Once Upon A Mattress . Cudahy’s 1981 Musical Time: November 12,13,14. Place: Cudahy Senior High Auditorium Setting: A kingdom placed under a witches curse As the minstrel informs us, according to the curse, King Sex- timus has been left “speechless” until the mouse devours the hawk. During this time Queen Aggravain is in power and rules that no one in the kingdom may wed until Prince Dauntless is married to a true princess of royal blood. The kingdom is definitely not happy with the news of this especially Sir Harry and Lady Larken because they must get married. But they can’t until the prince does. Things look hopeless and get more depressing; the Queen has gone through twelve princesses and none of them are acceptable. Then VVinnifred comes into the picture dripping wet. Sir Harry insists they should give VVinnifred a try as princess, but the Queen said she must be tested to prove her royalty. So they tested her for sensitivity by putting a tiny pea under twenty mattresses. Despite the Queen’s “vain” efforts, VVinnifred did not sleep a wink that night. The Queen, in fear of losing her power, tries forcing “Fred” to leave when King Sextimus finally talks and tells the Queen to shut up. ; It has a happy ending, however, the Queen is punished, the ' lovers united, and VVinnifred finally gets some sleep. The great behind the scenes performances of the Pit Or-5 chestra, Stage Crew, Lighting ana Make-up Crews should also be acknowledged. jnugjw£ mo 1981 unfi XSave X)yhed Kinq Scott Sedt Queen X eanne upo t rr 11111 ‘ ii 11 War £Men VjU escorted by odd XVestk a user 2 M ie (jaidosk escorted by J eaia ZiLLk f]o r Queen lancy SzduieL - CL ris (dzubeb escorted by escorted bu C anfe y ippo Sue p,t; at escorted by (jrey Petr be Imagine a clear night with the stars dancing over your head and the moon shining bright. Im- agine you and your partner dancing closely together with the light sound of romantic music behind you. If you can invision this you will have a pretty good idea of what Prom 81 was like. From the very beginning Prom 81 was a tense, nervous, and exciting moment. For the guys the question was who to ask, for the girls it was who was going to ask them. Getting the tuxes, the dresses, flowers, and making the reservations are all a part of it. But the hard work is definitely worth the wait when you walk into the gym and see how beautiful they have made it just for you. Imagine!!! Purgold: A Special Day Our cross country team has one meet that is different from all the rest and that’s Purgold. How many meets can you go to where you can hear the band, watch the pom pon girls and cheerleaders, see the queen and her court, and most of all watch the purple and gold harriers run, all in one day? The meet really starts the day before with an assembly where the Purgold Court and cross country team is announced. This year’s Purgold King and Queen are Mike Buerger and Lynn Tracy. The court is: Jackie Romich and Mike Conrad, Liz Tatera and Scott Walker, Suzanne Pritzlaff and Jim Borowski, Judy Lahr and Jim Ciurlik, and Sue Pekar and Dan Lesch. After the assembly we have a short practice in which we hear the story about Bernie. Mr. Wetzel and Mr. Thalman have done all they can to prepare us for the meet. The outcome depends upon us, and how much effort we put forth. The boy's varsity finished in 2nd place. Mike Conrad finished first for Cudahy followed by Dan Lesch, Jim Borowski, Scott Walker, and Mike Buerger. The boy’s junior varsity finished in 2nd place. Mike Stolz finished first for Cudahy followed by Drago Trifunovich, Jamie Lesch, Brendan Moran, and Mark Szymczak. The girl’s finished in 4th place. Diane Williams won the meet, and also scoring for Cudahy was Robin Koenig, Julie Otte, Cheryl Segedi, and Paula Pehowski. Purgold becomes a special event because everyone involved helps to make it a special day. 29 Broadway ’81 This year the Fiddler on the Roof and Little Orphan Annie took over Cudahy High School for a week. This year’s Spirit Week and Homecoming theme was Broadway and the whole school took part in the ac- tivities. “The Braodway theme fits Cuaahy perfectly, everyone should be in the spotlight,” said Julie Mandich. SPIRIT WEEK “Spirit Week is the best part of the school year. Everyone is involved in something, and school spirit is at its peak,” said Liz Tatera. Liz was right. There were many activities anin- dividual could become a part of during Spirit Week. The football players competed in the annual Mr. Sexy Lees Contest. Ed Kujawa was the winner. Other activities included 50’s day, Homeroom win- dow decorating, costume day, overall day, and