Castlemont Upset games were the trademark of the Cubberley varsity football team in the 1958 season. The Cougars lost their home opener as the St. Francis Lancers posted one of the biggest early season upsets in Northern California, beating Cubberley 19f13. The following week tough Capuchino gave up two first half touchdowns to Cubberley and lost, 12f7. In their next game, the Cougars were upsetfbound, leading Richmond 9-6 when the Oilers scored in the last six seconds on a 57-yard pass play and won, 129. Defense of Cubberley's SPAL title began on October 17 as the Cougars came to grips with Carlmont in the first league tilt of the season. The game almost turned into a rout as the Scot's Bill Scharetg picked up a Cubberley fumble and galloped 28 yards to a touchdown on the first play. john McWilliam, Cub- berly QB, scored the only other touchdown of the game and Shibun Tana's conversion provided the Cougars with a 7f6 win. One week' later, Castlemont High, led by the scoring punch of AllfNorthern California back Herm Hutchinson, bulled its way to a 34-6 victory over the Cougars.

The next vveek, with three seconds left in the game, John Mef Vvfilliam passed to Mike Nichols to give the Cougars a l3f7 non' league victory over jefferson of Daly City. In a night game Cuhherley took the field against Sequoia and got off to an early 74? lead. The Cherokees. however, vvent ahead in the second quarter and led 127 at the half. Bill Cadys 58 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave the Cougars Northern Californias upset of the year over previously unf defeated Sequoia, 1412. By defeating Sequoia, the Cougars upheld their tradition of never losing a night game. In the nnal game of the year for Cuhherley, MenlofAtherton upset the Cougars, 7f6.
