And Love will steer the stars. This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. The words to this song explain the dawning of a ncw zigc!t'lihc Age of Aquarius. The turning of this age was one of the rarest astronomical phenomena. for all five of the ancient planets, Mercury. Venus. Mars. Jupiter and Saturn. plus the Sun and Moon orbitcd into 1111 almost perfect alignment. creating the scientific humanitarian Sign of Aquarius. Living in a humanitarian age, people are becoming more concerned with survival and destiny. Their concerns have brought changes and our school has been a part of this society in transition. The staff has tried in this annual to capture Change at Crystal Lake Community High School. Thc Editor Copyright 1967, I968, 1969,.1. Rado, G. Ragni, G. MacDermot, N. Shapiro. Seco VARSITY FOOTBALL Varsity football in 1969 was marred by injuries, Crystal Lake but no excuses need be made because the fighting tig- 22 ers were in every game until the end, as the scores in- 14 dicated. The Tigers were well balanced between team 20 and individual effort. Three seniors were proof of this, 42 as they gained recognition with all conference honors. 6 They were Tom Lutsch, Mike Knox, and Mike Woelf- 35 21 fer. The Tigers were able to score convincing victories over North Chicago, MCHenry and Crown, but couldnt maintain the winning formula in the other contests. Due to the injuries many juniors gained valuable ex- perience which should prove to be beneficial next year. Crown Zion McHenry Libertyville Woodstock North Chicago Barrington nd row: B. Fisher, T.G. VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY The 1969 Crystal Lake Varsity Cross Country team Crystal Lake finished the season with a fine team record of 7-3. 33 McHenry They completed the season with a 4-3 record in con- 22 Dundee ference competition and were represented in many 21 Elgin other meets and invitationals. Throughout the season they just couldnit come up with a continu- ous winning combination. However, when such start- ers as Larry Wilbrandt, Rick Metropulos, and Orv Bobek were hot they displayed a good show for the fans and won the game. Steve Benson, Tom Desmond, and other juniors gained valuable experience filling in for regular start- ers when they were unable to play. Couch Swenson believes the Tigers actually played a better season than the record indicates. However, it was far from disappointing for the graduating seniors who finished their high school basketball careers. i Row one: Managers G. Mack, K. Kamholz, B. Wyman, R. Olsen. Row two: E. VARSITY WRESTLING 15-1 The Varsity Wrestling Team enjoyed a very profitable season under the supervision of Coach Weaver. For the first time in six years, the team placed first at the Harvard Sixteen Team Tournament. They set a new tournament record by scoring 63 points. Individual champs at this event were Scott Williams, John Ludwigsen and Ken Jacobs. The grapplers were strong contenders for the conference title, remaining undefeated through their first fifteen matches. They ended their season with a 15-1 record. The only defeat they suffered was to the North Chicago War- hawks who placed first in the state this year. At the Conference Tournament, Crystal Lake placed second and had three conference champions. They were Scott Williams, in the 98 1b. division, John Ludwigsen, at the 115 1b. division, and Dave Johnson, at the 175 lb. division. Those who placed second were Ken Jacobs, at the 123 1b. division and Mike Woelffer, at the 165 1b. divi- sion. The team also placed second at the District Tournament. Here Williams, Ludwigsen and Franz took first in their weight classes and Ken Jacobs took a second. These boys then advanced to Sectionals. Scott Williams TIGERS OPPONENT took first place and earned a seat at the State Tourna- ment. There Scott took second place and helped them to place thirteenth in the state. In his first match there he pinth a wrestler from Palatine. In his second two matches to win the district title. Scott dccisioncd two boys from Fenton and Elk Grove, by a 4-3 score. The next step for Scott was the sectional tourna- ment at West Leyden. To become the sectional champ he won three consecutive matches against Larkin. East Lcyden. and finally Maine Wast. This brought Scott to the state tournament at Illinois State at Normal. His first match there was an 8-2 victory over a boy from Glenbrook North. He then wrestled two consecutive pins over Thornridgc and Downers Grove North. These two matches earned Scott the privilege of wres- tling in the final state tournament match. After a bitter contest. he was defeated by Mike Perusky 0f Wakegan by the score of 3-2. So ended the season for Scott Williams by finish- ing second in the state. With outstanding team effort they were able to defeat their first opponent by the score of 72-70. The Tigers then took on Irving Crown in their second game of the tournament. Playing comeback basketball the Tigers came back in the second half. after trailing by IO points. to beat Crown 4541. The stage was set for the final game of the regional tournament. It was to be CL. and Barrington in a battle for the regional crown. To keep the pressure on Coach Swenson and his club. was the fact that Crystal Lake had not beaten Bamngton in five years. The teams were never separated by more than 3 points during the entire contest. As a result of the outstanding effort of the entire Tiger squad. especially that of Rick Metropulos. who scored 29 points. the Tigers came out on top 63-61. In the first game of the sectional tourney at East Aurora, the Tigers went down to defeat at the hands of East Aurora by the score of 83-67. But the 1969-70 Tiger basketball team had made their mark by winning the first Regional Championship