It is one of the most beautiful birds in America. The loud clear whistle or roll- ing carol is sung 1n summer or even on sunny winter days. It has been named the Virginia Nightingale because of the sweetness of its voice. These characteristics are perhaps the reason the card- inal was chosen as the mascot of the athletic teams of Cuba I-Iigh School. It is symbolic of the gay spirit and the under- lying tenderness of the entire student body. In this volume, we have attempted to retain some of the highlights of the school year in the spirit of the Cuba Card- inal --gay and kind. LARRY McLOUTH and LARRY BEAM were enjoying their work as coaches of a girls football team, which was in good shape. CHARLES BENHAM was doing well in his own Hot Rod Shop with the world's best mechanic, JOHN LAFARY. LAVERNE FORD and HARRISON HENDEE had teamed up on the Cuba police force and had cap- tured public enemy no. 1, Halitosis. This page sponsored by: -25- UNITED ELECTRIC COAL CO. --- Cuba ED CHURCHILL and VIRGINIA BARNES CHURCHILL were still happily married and owners of a large turkey farm. HARRIETT MUNSON MCCLAUGHRY had succeeded in her ambition, which was to learn to milk a cow. The Mc Claughrys owned a large dairy farm. RUTH MATHENY was with Lawrence Welk's orchestra. She played one of the twin pianos . BILL BLA KELY was chief cashier and bookkeeper at the Cuba State Bank. JACK CROCKER seemed to have done well managing his millions with the help of his wife, KATHRYN ORWIG and his private secretary, JANET WATSON. CARLOS SHAW had finally picked his Daisy and was raising little daisies . GILBERT RUHL was living in a little grass shack in the Hawaiian Islands . He certainly looked native in his grass skirt. LINDA POLICH who had been a guest star on Nat King Cole's show, had made a most success- ful appearance on LARRY McCLOSKEY'S amateur show . BONNIE RENCH, who was an expert hair stylist, was married and touring the world on her honeymoon. PAUL PIGG and DALLAS TAYLOR had teamed up to make their own satellite, which was to go to the moon and back. Did they succeed? Well, I couldn't say. They sent PAUL CANT RALL up three years ago and he has never been seen since. Several of the kids left for Hollywood after graduation. They had all succeeded, you might say. MARILYN THOMPSON had become the new champagne lady for Lawrence Welk. MARY JANE ROBERTS had become Pat Boone's private secretary and VIRGINIA HALLAM was managing Ricky Nelson's shows. JIMMY WALKER had taken over the crown that Elvis once wore. Well, with his voice and the great management of LARRY GRAHAM and DONALD THOMSON, who couldn't? ROLAND THOMPSON was the M. C. on a new television panel show. The panel consisted of JO ANN and JUNIOR BUXTON, LARRY and LORENA FORD. The name of the show was You Name It and I guess several people had. JOYCE STECK, who wanted to be the first woman to play in the U. S. Marine Band, was a captain in a woman's division of the marine corps. She was on her wayl MARY JOHNSON RYAN was playing a triple role. She was wife, mother and a special agent for the F . B. I. CLAUDE HALLAM had become one of the greatest professors at the Smithfield University. MILTON MURPHY'S ambition was to be an undertaker and BERNARD WHEELER'S was to own a strawberry patch. They had compromised and were undertaking a strawberry patch. DICK KERR, who was the president of General Motors, had hired DUANE BEAIRD and LARRY MANALO as chief mechanics for his new car which can be either driven or flown. LEONARD FAIRBURN had become the first man to win the Powder-Puff Derby . It seemed as though Sophia Loren had just divorced her husband to marry her long admired JIM CLARK. Congratulations, Jim. Dig this! JOHN MOWERY and NANCY PHILLIPS had eloped and gone on a honeymoon trip to Florida. They took COOKIE STRODE, who wanted to go to Florida and retire but didn't have any money. PHIL SPRATT was the new owner of the former Day and Palin store. ANN WALSH was the pilot of a trans-continental plane and JO ANN HENDEE was a stewardess on the same plane. LOIS BAUGHMAN and BEVERLY HART had teamed up to run a unique shop. The name was Make It Yourself. PAULINE MARTINDALE and SANDRA JOHNS were both happily married and co-authors of a newspaper column, Advice to the Lovelorn. JOSEPHINE MCCORMICK was a famous flag pole sitter. We still have to look up to her. CARL WINDSOR and VICTOR GRAY were head coaches at Vassar. They had been quite success- ful and were enjoying their work. JOAN CRAMBLET was owner of a chain of pop corn stands . JUNE PAUL and VIRGINIA WILLIAMSON were famous for their vaudeville acts . June was a fire- eater and Virginia a weight-lifter. CAROLE BAUGHMAN was a taxi cab driver in New York City. She certainly looked snappy in her uniform. DORIS HENDERSON was the new owner of the Brooklyn Bridge. After my little tour was over, I awoke to find that I was sitting in my living room. The blemish was a tie with a fine Havana ball club. The Cardinals won Olympic Conference co-championship, with a record of five wins and no losses. The team had several standouts with Larry Beam and Carl Windsor ln the line and John Mowery and Phil McLouth in the baclcfield. Several of the Cuba Players were named to various all-star teams. John Mowery was named to the first team Little-All State, All Conference and All-County. Carl Windsor was given honorable mention on Little All- State and first team berth on All-Conference. Phil McLouth made honorable mention on Little All-State, first team All-Conference and second team All-County. Larry Beam re- ceived honorable mentlon on Little All-State, first team All-Conference and second team All-County. Bernard Wheeler was named to first team All-County and Ed. Churchill was named to the third team All- County. The Morelli defensive trophy was won by Larry Beam, who garnered sixty-nine tackles. The Cardinals elected John Mowery and Larry McLouth co-captains. The coaching reins were handled very capably by Coach Zaborac. He devised a tricky but powerful offense, which fit the team very well. All eyes turned to the west end of the football field to view the Cuba High School marching band. In maroon and white the band marched onto the field and struck up the spine-tingling Star ' lil Spangled Banner. They also presented intricate halftime routines . This year the pep band added zest to the pep meetings, while the con- f cert band backed the team at the basketball games . Under the capable direction of Mr. I-lerink a dance band was formed which was an asset to the school. ln the spring strains of La Gazza Ladra wafted their way through the halls, as the band prepared to attend the contests held by the Illinois High School Association.
