Space Punkers” Day 3: Bib overall day — The only day looking like a farmer was cool. Day 4: Dress up day — It was tough to recognize anyone, except for the grubs. 14 Some New Wrinkles Day 5: Color Day — This year there was a battle for color, was it “Mr. Berry” or “Super Grape Ron”? Curly comes a’courtin Laurey early one beautiful morning to in- vite her to the Box Social. Jud, her hired hand, is jealous of all the attention Curly is paying to Laurey. Ado Annie gits all shaky from horn to hoof because of the attentions of two purty-talkin’ men, Ali Hakim and Will Parker, and has to confide in Laurey since she “cain’t say no...to either of them. Will, her promised feller, jist came home from Kansas City where he won a steer roping contest. He was impressed by everything being up-to-date in Kansas City, which includes the beautiful dancing girls. The peddler sells Laurev a bottle of Egyptian smelling salts and Ado Annie thoughts of the hotel at Claremore, but it’s all fiddlesticks to Aunt Eller. Meanwhile, at Jud’s Smokehouse, Curly stops in to give him a piece of his mind. Jud has lost hope and realizes all his life amounts to is being stuck down in a lousy stinkhole. Under the effects of the Egyptian smelling salts, Laurey begins to dream and see illusions of her wedding. As it continues, it turns in- to a nightmare when Jud kills Curly. All the farmers and cowmen gather and listen to Andrew Carnes. He feels they should git along and be friends. Ironically a fight breaks out. With a little help from her shotgun. Aunt Eller settles the dispute. Will wants to marry Ado, but her Paw won’t let him un- til he gits $50 cash. He had prize money from the steer roping con- test but he didn’t exactly keep it, he spent it on presents for Annie. So Will strikes up a deaf with Ali to buy these presents so he has the cash. Now that Laurey has refused to go with Curly to the Box Social, he invites giddy Gertie Cummings. Laurey. for obvious reasons, doesn’t take much of a liking to her. It’s the Box Social. All the womern-folk have brought their purty lunch hampers. Aunt Eller has auctioned off all the hampers 'cept Laurey’s and Annie’s. Ali ends up with Annie’s hamper and a three-day bellyache. Will gits Annie. When bids for Laurey’s hamper begin, Jud steps in and puts up his life savings for it. It’s go- ing — going — but not quite gone when Curly finally shows up to save the day. To sum up the rest, Gertie ends up as ‘‘the peddler’s bride,” Will and Annie set the date, poor Jud is daid, Oklahoma is O.K., and Curly finally marries Laurey, YEOW! 27 CAST OF CHARACTERS AUNT ELLER...... There’s plain, punk, metal fad, and preppie. Whatever you like, it’s style. First: The punker, he she likes the most bizarre outfits, they also like to add his her own personal touch to the outfit. Then Heavy Metal — characterized as a concert shirt, leather pants or faded jeans, and cycle boots — with an optional jean or leather jacket. This person wants respect, and most of the time gets it. There’s regular — partially faded jeans, and a Mike T-Shirt. There is a fad type — these are in and out within a 3 month period. This year’s fad is pin-stripe pants, flights, stylish but punk type shirt. These people usually have alot of money, because every time a fad changes, they need a new wardrobe. More Styles Last of all are the preppies; these kids really have the cash. La Crosse shirts (collar up), Lee or designer jeans (never faded), and mostly Oxford shirts that they can wear under sweaters with ties. These are a dying breed, almost no one can afford to be one! Those who can afford to be one, show it by never wearing the same outfit twice (unless they get 50 or more compliments the day they wear it). But if you don’t fit into one or more of these categories, don’t worry — you’re probably just the type that buys what they like, when they like to. You’re actually in the majority. Our school has many more styles, but we can’t categorize them. Everything you wear is a style; it’s what you like, not what everyone else likes, so don’t worry about being an individual, it’s got to start somewhere. 37 First 2 Weeks of Jan. Somethin’ Else These last 2 weeks were really rough; luckily we had the 20th of January off for record day. But, during those 2 weeks there was a lot of cramming for exams which really made things tough. On the 19th Senator Kasten paid us a visit to talk to us about (longer school days and longer school years.) Somehow after all the trials and tribula- tions, we managed to make it to the end of the 1st semester. Our basketball team is still undefeated. We had a little surprise when one of our better players Brian Fojtic, sprained his ankle, luckily it wasn’t too serious, we’re still on top! Last Two Weeks of Jan. In this class they talk about coping with stress, fitness, weight control, alcohol, drugs, tobacco, nutrition, and many other subjects. Advanced Comp: In advanced composition they write on a variety of topics. And at the end of every year, they work as a team to make a review publication. The REVIEW is a