D fzjfwcp Homecoming Week was long awaited by many of the students. All during the week competition between the classes was held to see which class has the most school spirit. It was a welcome change from the ordinary school week, and many of the students participated to show their loyalty to their class. There was a good turn out for the Pirates Prowl, with everyone cheering their classmates on until they were hoarse. In spite of the cold snap of weather everyone had a lot of fun. The Sophomores won Homecoming Week, showing a little bit more get up and go than the other classes. They placed first in Pirates Day, the Egg Race, and float competition, as well as placing second in many events. The Juniors were victorious on Hat Day, Voodoo Day, and Blue and Gold Day. Seniors furuors The Seniors had better luck during the Pirates Prowl where they won the Trikie 500, Boys' Tug O' War and the skit competition. The Freshmen came in first in the Caterpillar and Wheelbarrow Races. This year's skits were well thought out and showed a lot of hard work behind them. The Sen- iors placed first with their skit, based on the Happy Days theme. The Juniors' skit's plot was exorcism which was very appropriate since the Williston Devils were our Homecoming rivals. A humorous skit about the broadcasting of the Pirate-Devil game was performed by the Sopho- mores, and shipwrecked pirates on Devil's Island made up the Freshman skit. Finishing up the excitement of Homecoming Week was the game and the dance. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Homecom- ing Queen, Amy Holaday. Well, they're not quite that big, but they keep trying. The Pirates Marching Band, under the directorship of Mr. Michael Cothran, now boasts 125 enthusiastic members. Mr. Cothran hopes to have between 130 and 140 members next year and someday a band 500 strong! His plans for next year are to improve general playing and marching ability. At football games, the band's rousing songs have stirred school spirit and made losing easier and winning bigger. The school has been well represented in parades and competitions. ln fact, the band had the honor of marching in Disney World. The Pirates Marching Band and Mr. Coth- ran certainly have reason to be Steppin' High. They not only have nearly twelve-hundred hungry people to feed but they must be certain that every meal prepared is well balanced and nutritious. Looking back at the increase in the number of stu- dents over the past four or five years and remember- ing that the size of the school kitchen and staff have not changed in all that time we begin to see the size of their problem. Yet through all the difficulties and the smallest size of the school budget they still man- age to keep us all fed and for the most part happy. Custodians do a very good job. They clean and care for the school and the school grounds. With the addition of the new wing. they had an added work load, but they never complained and managed to keep the school clean and in good repair. The man who stands over us and makes sure everything runs at least halfway smooth. This man, with his loud deep voice, has a mas- ter's degree in agriculture. He taught ag for three years here at this school before he took the job as being principal. He was born in Hawkenville, Georgia, how- ever, he quickly moved to Citrus County where he was brought up. His master's was earned at the University of Florida and being a man brought up in the south, he is easy-going, level-headed, has a good sense of humor and very understanding . During the interview for this writing, we were interrupted by a teacher coming to Mr. Walker with his problems. Mr. Walker is not only respon- sible for the disciplinary actions which must take place, he also is concerned with safety, law, and school board regulations handed to him by the county. He is the jack-of -all trades and also has to be a master at all of them. Running the school isn't an easy operation, yet through it all, he is still in good humor and not a front office machine. What we mean to say is, for a princi- pal, he ain't all bad. ,,,., A, MVJ I, ,,,,,,.--v -Kg , l l Craig Marlett - Assistant Principal if , Taking a rest. D iscussion . Assistant Principal The Big MH Of all the difficult jobs to be had, being assist- ant principal of a school is among the hardest. Mr. Marlett though, has made it look easy. He handles all problems that arise with an efficiency and faimess that has come to be admired by the students and faculty. His presence in the halls is a reminder to be on good behavior, yet also the sight of a friend and advisor. With someone so completely involved in a school's welfare, one hopes Mr. Marlett finds it as enjoyable and easy as he makes it seem. I'm innocent! My x ma i,,p'? 43 ffice In the front office, everyday is a busy one with people running in and out constantly. Dorothy Williams, our school secretary and bookkeeper, and Phyllis Beall, who keeps the attendance records, maintain order in the office and are always ready to help. Sue Landers, the teachers' aide, types and runs off mimeographed material. Without her, the teachers would have a lot more paper work to do. Mrs. Jackson helps in both the guidance and front office. Robert Smith, our occupational specialist, helps students make career choices. He also helps students find jobs. Robert Matthews keeps track of those students with excessive absences for schools in the west half of Citrus County. The front office is one of the most important parts of our everchanging school. l sr MEJKLUNCH' ,.-f , ' Vs if ZS r. Counseling requires patience, the ability to solve problems, a knack for working with people, plus a great deal of devotion. The situations a coun- selor must handle are many and varied. Besides han- dling academic problems, Coach Dabney and Mrs. White also give aid to students who have personal or social problems. Through the guidance office, students can obtain information about colleges and universities in any state. Also, tests such as the P.S.A.T. and A.C.T. are set up by the guidance office. Mrs. Damron, the guidance office secretary, takes care of student transcripts, handling both the records of incoming and withdrawing students. All the people in guid- ance make up a special team without whose help we could not function. 75. 5 3 . sw sil its Decpinthought . . . With the prom weighing heavily on their minds the juniors began their many projects to raise money. Dances were held, a volleyball game between the volleyball team, the faculty and the football team and other activities were sponsored by the juniors. I Class rings, as usual, caused a lot of excite- ment among the juniors and gave them a feeling of coming up in the world. Added to this were thoughts of their senior year and graduation which were just around the corner. Knowing all the time that a lot was being expected from them, the jun- iors kept up with their responsibilities and per- formed commendably. a Tl .t ,X TOP. Anita Brooks. MIDDLE, Kim DeVane. They practice often and put in long hours to help support the teams. At pep rallies they enthusiastically lead cheers while the students actively participate. New cheers are learned every year. Cheerleaders go out and sell ads for football pro- grams to raise money for the team and paint banners to boast Pirate Pride. In addition to all this, our cheerleaders find time to keep up their grades, which must be C or above. We can be proud of our cheerleaders when they represent us at away games. They are school pride across the miles and express friendship toward oppos- ing cheerleaders. Our cheerleaders work hard to improve school spirit throughout the school and encourage our team to do their best. J- ' i , . 2 4 ' 1- if ' , - . Q 1 ,. 1 f - ,, 5 1 V 5 A fe' - A -.f as 9. From late summer to early winter and all the long autumn afternoons in between our Var- sity football team worked and practied, trying to overcome the multitudes of injuries that seemed to spring up almost constantly and to beach the jinx that plagued them all season long. Perhaps the only bright spot in season that was Get in there and 3 as mostly dark was our defense. Varsity Wrestling Once again the wrestling team had an outstand- ing season. With many of their returning veterans and an abundance of talented new recruits. They proved to be formidable - adversaries for their conference foes. Cheif Hudson and Coach Barber's skillful supervision of the boys resulted in pin after pin, victory after victory. Cheif Hudson even bought gear bags for the wrestlers to complete outfits of new sweats. They have proven, over the course of the years, to be the most constantly suc- cessful team which our school can boast. Togethemess! ! V 'SN o syts s . , 1. M sf? CW tr .4 Y., 1' -- -- ' 1 . Coach Archie Dabney drilled the boys through maneuvers every afternoon for hours and though they may have complained, it all proved worthwhile in their season. One outstanding point, that no doubt turned the tide in the Pasco game, was the extremely close teamwork. This, coupled with a Never say die attitude led to victory after vic- tory.