of course Friday was Color day. At the assembly the whole gym seemed to be purple and gold. Our four football coaches, Mr. Bowe, Mr. Venne, Mr. Schmidt, and Mr. Trickey, all had their hair painted purple and gold. It was a sight to see. The court made its ap- pearance in front of the school, headed by King Jeff Sanfelippo and Queen Jacqui Hammel. HOMECOMING Spirit Week climaxed with the game on Friday night against West Milwaukee and tne dance Satur- day night. Homecoming is the last big spirit event for a senior. After that the year just coasts until gradua- tion,” said Steve Trinkl. Cudahy was victorious against West Milwaukee. At halftime Dave Mueller ana Queen Jacqui did the an- nual burning of the C”. Saturday night the Homecoming dance was held at Junior High East. Everyone danced to country rock music ana had a great time. The whole school was a part of Homecoming and Spirit Week, yet it was a time to show off your own in- dividual self. Costume day was a time to show off our individuality in the form of your costume. Color day was a day to see if you could outdress your friends. Spirit Week and Homecoming are often referred to as tne most exciting events of the school year. Mike Meyers, a member of the court, commented, “This is the best time of the year. Everybody is hyper.” Being on Homecoming court was quite a thrill. It all went so fast!” said John Schultz. I guess Mark Kossel summed up the feeling of the students. That week was great! Everyone was going nuts. I just wish the whole school year could be like that one week.” 1981 Homecoming Court Queen Jacqui Hammel escorted by King Jeff Sanfelippo Sue Pekar escorted by Greg Parker Mary Ellen York escorted by Dave Mueller Liz Tatera escorted by John Schultz Barb Kunstman escorted by Darrel Peterson Sue Schroeder escorted by Mike Meyers 31 Clark’s Courageous Cudahy Clan MRS. This year the theme for the yearbook is Up Close and Personal. To ac- complish this we had to change the style of copy. We also added more pictures which contain less people in them. This helped to give a more personal affect. A lot of extra work went into producing this year’s book. We had to do more research so that we could find the more personal side to a sport or an activity. The photographers also had to work ex- tra hard. Thinking of new and different themes for the yearbook isn’t as hard as you think it would be. You can find idea’s almost anywhere. You can get ideas by paging through a magazine or even by watching T.V. The difficult part is carry- ing out the theme throughout the book. This is done by the use of the division pages and the cover. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth all of the hassle to work on the yearbook. But when I get the book in June I see that it was worth it all. Even if I had to listen to Mr. Hitt’s jokes. 55 to .y a Pacer Staff M ruQ.r-J Ee-:o' G'K 'CS AO se' ...... ..... We have made instead of a four page paper a one page paper. We have added columns such as Sandy Scoops the Soaps, Bokneitz’s Boggle, and a new unique artistic title. In each Pacer the ti- tle The Pacer” has a different scene behind it. We also have con- tributing writers to add variety to the Pacer. But each year we try to make it a special and different school newspaper. When first assigned to this page I was really confused and bewildered about what Model UN was. Through talks with Mr. Brzycki I found out it is like a small United Nations throughout the different schools in the United States. Each School represents a country and researches its backgrounds and customs. They try to figure out solutions to the countries problems. This year our Model UN students are representing Cuba and West Germany. A Thousand Words About a Picture; Camera Club Pictured: FRONT ROW: Norman Siegal. While I’m loading my camera with film I often wonder what to take a picture of. Should it be a group shot with a lot of people in it, a close friend, someone I don’t even know, or a scenic shot. Usually I don’t know until I get face to face with it. This is usually the case with most photographers. Some people say photographers are very creative people, maybe this is true. But maybe we see things in ways other people don’t, because we know some tricks most people haven’t ever heard about, such as a double-exposure. Whatever the case photography is a very rewar- ding hobby or career. It brings out the beauty of people, and nature, but maybe the best thing about photography is the ability to recapture the past. 57 Weight Training Club TOP ROW: Gary Posda, Mark Melotik, Todd Schley, Jeff Gavinski, Steve Tracy, Tim Dykes, Daryl