Time fall ... Time leaves you nothing, Nothing at all ... but memories.:H 1970 to 1974: With the close of this school year comes the end of the first aspect of life for the mem- bers of the class of 1974. Through the strains of The Halls of Ivy we will be called to remember our days at CSHS; the days of learning who we are and who we want to be. We began as all others have and continued in much the same manner. The past four years together took their toll on our initial exhuberance, our naivete and our inno- cence. Our once hurried anticipation in the halls has slowed down to the settled walk of people in no greatfhurry to be anywhere. It is no longer important what the rest of the school may think of us—it is how we think of ourselves as we prepare to break our ties with the world we’ve outgrown. What we have accomplished is not an indelible mark on the school or on other classes, but we have affected others as others have touched us—and our memories shall be as varied as our personalities, interests and abilities. Is it possible to summarize 345 lives and their experiences throughout four years? We are the best—as were the classes before us and as are those who will follow. We will believe in our greatness because it is that belief which makes each class a class—and 1974 a special year for 345 people ... It is our year. We made it ours. Tomorrow may belong toranother, but this day belongs to us. And as time will continue to rise and fall, our memories of times past will linger on ... In Sophomore year they were the best; their decorations wore— That first place ribbon which showed they were—the class of '74. In Junior year they showed their strength; this time their float it wore— Again that ribbon which showed they were—the class of '74. Now Senior year had rolled around; their winnings made them soar— To be the best of all the rest—that class of '74. Now though they're gone, and all that's left are memories evermore— We'll n'er forget that class so bold—that class of '74! The class of 1974 will be remembered with joy by some; with dread by others ... but that is only to be expected of the class who simultaneously threw their graduation mortarboards high into the air on the evening of commencement activities. Our class was an innovator. We gave our class gift to the school as Sophomores rather than as Seniors. During our four years at Cudahy Senior High School we have helped the school to form strong interscho- lastic girls' sports teams. Perhaps most important of all, in our Senior year we gave the gift of life by starting a voluntary program for teachers and members of the Senior class to biannually donate blood to the Cudahy Blood Bank. And throughout all we've done, we have learned to give of ourselves for others ... Now, a class that has accomplished all that ours has can't be ALL bad. Senior Class 61 62 Junior Division MR. But sorry her lot that has to bear that first resounding chord as the choir begins a new season. The initial attempt at producing song is always the Star-Spangled Banner, which is continually carried off with much pride and gusto. The first days of choir are always trying, as the newcomers race against time while traveling to and from the inner sanctum. This always poses a problem, yet the cozy catacomb is always a favorite part of the halls of ivy . Our first performance this year was honoring America Our Heritage in the Veterans' Day as- sembly in November. This year a change was in store for the musical fans, as H.M.S. Pinafore was produced in the fall. m The Swing Choir is an ensemble featured in our contests and concerts. This bouncey group al- ways adds that something extra to make a performance complete. In addition to our general choir activities we also have two students, Larry Muszinski and Susie Messner, who belong to the Wisconsin State Honors Choir; a group of students chosen from choral groups throughout the state. Although the unsuspecting public is overwhelmed by our singing, little do they know that in reality. Miss Haslanger, it is to thee we sing . BOTTOM ROW: T. Giencke, F. Anderson, S. Lambert, S. The concert band's major accomplishments occurred in February's Band Bizarre and May's Spring Concert. Texan Rich Matteson, our 1974 guest soloist, thrilled Cudahy audiences with stimulating concert and jazz tonalities at the Band Bizzare. The Spring Concert proved a climactic finale to an outstanding year of instrumental music. Beginning in the Fall, the high-stepping football band provided entertainment for many, as interesting and imaginative routines were performed with amazing precision and musicianship. Argentinian young people have lots of good times; they go- to drive-in restaurants and to night-clubs where they dance and drink. I describe my friends' attitudes toward life with divertido ; in dictionary definition is amused merry and festive I worked last year as a disc-jockey in a large night-club, playing records and set- ting up lighting. Is it simply competition between two opposing people or groups of people? Or is it something 7 When you see a smile on the face of a victorious athlete, you see a smile that says that all of those hours of practice paid off—sore feet, aching muscles, countless calisthenics—all for a minute or an hour's worth of competition. The supreme test—when victory comes, it is certainly sweet. An inner pride swells forth: