Once Upon A Mattress . Cudahy’s 1981 Musical Time: November 12,13,14. Place: Cudahy Senior High Auditorium Setting: A kingdom placed under a witches curse As the minstrel informs us, according to the curse, King Sex- timus has been left “speechless” until the mouse devours the hawk. During this time Queen Aggravain is in power and rules that no one in the kingdom may wed until Prince Dauntless is married to a true princess of royal blood. The kingdom is definitely not happy with the news of this especially Sir Harry and Lady Larken because they must get married. But they can’t until the prince does. Things look hopeless and get more depressing; the Queen has gone through twelve princesses and none of them are acceptable. Then VVinnifred comes into the picture dripping wet. Sir Harry insists they should give VVinnifred a try as princess, but the Queen said she must be tested to prove her royalty. So they tested her for sensitivity by putting a tiny pea under twenty mattresses. Despite the Queen’s “vain” efforts, VVinnifred did not sleep a wink that night. The Queen, in fear of losing her power, tries forcing “Fred” to leave when King Sextimus finally talks and tells the Queen to shut up. ; It has a happy ending, however, the Queen is punished, the ' lovers united, and VVinnifred finally gets some sleep. The great behind the scenes performances of the Pit Or-5 chestra, Stage Crew, Lighting ana Make-up Crews should also be acknowledged.