Janicek, Keith McKen- dry. A History (Tradition) of Success: Forensics As I see it, the Forensics Page is one of the hardest to write copy for, since Forensics isn’t really underway until after the yearbook is finished. Maybe last year’s group will give you an idea of our ambitions this year. Our Cudahy team has a history of success. In fact of the twenty-nine members involved last year, twenty-eight of them advanced with A’s at the first contest. At the second contest, twenty-two of those remain ing received A’s and went on to the state contest at Madison. Eighteen gold medals were taken home by Cudahy: Connie War- ren for her memorized declamation, Greg Becker and Terry Ogle in interpreters theatre, also Laurie Wojdac for prose reading. Coached by Ms. Unrath, Miss Otte, Mr. Sprader and Mrs. Steinke the club plans on attending at least three competitions again this year. At the competitions twelve categories are judged such as poetry, original oratory, demonstration speech, story telling and those previously mentioned. If you enjoyed Sophomore speech or just love to talk, Forensics is something for you to look into. Top Picture: FRONT ROW: Jackie DeSalvo, Sandy Kopecky, Ruth Ann Flick. Well mainly it’s a group of students getting together and going to see plays. But to one member, Lori LittleField, it’s more than just an interest. She would like, if possible, to have a career in acting. Not only acting, but behind the scene jobs, such as productions. So, for Lori it’s twice the fun. According to Mrs. Lindenau this year’s drama club was enthusiastic. New Ac- tivities were on the minds of some of the members, such as a public service show for a nursing home. 60 FRONT ROW FLOOR: Julie Otte, Darren Schach, Peter Pisarek. Art Club Visits Art Institute Seeing the Art Institute in Chicago this fall was an interesting event for the art club and me. We arrived there at 10:00 in the morning and left approximately at 4:00 in the afternoon. The weather was nice. Edwards Hopper’s exhibit on clothes was very interesting. Seeing master works of famous artists up close, looking at the brush strokes, colors, shadow, and light, is a lot better than looking at books with pictures of paintings. Life Behind the Big Black Curtain There is a lot more going on behind our stage than most people realize. It’s an opportunity to learn some of the work- ings of the theater. Working on live productions and programs looks exciting on stage, but there’s even more excite- ment, pressure, and funny things that go on behind the big black curtain. Working as late as 12:00 or even until almost 2:00 in the morning, I wonder why I spend a lot of spare time working on props, lights, cleaning up the wings, Dick’s office and sweeping, (that's a task for dizzy broads) but it’s worth it when you see what you’ve accomplished. We're like one big family. The auditorium is a second home. FRONT ROW: Debbie Grzerk, Nancy Mitchum, Mr. Homar, Teresa Parkin, Kay Klug, Dave Muller. BACK ROW: Julie Lesch, Robin Yank, Tim Dykes, Suzanne Burdecki, Dina Buelow. This school has some people that are in the middle of nowhere. If you would go in the back of the library and you look under some piles of old used magazines, you may find an A.V. boy. Even though they are in an of- fbeat place, their job is more important than where they are. And if you don’t believe me just ask any teacher that veils the word “Could I have an A.V. boy to do some work for me.” Other than reading magazines in the back or talking to a girl friend in the halls, they also: push carts around, sign out projectors, make spirit masters, copy things, video tape, and sometimes fix things. Even though Mr. Venne calls them “Baphoons” they are important people in tneir school. Reasons why people do this are: Gary likes to work for Mr. Venne, Mark ana Jeff like to get out of study hall. Bob likes to work with the video and Dennis would like to have a career with work- ing with video. 1. Ken Kubicz, Kraig Zibolski. 2. Ed Kuwaja, Tim Jensen. 