pride in yourself, in your team, in your school. A wonderful realization that you did your best and your best was good enough has brought a lump to many an athlete's throat. You get that tight feeling that makes you want to shout We're number ONE! or I did it, I did it! Sports are yours only—you have accomplished—you will reap the rewards that are more often than not just a slap on the back, a pat on the head, or an inner warmth, rather than any material reward. Here is a summary of Cudahy's 1973-1974 sports season . . . Guys' Track And Field pgs. 124-126 Faster than speeding bullets, more powerful than locomotives, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound ...they're Cudahy's Cindermen! Our Thinclads finished fourth in the Suburban Conference Indoor Meet and eighth in the Conference Outdoor Meet in '73. Leading point-getters throughout the season were: Bob Parker in the sprints, Co-captain Dave Pac- zocha in the mile, Jim Welch in the half-mile', Mike McCabe, Paczocha, Dave Woydal and Welch in the mile re- lay team, Co-Captain Tom Gill in the shot put and Mike Stanaszek in the shot put and discus. Gill and Stanaszek were two of the teams biggest assets...both went to state competition—Gill in the shot, Stanaszek in both shot and discus—and both set school records in their events—Gill in the outdoor shot with a distance of 52'11 and Stanaszek in both indoor shot with an effort of 53,4 , and discus, with a 152'9 throw. At the season's close, the Most Valuable Player honors went to Stanaszek. Girls' Track And Field pgs. 124-126 Cudahy's Girls' Track Team hurdled all obstacles to finish 4th of 10 Suburban schools in the 1973 Cudahy Indoor In- vitational Meet—a notable stride for- ward for our girls' sports teams. Head Coach Barb Calbert and her squad are really beginning to make their presence felt in our Conference. This season four track team members qualified for Track Sectionals: Edie De- laney in the 80 yd. hurdles, Lori Knoch in the shot put, Tracy Fricano in the 220 yd. dash and Ruth Sites in the 100 yd. dash. Rith Sites was chosen Most Valu- able Member of the Track team at the season's finish. 108 Sports Division Guys' Tennis pg. 131 Coach Walter's tennis Racketeers opened their '73 season with some serves that would boggle the mind and eyesight—unfortunately, Cudahy's opponents managed to return these wondrous serves all too often and much too well. At our season's close, Cudahy found themselves in 8th place in the Suburban Conference. Nonetheless, the team did well outside of Conference competition, taking 2nd in the annual Racine quadrangular meet. Co-captains on Cudahy's '73 team were no. 1 doubles partners Larry Nemitz and Chuck Misun. Nemitz was also chosen to receive the Most Valuable Player honors while Jon Schweitzer came away with the Most Improved Player award. Captains for the '74 tennis team were also chosen at the close of the '73 season. With Senior Jeff Janikowski, and Junior Scott Sylla leading the crew in 1974, we're sure to start out...on the right court? Girls' Tennis Billy Jean King beware—Cudahy may have a few prospective Wimbledon Champions in their midst! Coach Calbert's crew had a good season in '73, the third year of the team's existence. Two of the girls: co-captains Jan Meerschaert and Gail Bye, playing no. 1 and 2 singles respectively, led their teammates in scoring throughout the season and combined their efforts to play no. 1 doubles in Regional Competition. Jan and Gail went to the match seeded third; they were beaten in the semi-final round of competition by the Whitefish Bay team that went on to take 1st at State. Team members awarded Meerschaert and Bye with Most Valu- able Honors at the season's finish; Debbie Bednarz received the Most Improved Player award. Baseball Coach Wetzel's Cudahy High School nine had a spec- tacular season in '73--finishing in 2nd place in the Sub- urban Senior Baseball League. Three of our Packers: Pitcher Gary Graf, Catcher Ken Christensen and 2nd Baseman Mark Thompson, were chosen for the All-Suburban team at the season's finish. Mark Thompson, was also the Batting Champion of the team and the Conference with a phenomenal .434 batting average. The team's Captain was Rick Finco; hurler Graf was voted Most Valuable Player for the '73 season. Sports Division 109 Golf pg. 140 Cudahy's golf team teed off to an outstanding season in 1973—following through all the way to the Suburban Championship. The major powers of the team were very much in evidence at the Suburban Golf Meet...there. Sophomore Steve Curry placed 4th with a 76, Junion Scott Alexander 7th with a 77, Captain Bob Omelina 10th with a 78 and Freshman Tim Curry 11th with a 78 in the competition. Our Linksmen's 1st place standing in the Conference was their admission ticket to Regionals. On the Regional course, only Bob Omelina took medalist honors and qualified for Sectionals with his brilliant even par 72. At Sec- tionals, he missed advancing to State competition by only four strokes. At the season's close. Captain Bob Omelina was awarded the Most Valuable Player award and Sophomore Steve Curry was named Most Improved Player of the 1973 team. An elated Cudahy Coach Woerfel summarized the cham- pionship golfing season, ... as far as I know, it was the first in the school's history! Cross Country pgs. 127-129,164 The 1973 Cross Country team ran right into