'JfleAAage to the eniorA As the 1957-58 school year closes and another class leaves Cudahy High School, it is well to contemplate briefly the situation in which they will find themselves. True, they are not alone concerned, but they above all others, are af- fected by a highly changed world in which they must live and work. Their future is tied up with all of the rapid progress in all phases of world relations which has come to pass within the brief span of their lives. Socio-political change, scientific change and advance combine to complicate the lives of all and make the future seem unstable and uncertain. Progress is contingent on change and considering the changes that have taken place, it seems that considerable progress has been effected. This change and progress is a compelling influence designed to make it necessary that those whose lives are affected thereby prepare them selves to live in harmony and peace with such progress as may be real and vital. There is only one possibilty of this becoming true, and this possibity lies in their ability to adjust to the changing world through a process of education designed to meet these requirements. It seems that far too few young people look upon this rapidly changing scene, with sufficient perspective to meet their needs or the needs of the country in which they live. Too few seem to understand the requirements for the continu- ance of a strong America. Far too prevalent is the attitude that the next fellow ought to shoulder the burden. If the next fellow shrugs it from his shoulder, who is left to move forward? The history of nations has demonstrated that no great nation can stand still. Nations either tend to move forward, or gradually retrogress. What the future holds for our country, depends upon the attitudes our young people develop toward their tremendous responsibilities. Parents share with the schools and churches, the task of the development of responsibility and attitude adequate to the needs of society. If we are to sustain our way of life, it will require more hard work and application on the part of a larger number of young people than is presently evidenced. Our own small school and community influence, is but oneof many which, together, can and should combine to create those wholesome and important influences which carry a people and a nation forward toward greater accomplishment.