3. These people are students that help the Guidance Counselors. These people work very hard during their study halls by answering phones, running to study halls to get people to talk to the Guidance Counselors and running a variety of er- rands. These people do a very good job and deserve some thanks. BOTTOM ROW: Brian Sand, Holly Trisco, Sue Burzynski. TOP ROW: Carla Schreoder, Dawn Schilz, Arnie Meyer, Chris Slivinski. It’s More Interesting Than You Think You might think of some posi- tions in this school as boring. “But could you imagine being able to hear the excuses people give when they did something that they shouldn’t have done.” According to Diane and Kelly this is the most interesting thing that happens in the office. Chris and Lynn said that when the army drug dogs came in, it was exciting because they didn’t expect it. All the office aides do very hard work and they deserve all the credit they get. It is not that easy being an office aide. If you don’t believe me just ask Teresa because just a few days after she started, she was all alone in the office and all three phones rang at one time. I look back to the beginning of school. I can remember getting ready for this year: Planning ac- tivities, and ordering things for the bookstore. The bookstore is a job in itself. Keeping it filled with school sup- plies, plus the little extras like Christmas cards and the nifty pins all take time and much work. Finding people to give up their lunch hours to work isn’t the easiest job either. Homecoming was the next thing on my mind. Getting a band, plan- ning spirit week, and decorations was hard work. This year’s theme for Homecoming was Broadway. Spirit Week included costume day, fifties day, overall day and a dress up day. People always seemed to volunteer for all the work, but when the time came to do it people weren’t there. Michelle, (our president), worked hard on Homecoming, and all in all it turned out very well. In February I have my annual sing- ing Valentines. It’s always a good time and it’s so funny to see everyone get so embarrassed. This year I tried something new at Valentine’s Day: a computer match up. Everyone who participates filled out a card of information and the computer prints out a list of compati- ble people for you. What fun! I always have little projects going on, trying to raise money, getting pla- ques for the decorating, and just do- ing things to better our school. There is always a lot of red tape to go through to get anything done for students. When I want something I work as hard as I can to get it if it will better our school. 1st ROW: Ann Schildknecht, Laurie Wodjak, Tracy Peterson. This is my last year ana I want to live my senior year to its fullest.” Liz Tatera N.H.S. has a special committee that goes around the school and writes down the improvements that they feel are needed. They follow out those ideas for improvements. “N.H.S. is a passively en- thusiastic group. We are dedicated and proud to benefit our community and we do a good job of it. After one project is completed, another will be started. This process continues throughout the year. You don’t need to be psyched up to help someone or some group, you must already have the desire to help them. In being compared to other groups, we are not as loud, therefore not many understand the purpose of our group. Those wno we benefit; know, understand, and ap- preciate the work that we do.” Mark Savin Officers: Liz Tatera — Secretary, Jeff Kubel — Parliamentarian, Steve Trinkl — President. Teri Ogle — Historian, Patty Solda — Treasurer, Barb Kunstman — Vice President. Schools are different here than they are back home where Dave went to school in Switzerland. There everyone has to take thirteen subjects which include a variety of different languages, without any electives like graphic arts, mechanics or economic classes. Dave thinks that the after school sports are great. Dave par- ticipated in soccer and basketball in Switzerland and participated in volleyball, basketball, and track here. He also is in the Art Club. 68 AFS Club Did you ever wonder what AFS is all about? Well you can stop wonder- ing because I found out for you. AFS is a club that organizes different events to raise money to send Cudahy students to different countries. The club has bake sales, sells candy, organizes a talent show, which wasn’t done this 81-82 school year because of lack of participants. Well this is basically what AFS is. There was a lot of snow' which enabled them to take many trips. The big trip this year was to Cascade Mountain, but — was cut short because of a threatening snowstorm. The practices are usually long and hard. At the beginning of a practice we all do exercises to loosen up. As I'm stretching I can feel the pain in my muscles from the days before practice. Well after I'm all loose we run a few laps to warm up. Now the real practice begins. We start off with a fewf easy 440’s. Of course, an easy 440 is supposed to be done at full speed. After our 440’s we’ll move on to other races and by the end of the practice I’ve probably run over 5 miles. Of course, all of these practices pay off on the day of a meet. Imagine the excitement of the first meet. You’re tense and nervous