the hearts of faithful spectators at Cudahy's Purgold Cross Country Invita- tional this year. Varsity Harriers, led by Captain Steve Slivinski, placed second at Purgold, trailing 1st place Greendale by only two points; and our Junior Varsity team literally ran away with Purgold's 1st place J.V. trophy. Never pausing for a breath, Coach Wetzel's cross country runners raced into statewide competition by taking the Re- gional Championship; but stopped just short of State with a 4th place in Sectional Competition. At the season's finish, Captain Steve Slivinski was voted Harrier of the Year and Most Valuable Runner, while Senior Don Clinkenbeard captured the 1973 Most Improved Runner award. Girls' Swimming pgs. 118-119 Some people say that good things come in pairs... I well, Coach Best for one agrees wholeheartedly with that statement, in looking back on the '73 Swimming Season. Her team not only broke all but two event records during the course of the year, but they also sent a pair of swimmers to Madison to compete in the State Meet there. Cudahy's girls' swimming team, led by Co-captains Mary Jo Rawson and Beth Kukor, was strong in almost every event this season and set quite a number of new school records. They also sent two girls to Madison: Senior Mary Jo Rawson, who competed in two events there, finishing 5th in the 100 yd. Freestyle with a time of 58.9 and 10th in the 50 yd. Freestyle with a 26.8 time, and Sophomore Cynthia Tomasik, who finished 4th in the 100 yd. Breast- stroke with a time of 1:16.58. As a team, the girls placed 12th of the 47 teams competing in the State Championship. At the season's end, swimming awards were presented to Betsy Bowe and Chris Tyshynsky for Most Improved Swimmers; Mary Jo Rawson for Most Valuable Swimmer. Guys' Swimming pgs. 116-117 Two of Coach Schmidt's swimmers. Co-captain Dale Adamczyk and Co-captain Gary Nebel, set new school records this season: Adamczyk in the 100 yd. Butterfly with a time of 1:00.0 and Nebel in the 500 yd. Freestyle with a time of 5:39.0. Nebel also made a trip to the State competition in Madison this year, along with Co-captain Tom Brandstetter, Kevin Tschohl and Gerry Paul. These four, members of the 400 Freestyle Relay Team, turned in a 3:35.7 Sectional time to qualify for that contest. Diver Dave Ramon also shared in the title of team Captain throughout the '73-'74 season; at its finish. Diver Rick Pendzich and Adamczyk were chosen the team's Most Improved Swimmers. Brandstetter was the Most Valuable Swimmer of the year. Football pgs. 112-115 They tried, but they couldn't do it... Our Gridders tackled a tough playing schedule this fall; meeting a majority of the best teams of the Confer- ence early in the season. The playing schedule, coupled with a bushel of bad breaks in the shape of blocked punts, interceptions and key down failures, helped pave the way to a 6th place Suburban Conference finish for Cudahy. The team was led throughout the '73 season by Senior Captains Mike Gavin and Dave Ramon. Most Valuable Honors were received by Paul Wasikowski, a Junior tackle who was also honored in being named to tl]e All Amer- ican Football Team; the Most Improved Player award went to Senior center John Mostenan. Coach Bowe is optimistic about next year's team which will be composed of a solid core of experienced Varsity players. Things are looking good for September of '74... Guys' Volleyball Varsity and Jr. Varsity Teams: see pgs. 133-134. Girls' Volleyball Varsity and Jr. Varsity Teams: see pgs. 132-134. Basketball pgs. 120-123 Cudahy's 73—'74 Basketball season kept fans on the edge of their bleachers and opponents on their toes... Coach Hassemer's Packers made this year's contest for top honors in the Suburban Conference a lively one right up to the rather disappointing finish—a final third place for our Cudahy team. Our inexhaustible efforts also proved futile in Regional play when the team, led by Captain Jim Flood, conceded the Regional Championship to South Milwaukee by a final score of 71-70. Most Valuable Player for the season was Andy Bondar and Most Improved Players were John Schmidt, Flood and Bondar. Wrestling pgs. 138-139 Coach Wetzel's Grapplers were able to take down and easily pin a first place finish in Suburban Conference wrestling this year. And to augment their feat, this year became the second consecutive year that Cudahy has placed first in Suburban Conference Duel Meets. Our Matmen were quite an impressive sight to see as they compiled their 9 and 0 season record. Co-captains Scott Schoeppe and Guy Peterson set the season's pace for all; and with the fine performances turned in by grad- uating Seniors Steve Terranova (HWT), Dave Barcic (155) and Claude Peronto (138); and returning Grapplers Ray Anderson (132), Mike Shimeta (119), Mark Hinkens (105), and Mark Pavlasek (98), another 1st place finish seemed to be the only logical answer for our '73-'74 Cudahy team. This year Wrestlers Pavlasek, Peterson and Anderson advanced from wrestling Regionals to the Sectionals at West Allis Hale, and Peterson won Sectional honors to qualify for State competition. Guy wrestled to a prestigious 4th place finish in Madison. Most Improved Wrestler for the '73-'74 season was Mark Hinkens and Most Valuable Wrestler was Guy Peterson —the wrestler who rewrote the record book with his achievements throughout the year. It centered around