in ten years. The varsity track team was strong this year, but with only four seniors leaving this year the team will be even better next season. The cindermen compiled very impressive records of 23-0 in non-conference dual meets and 6-1 in the conference meets. The varsity track team also took first place in the County meet held in Crystal Lake. The Tigers did not make as strong a showing in the District and Conference meets as in the regular season. But the experience will prove valuable next year for the young team. However. at the District meet Mike Woelfer did win the pole vault event and advanced to the state tournament in Champaign. The competition was tough and Mike cleared 13 feet before he was eliminated. During the outdoor season the team also had to make up for the loss of Steve Schenk. Steve went down state last year in the Quarter mile. He was unable to participate because of the ineligibility rules about age after indoor track. 82 FROSH-SOPH TRACK First row: J. Dial, M. Louis, D. Third row: Coach Don Nead, G. Leach, B. Miller. Once again the tennis team playboys have romped their way through another season. They lost only three dual matches and came in third in the conference tour- nament. The C. L. netmen also claimed their third straight District championship. This was the highlight of the year as the tennis team sent Flve out of the pos- sible six players downstate. They were, at singles Skip Herrick, and at doubles Tom OlDonnell and John Rob- ertson, and Teddy Gilstrap and Brion Miller. The team will lose only two of its regular varsity players next year. This should enable the team to be just as strong next season. 83 iiiihkfxwf; U r' 7 , .. 2.336 I . 1 , . ' I First row: G. Plews, S. Herrick, T. OWDonnell, J. Robertson, V. Fox. Second row: D. The 1970 varsity golf team recorded a winning season all the way around. They had an overall record of ll-2. ln conference play they were 5-2, not receiv- ing any defeats until their tinal two matches. The team placed second in the conference meet and third in the district contest. This yearis team appeared to be going all the way when they started off with an eleven match winning streak. But the Tiger golfers lost their last two matches in rough competition. Two of the outstanding players on the team were Phil Riley and Mike Hayes. Mike also received the most valuable player award for the third year in a row. Mike is a senior but Phil will be back next year to try and improve on this years already impressive record. The Tiger baseball team had its hands and gloves full this year in one of the toughest conferences around. The race for the conference title was up for grabs all season long and C. 'L. was in the thick of it until the very end. The Tigers hit a slight slump at the end of the season and lost their chances for finishing at the top. Even when the team couldnlt put it all together, they still excelled at individual positions. Gary Shield was voted the most valuable player for his fine work and spirit all season. Nick Mariage. Charlie Green, Clyde Robertson, and Steve Martel also had good sea- sons in the field and in the batting cage. 89 FROSH-SOPH BASEBALL 151.:- l - 1'5. Q I ' i; . I I 'x '. , '. J UNIORS As Juniors we began our third year of high school with more excitement than ever. It was our turn to be looked up to by the under-Classmen, our turn to show the other classes what real spirit and determination was. We showed our determination by finally producing a winning float and a Queenls throne that will long be remembered. We will never forget working the concessions at Homecoming and at Basketball Regionals, or all the other times we nearly drove Mr. Barker crazy. In fact, we will never be able to forget a great sponsor like Mr. Barker. And then there was Prom 70, ilA Time For Us? Only the class of 71 could have given their seniors a Prom with as many great memories as Prom 70 at Pheasant Run Lodge. We began our Ju- nior year with the hope of success. We succeeded. zW+ow+w zwm?mzw Baldoni Balfour . Barchard Barker . Bauman Bellerud Bennett Benson Berger Biel Bird Black Blank Bobeck Bockman . Bogers . Bohl Bothun Boudet . Bordreau . SOPHOMORES As sophomores we continued to live up to our reputation of knowing how to have a good time. Our first responsibility took place during Homecoming week when we made a float twhich was well protected from destructive forces by showers of apples thrown at passing carsL There was an enthusiastic participation in decorating the sophomore hall and we finished the week by wrap- ping goalposts for the game. All Dogpatchers turned out as we hosted a most successful Sadie Hawkins dance, where many Sadies caught their man and some were even hitched by ttMarryint Sam? Pumpkins, cornstalks, and straw completed the very artistic farm scene and later proved ex- cellent ammunition for rambunctious party-goers. Many Class members participated in the various sports throughout the year with a promise of good material in the coming years. Memories Of ev- eryday incidents will be kept the longest by the class of 1972. Adele Gott Hard-working sponsors for the sophomore class were Mr. Beringer and Mrs. Waschbusch. . Alford . Anderson . F RESHMEN In the first couple of months. thc Class of 73 did the usual freshman things, such as getting lost and taking directions to the third 11001; but later we proved to he a pretty special Cl'dSS. Along with our first experiences with Hoats, concession Stands and uttcr-gzlmc dances, we did something that had never been done before by freshmen. WC run our own big dance. From this. we gained the experience of making decorations. setting up a dance. and also began to learn the role of leadership. Now we are ready to make our sophomore class the best one yet.