as you position yourself at the starting blocks. In your mind you’re thinking of all the things that could go wrong. What if you trip and fall, while leaving the star- ting blocks? Or what if you hand-off to someone from a different team? Suddenly, the gun goes off and the race has started. You work your way past most of the runners, now it’s just down to you and one other guy. As you get closer to the finish line suddenly you get a burst of energy and you are past it first. With your heart pounding and sweat dripping down your face you walk over to find out your time. You go up to the person w:ho’s supposed to have your time only to have them say Oh gee I’m sorry but I didn’t get your time. I forgot to start the stop watch.” Before I know it the season is over. The strange thing is that I actually look forward to next years season. So if you ask me why I go out for track, it’s probably because I’m crazy. But we did always try to make the practices fun. like the time when Mr. Delaney told us to do our quarter mile and we all fell on top of Rita or when we would have to run loops and do some serious puddle-jumping. Boy, did we get dirty. I guess everything was well worth it, especially when Rita Sheehan and Lisa I Ieidemen went to state and everyone was so proud of them. When I sit down and think of it I guess I wouldn't have traded the experience of being on track for anything in the world. STATE! was heard during the last quarter mile of the boy's varsity race on Saturday October 24. State was writ- ten on their hands and arms, and it became a reality. They were going to the state meet in Wausau. At the state meet they finished in 8th place. Freshman, Diane Williams also went to state, because she finished first at the sectional meet. In Wausau she finished in 23rd place. There were many more accomplishments before going to state. At the Southeastern Invitational both the boy’s and girl’s varsity placed 2nd. The junior varsity won the meet. Our next invitational was the Pulaski Invitational. Even though the sun was shining and the temperature was in the 70’s the boy’s var- sity still won. The girl’s varsity finished in 3rd place. Girl’s and boy’s junior varsityfinished in 2nd place. The hardest invita- tional was the Port Washington Invitational, and that was because of a quarter mile hill. Even with the hill the boy’s var- sity finished in 2nd and the girl’s varisty took 4th. The boy’s junior varsity placed 3rd. The next meet was Suburban and tne boy’s varsity finished in 2nd place. Our top 4 runners placed within the first 15 runners. The girl’s varsity finished in 5th place and Diane Williams took 2nd place. We can’t have a cross country team without the coaches and we wouldn’t have accomplished all that we did without them. Those first two weeks we had different ideas about practice than Miss Herman did. In the afternoon we were supposed to run and do weights on alternate days. On the running days there weren’t any coaches with us, so one group went swimm- ing in Lake Michigan and one went to sit around at a swimmer’s house. We made it through those first two weeks alright, but then came those early morning prac- tices! That was a sight to see, a bunch of spaced out swimmers drifting in at 6:15 a.m. Our junior varsity girls went undefeated. Even though our varsity had a tough conference, we didn't do too bad. We improved our positions at the Suburban and Sec- tional meets over last year’s record. This year’s season was really one to be remem-ered, as we made many new friends and had a great time. 108 a R( 1981-1982 Roster |UN or!) Practices were held daily after school with optional morning workouts. A lot of new team records were set this season. Mark Kossel set a new record in the 100 fly, 200 IM, and 100 breastroke. Jeff Johnson set a new record in the 50 free. The 200 medley relay team consisting of Steve Plachinski, Mark Kossel, Dave Rasberry, and Jeff Johnson also set a new record. The boys really had a tough conference this year, but were able to finish in 9th place, with some swimmers placing in the finals for their event. Mark Kossel placed 3rd in the 200 individual medley and Jeff Johnson placed 5th in the 100 freestyle. Throughout the season all the swimmers made noticeable improvements in their strokes and times. It’s a Mind Game Golf really is a mind game. I could go out and practice every day for hours upon hours until I can’t any more, but if I don’t concentrate and tell myself what I want to do, all those hours aren’t worth anything. When I wake up the day of a meet the same thoughts always go through my mind. That first