compilation of written works of the advanced composition students. The classes have these printed up in book form and then sell them. The creation of the review each year is a very worthwhile project. Child Development: The students in child development must carry a 51 lb. bag of flour for a week to show the respon- sibility of a parent. But they do much more than carry flour, they make games, posters, cute cakes and other appealing liking foods. Only a few boys are in child development this year, they would like more because so many more men are getting involv- ed with the child’s development. The child’s development is no longer woman’s work, it’s a family affair. Stenography and Clerical Practice Social Problems In stenography students work on shorthand speed building, producing letters from dictated materials, and original correspondence. And in clerical practice they work with office machines and different types of office equipment. Both of these classes overlap and complement each other, probably because you can’t take one without the other. In social problems students talk about problems in our society, in different cultures, and different levels in society. It’s fun to see what this class is, and what our role is in living with people. In this class there are mainly discussions, field trips, and more discussions. Top left: I bet the teacher thinks we are doing work! Top right: Maureen Olejniczak working from the earphones. Band Bizarre ’84 Band director Kerry Dull and the Cudahy High School Band con- tinued an impressive tradition at C.S.H.S. The band bizarre this year featured two super stars and a terrific high school band. The symphonic band began the festivities with the playing of EJ Capitan, Fantasia in G, Finde From Second Symphony. The concert band under the direction of student teacher, Jeff Gilchrist, followed with the selections Denbridge Way, Saxophone Serenade, Majestia. Punchinello and Stars and Stripes Forever were the two tunes performed by the wind ensemble. One of the guest soloists for band bizarre 1984, Mr. Frank Man- tooth, then performed with the wind ensemble. Mr. Mantooth is an outstanding clinician and performer-publisher. His studies took him to Vienna, Austria where he was featured with many jazz greats. Mr. Steve Zenz, one of the Mid West’s outstanding drummers, joined the wind ensemble. As a professional drummer, Mr. Zenz has appeared with many music greats. After the intermission, the percussion ensemble performed Xenogenesis. To end the evening, the jazz ensemble with Mr. Mantooth and Mr. Zenz fired up the crowd to the tunes Soul Frog and Things Ain’t What They Used to Be. There are old friends, new friends, and long term friends. Even if you or your friends aren’t pictured, you can relate to the ones that are. We dedicated these pages for friends because we thought that friends is one of the more important things that makes our school what it is. So when you look back at your high school days, you will be able to remember all the crazy things you and your friends did there. These are the real friends that make Cudahy such a “NIFTY” place. One thing to always cherish, Whatever joys life sends, Is the memory of the happiness... We’ve had just being friends. Student Council Student Council is our school’s form of government that com- bines efforts of the students and the Administration for improve- ment in our school. Through Student Council we can accomplish many things that can be shared with students. This year, besides Homecoming events, there was also Spirit Week, blood donor day twice a year, and many other school activities. 54 Top picture, Page 54, Left to Right: Michelle Phipps and Galen Lemke. The various dues in our school are in- dispensable to both teachers and students alike. Whether biology, office, library, or any classroom, these peo- ple are always there to lend a helping hand. What do they get out of it? No money, not ever a McDonald.’s gift certificate. They do earn the respect and gratitude of the people they work for, as well as the people they help. What do we get? Help, and lots of it. Let’s face it, without them, this school just wouldn’t be as nifty. Page 56: 1. You take 3x4 + 5-2 + 3 subtract that from 3,456 and get what? says Nancy. 2. “What do you mean I’ve got a detention, what’s a detention? says Barb Trefry. 3. “Oh no! Greg Hefgan, another War Game or can I change my grades. 3. Lin Peleek — Future secretary of Cudahy High. 4. Cookie Tiev — How do you do this shorthand again? 