Bicycles are the most popular mode of transportation in Copenhagen. 24 Haslev, Denmark Greetings to the student body, especially my Senior classmates, and the faculty. An exchange program is more than just the sending of a student from his own country to a foreign land for a year. I was fortunate to be chosen by the American Field Service to spend the year in Denmark, and I have dis- covered a whole new culture, way of life, and atmosphere. The exchange that has taken place has been most of all in ideas--between myself and all the people I have met and associated with in the many links of my year. We have all learned from each other, and have had a great time in the process. My year started on June 20, 1968, when I flew to New York, and stayed overnight in a hotel with 600 other AFSers. We boarded the S. S. Waterman the next day, and spent ten wonderful days crossing the Atlantic. On the boat, we began learning about the language and culture of the countries in which we would be staying--and our free time was always taken up by fun activities. On the first of July, we arrived in Rotterdam, Holland, having sailed up the English Channel--excitedly see- ing land, the cliffs of southern England for the first time in ten days. We had a day together in Rotterdam before setting off for our respective countries. We were 28 in the group bound for Denmark, and we took a 16 hour train ride through Germany and Denmark, and finally arrived at a language school at Korinth. There we spent a fun- filled month getting accustomed to a foreign land. We had language, history and culture classes every day, and otten took excursions to a well-known Danish town, church, castle, or landmark. We 28 got to know each other very well, and the tears ran heavily when we had to part to join our Danish families at the end of the month of July. The first half of my year was spent with the Svend Harsting family. We lived in Haslev, a city of about 10, 000 people; my sister, Anne Margrethe, and I went to Haslev Gymnasium. Also attending Haslev were two other American AFSers. My dad was a doctor; mom was his secretary. Our spare time was spent in our 200 year old thatched roof summer house by the sea. The Harstings and I had many fun times together. At school, I saw how European schools differ from those in the U. S. and my classmates and I exchanged thoughts and ideas about current world affairs. In the middle of January, I moved in with the Larsen family. For the first time, I have the chance to experi- ence life with a large family. The Larsens and I total seven; Dad, who works at home making veterinary instru- ments; Mom who works part time as a telephone operator; Anni, 18, who also goes to Haslev Gymnasium; Gitte, 17, who is an apprentice in a jewelers shop; Tonni, 13, who goes to grade school; myself, and Tina, the spoiled hound. We live in an old school house in Aversi, a farm community, 9 kilometers from Haslev. I have the op- portunity to see life in a tiny community, and by visiting friends, farm life, too. At the time of writing this, I am currently anticipating my school class trip to Italy in March. I'll be stay- ing in Aversi until early July--then we 28 AFSers will take a 10 day bus tour around Denmark, ending up in Bel- gium, where we will meet all the other AFSers from all over Europe. We will fly home together--8 hours to New York. My trip has already taught me many things, and I hope other students from CHS will have the same opportunity--! know that I will be forever grateful to CHS and AFS for my unforgettable experience!
