New head coach Bud Presley ins'l'i+u+ed a fresh sysfem of Basker- ball in+o fhe Cougar players, differing greaily from lhal of lasf year. An early season I-iighIigh+ was an over+ime 46-43 vic- lory over Camden, lhe feam lwo early season fourna- menfs, showing flashes of brilliance in wins over Los Al+os and Mounfain View and a close 47-45 loss fo Menlo- A'l'her+on. ln +he SPAL, +he Cougars look +l1e role of spoiler, com- ing very close +o bea+ing bo+h San Jose and M-A, each of whom was a coniender for fhe league championship. Afler a mid-season slump, ihe Cubberley cagers finished 'Fas+, 'raking fhree of fheir las'I' four games. Players such as Ben Brown, Leroy Kennon, John Worfhingfon, Mike Bren- nan, and Mike Nichols developed info fine baskefballers, mos+ly because of long hours of work and pracfice. Kennon, Worfhingfon, and Nichols are iuniors who should be back fo help again nexf year, along wifh Shi- bun Tana, John Whife, Jim Kennon, and Bill Dean, o+her members of +he varsi+y and B feams. By nexf year, fhe Bud Presley sysfem should be well infliuled info Cubber- ley baskelball, and +he prospecis look brighf for a high finish in +he league, especially wi+h ihe wifhdrawal of fhe San Jose schools from lhe SPAL.