the romance of a French plantation owner (Jim Kauf- man) and an army nurse {Karen Buerosse). The romantic mood was backed up by the serenading voice of Lieutenant Cable (Lest iMIenow) as he sang to the daughter of the out- spoken native woman Bloody Mary (Cheryl McKendry). This celebrated drama revolves around the work of. Anne Suili van (Lois KraJ- nafe); the Teacher' who is to bring light to. the deaf, b |i nd and mute yy or Id of H e! en (Nancy Paczocha), daughter of Captain (Jeff Kidd) and Mrs. Keller (Paiti Lee). Unknown to most people were the prob- lems that had to be coped with in prepar- ation for this particular play. The set had to be built he cover the-complete stage and _ , include a thrust built out into the audience; Lighting was to be intricately planned as scenes faded in and out with spotlights maining-on a solitary performer. The props crew found themselves beset with such dif- ficulties as finding a working pump and fixing broken dolls between acts. And in addition to the usual difficulties of memori- zation, many of the performers had to T spend additional time learning a type of hand sign language for their role. All of these problems were inapparent, however, on the two nights of performances as each actor and actress protrayed their character with an extremely professional air. Also hidden from the audience were the tears that fell backstage after the curtain closed. Whether they were tears of sadness .. or. of joy was known only to these people who had grown so close; not only to one another, but also to the lives of Helen Keller and her Teacher. 148 All My Sons And Miracle Worker Hay Fever 149 ■ i S ? y vs?frvJv?j'iVltl; -jk s ;; is.ii: : :■:■•■ i MmiiiiBiiirMiii(iiBiiriii wriiiinTiiriniiiiiinininnrmTriinrn T nffTrn-f(r ri-minrrinrfmTiirTrTiTTtiiu Titrumr rr ltiT '••irrrntrirrrfirviiTrtT WWW IhRI'I j!if ?vhMf'.• V•',• | V ■■■;•'i • • ' '■ ■ ■ : tfrplH f’-th lijSJ BsKmI MfifeilfeA- llliiiiHi. He most lives who thinks most. Feels the noblest. Acts the best. Festus: A Country Town P. J. Bailey Miss Serflek. How many high school students have con- templated that name over the years with a feeling of awe? This June of 1974, after 41 years of teaching in the Cud- ahy school district, Miss Elizabeth Serflek will retire from the, profession she has so thoroughly mastered. She is proud that, during the course of her career, hundreds of the stu- dents she taught were children of her former charges. ... sometimes I have had all the children in one family. Miss Serflek has earned the respect of her pupils as a tough teacher who knew how to put her subject across. And she will truly be missed ... by the very students who thought they would never live through those tests! Mr. Joseph Kukor Mrs. Dorothy Melby For more than 42 years the name Kukor has been synonymous with athletics at Cudahy high school. This past January that era came to a close when Joseph H. Kukor officially retired as athletic and recreation director for the city of Cudahy. Throughout his years here he has coached football, basketball, swimming, volleyball, tennis and golf. Nevertheless, it was along the sidelines of the football field where Kukor felt most at home and where his name became virtually a legend. Kukor, who became the fulltime athletic and recreation di- rector in 1963, said his greatest satisfaction over the years came from his association with the young athletes. Everyone has a different personality you can learn from, said Kukor, and I learned many years ago you can't judge a person until you know his background. Mr. Kukor will be leaving the students and faculty here with many pleasant memories ... and somehow Cudahy Senior High School won't seem quite the same without him. She started her teaching career using a kerosene stove and a wooden icebox. She is ending it now, 40 years later, in the well-equipped kitchen at Cudahy Senior High School, a room she helped design. Only girls were enrolled in Mrs. Dorothy Melby's home eco- nomics classes originally. Today, Mrs. Melby's favorite class is her boys' food service class. It was the first in the state at its conception several years ago. Mrs. Melby has been advisor to the school's N.H.S. for 15 years, senior class advisor for 10 and department chairwoman many years. What will she do now? ... and I tell people, 'I'm going to do my 1951 housecleaning.' That's the year she started teaching fulltime in Cudahy. Retirement Dedication 167 go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others; you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to the virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of he- roism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering up the things of youth. Nur- ture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with, imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery.and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be carefu.I. Strive to be happy. You are a child of the un- iverse no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to'be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should: • Max Ehrmann , ; T. Time rise... Time fall... Time leaves you nothing. Nothing at all ...but memories Of the people in your past. Fading faces in a waking dream; And though they'll never seem to last very long. There are faces you'll remember From the places. From the times in your past.