tee-off: All that pressure of hitting that little white ball with everyone watching me, first I try to psyche myself up, and visualize all the shots I will be using during the round, because each hole presents new pro- blems and new challenges. What matters is how the course is set up. Once at your goal — the green, your problems have just begun. Many factors may result in the score of your game; like the curves of the greens, moisture on the green, and the smoothness of the green. If I don't control my emotions at the 18th hole, it could either be the high of my game or a very depressing moment. It was a year long awaited. Since the freshman at East went 6-0. Then East and West com- bined and formed the best B-squad Mr. Vanervest ever had and they went 9-0. The varsity coaches were watching this very intently and were waiting for this group to hit the varsity. Their junior year this special breed of Packers took the varis- ty by storm and has 17 players starting. The Packers mastered a 7-2 record. Coach Bowe and everybody including the papers predicted this was the best group of Packers and expected them to win the conference. The first game was non-conference against Tosa West and the highly spoken of Packers fell flat on their faces and lost. Bowe told them not to worry it was only non-conference. After that tne Pack ran- off eight straight victories. The last against Racine Horlick who was also undefeated in conference play. Cudahy easily beat them and started getting ready for the state playoffs against Madison West. The Coaches from Madison West said Cudahy hadn’t faced as good an offense as he had. This got the Pack fired up, but after the first half neither offense really looked impressive. The 7-3 West lead looked like enough to win. After halftime the Pack came out smoking took a 14 point lead. On- ly to lose on a baa snap on a punt 19-17. The excitement that this group created by their deeds will be hard to reproduce, yet here at Cudahy we know the feelings will be here again. Up and Down Season for Packer Wrestlers This year the wrestling team had their good times and their bad times. They won one-half of their dual meets beating such teams as West Milwaukee, South Milwaukee, Riverside, and Juneau. They also tied for 5th place in the Suburban Conference. There were five wrestlers that qualified for the sectional competition, but only one was able to make it to the state meet. Tom Puetz, Joel Weber, Tom Weber, and Tony Curatola all qualified for the sectional meet. Darrel Peterson made it to the state meet. Tony Curatola: 26-3 record, 24 initial takedowns, 12 pins, and 167 team points. Darrel Peterson: 26-1 record, 22 init. tkdwns, 13 pins, 164 Vi team pts. 2 Time Sub. Champ ... 3 Time Reg. Besides bringing enthusiasm to the wrestling meets, they work very hard on their routines, and also help Mr. Wetzel out. This year the wrestlerettes did a fine routine at one of the pep rallies. But this year the Wrestlerettes also had their bad times too. They started out with six girls and endea up with four. No matter how many Wrestlerettes there are they always do a fantastic job. Pictured are: Tammy Kranz, Dawn Lecus, Therese Dietrich. Picture 1 Dione Gazdik. Pom-Pons This year the 1982 Pom-Pon squad consists of 20 girls. These girls put in many long hours of hard practice, not only do they have practice during 4tn hour every day but they practice after school and even during the summer. The pom-pon girls dazzle us with their half-time routines at every home football and basketball game. They all make the half-time en- joyable and pleasant to watch. Some of the most memorable things experienced by the 1982 pom-pon squad are: — The thrill of making the squad. — Kris Henschel’s going away party. — The records never starting out right for the assemblies. — Cheryl Reszka faling down during practice. — Making new friends. — The routine with the glowing lights. — Freezing our legs to and from school. — The state playoff game for football at Madison. I don’t think any of the cheerleaders will forget these moments: Judy: Which way is it to Cudahy? Are we dumb? I don’t mean to sound rude but... Lynn: Why don’t you just turn your car into a dressing rom? Let’s do sailor jump! Peggy: Don’t forget about practice Thursday, no it’s Friday, well maybe it is Thursday, 4th hr., no we changed it to 5th hr., no, no, it’s Friday 4th hr.! Donna: Do you know where you’re going? What ate the paper? Beth: How do your pants fit, are you sure they’re yours? Cut a pepper! Diane: Fall out of any cars lately? Isn’t the person suppose to be ben- ding down when you play leap frong?