57 Conference The 1983-1984 boys' varsity basketball season was highlighted by numerous “first as the year drew towards its conclusion. Coach Ken Kujawa was in his first year as head varsity coach. Going onto the final game of the season against Shorewood, the Packers boasted a 16-1 overall record and a perfect 15-0 record in conference play. Cudahy has a 16 game winning streak at the time of this writing, eclipsing the previous high of 12 wins set in 1980. Also the Packers have shot at a school record of 53% from the floor and have clinched a Suburban conference championship with 4 weeks left in the season. Two Cudahy stand-outs. Dean Buckner and Dan Schilz, are sure to earn all-conference honors. What are some of the reasons for Cudahy's success after finishing 6-10 last year? Several factors enter into any championship year. First, the boys were well-prepared for this successful year, beginning with their freshman season. Two fine coaches. Tom Pekar at West and Jeff Cavanaugh at East, worked long and hard on fundamentals and on instilling a pride on defense. Sophomore coach JeffTrickey molded the players from these junior highs into a hard-working spirited team in 1981-83. Varsity assistant Dave Longer helped keep all the players sharp with the fine JV season. And. very importantly, assistant coach Wayne Meyer kept the boys playing and working together all season, adding that personal touch so that each player knew his strengths and weaknesses and what he had to do to improve his skills. Each Cudahy assistant shares in this championship and team accomplishments of one of the finest basketball teams in Cudahy history. But dedicated coaching is not enough. Another ingredient so critical in making a quality team is player talent and attitude. This year’s team was certainly a talented one throughout the roster. Center Dean Buckner averaged 18 points a game and 9 rebounds. He proved to be a dominating player for the Packers, despite his reserve role his junior year. Guard Dan Schilz led the Packers in scoring with a 19.6 average and a total 82 assists in 18 games. Being the best point guard in the Suburban. Dan was usually faced with special defenses to hamper his offensive work on the opposition and tossed in outside shots with regularity when left open. Senior Tom Kluck provided more OUTSTANDING shooting, 50% from the floor; moreover, his hustle and determination symbolized the en- tire team's play on defense. Junior Mark Henry was consistent in his defense and rebounding and contributed some big scoring games against Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. Reserve Brad Cretens started three games after a Fojtik injury and responded with season highs in two of the three games. Cudahy won each game played decisively. 58 Champions Reserve man Glen Hassc improved steadily and provided inside strength and rebounding. Haase was to start the final game of the year against Shorewood due to Mark Henry's ill- ness. Reserve guard john Drana. playing despite a nagging ankle injury, contributed key spot performances throughout the season. Center Al Peterson was playing excellent ball until a knee injury sidelined him for the second hall of the season; Al should be a leading contender for a starting center spot next season. But trie individuals who play on Tuesdays and Fridays are only as good as they are pushed in practice. This year's squad had players on the bench who could have started and con- tributed to a number of other Suburban teams. Seniors George Wobert. Nick u Acquisto. and Steve Bautch formed a solid nucleus that tested the starting five each day in practice, sometimes getting the upper hand. Solid play in practice form juniors Pete Peterson. |oe Ciurlik. |im Vaughn. JoeStadler. Mike Miller, and Bernie Jock enabled the varsity to adequately prepare for each opponent, as well as win most of their JV games in the process. Injuries and illness affected this year's souad probably more than in most past years. Trainers Vince Argondizzo and Dan Clark were kept busy applying their medical skills and tap- ing expertise to keep walking wounded playing. But the depth of this years squad is measured in the fact that despite losing Fojtik. Henry, and Peterson for games, the Pack kept winning. The general attitude on the team was one of confidence and enthusiasm. The accomplishments of this team are a credit to their individual efforts and dedication, and the hard work of the many coaches who helped them along the way. Team Statistics: Shooting 7 Conference: 53.8% Over-all: 52.5% Free throw %: Conference: 70.0% Over-all: 69.27 EACH starter shot over 507 from the floor. They also performed Going Out of My Head. The group which sings a cappella, Madrigal, whispered sweetly the light and airy lines of renaissance music, as they usher in the spring with Hark, the Birds Melodious Sing. These groups exemplified the energy and excellence their direc- tor Linda Seaman and choreographer Janis Liedtke emphasized. A devoted handful of choir students volunteer their time and ef- forts to help Mrs. Seaman with her many responsibilities in the music department each year. These students are her choir aides. But come six weeks before, these gentle whispers turn into deafening roars. Who are you going to take? Or, who asked you? Everyone wanted to know. Then the night arrived. The sky was dark and rainy, but no one seemed to care. The butterflies were fluttering in everyone’s stomach in anticipation of a beautiful evening it was. Beginning with the first dance each couple seemed to float off in their own world, coming down after the song was over, only to drift off again with the beginning of the next. Everything about Prom was magical. Cheerleaders, as they are called, do more than just lead cheers at basketball games and football. Cheerleaders, both JV and Varsity make all the posters supporting our teams that you see hanging on the walls in school. They also hand our ribbons at Purgold, swim and track meets. They also time at track meets. Time and effort are all a part of being a cheerleader. Practice makes perfect as they say. Cheerleading is very demanding and takes much time. Every fifth hour you can go down to the field house and they will be practicing to perfect they’re performance. They also devoted some time this summer and went to camp, hoping to get some new ideas. The hoop is another thing they paint for football and basketball home games. It takes time and some creative ideas to put it on paper. So next time you see a cheerleader, I hope you will think of some of the things I have mentioned and realize, this is “another nifty thing about Cudahy Senior High.” 74 Page 74 Left: Cheerleaders show some of their talent in the parade. He is staying with Scott Kramraj and family. Julio was interviewed earlier this year and we have some of his thoughts for you. Julio told us that he became involved in A.F.S. in a round-about way. He had a friend that went to California last year and she told him about the experience. He plans to go to college in the U.S. so he needs to speak English, so what better place to come than America. It was not, however, Julio’s choice to come to Wisconsin. He said that they just sent him here. School here is also very different for Julio. In the Dominican Republic they have to wear uniforms. Also, if he were a senior back home, he would have to have 10 to 12 subjects. They don t have any study halls or football. All classes are in Spanish!! Julio likes mostly everything about Cudahy. The people are really nice and the lake is good for fishing. He doesn t like the food too much because there are not enough spices in it. He does miss home, friends, parties, and the food. The only thing that we could do to make Julio feel more at home is to talk slower! 76 Page 76: Top left: Julio Sepulveda loves to smile for the camera. Bottom left: Julio says, “These lockers are a little confusing! Bottom right: “I like to just sit and veg!” Page 77: Top: “I’m so confused!” Bottom: “How much longer do I have to sit here?” Middle: “I really like American girls!” exclaimed Julio. 77 Arrow: More Than I Expected ... This year was my first year in Arrow and did I get surprised! I always thought being in Arrow would be easy, but it’s not. There’s a lot more to do than meets the eye. For example, we just had a dead line, and 80 pages were due. I’ve never seen seven people work so fast. There is a lot of work to do just to finish one page. This year we have a special addition to Arrow. Besides having Seniors, juniors, and sophomores on the staff, this year we also have a student teacher named Theresa Beaudry. She observes students and the whole staff. 78 Besides all the work we do, we also have a lot of fun. Each year we go to Whitewater for a yearbook con- ference where about 100 staffs from all over the state meet and get ideas for their yearbook. Afterwards, we go bowling and then to the traditional Red Lantern for pizza. That’s one day that we get away from all the other work ahead of us. Then when we come back, it’s back to work and new ideas. As soon as our book is com- pleted, the arrow staff starts on the next year’s book. The Class of ’84 Will you remember all the things that happened here Will you remember all your friends All of the people whose lives you have touched Will all our friendships end? We spent the first years and the best years of our life Learning responsibility Most of our lives so far have been spent right here Will it all leave your memory? We leave you now, but no matter how much we say We want to You know it hurts to say goodbye But we’re not really gone, we’ve just walked out the door. Goodbye to the Class of ’84 Now it’s our chance to find out who we really are And what kind of lives we want to live It’s our time now to follow our dreams To only take what we ourselves can give So friends and classmates, good luck to you May all our lives be filled with happy days Remember always the things you’ve left behind When you walk out those doors today. The Suburban Relays were held on September 22 where many of Cudahy’s relays took place. The highest place being received by the 400 I.M. relay. Although the team expected to place higher at Sec- tionals, the meet proved to be exciting. There was a great deal of competition and the team placed 5th over all with 190 points. Three seniors Brenda Kossel, Dana Schultz, and Jennifer Skrobis will not be back, but the team’s freshman, sophomores, and juniors will still compete with the pride and quality displayed in past years. They have proved to have strong potential which will help the team in the future. The swim team finished the 1983 season with a record of wins and losses.
