The team's defensive play was outstanding as they allowed only two touchdowns in the first six games. Starting offthe season in good form by wins over Niles and Palatine with identical scoresof 6 to O. Although the offense oolul only squeeze out one touchdown in each game, it was sufficient as the defensive team showed what they could do. Dun- dee was next to fall to the Tigers by a 27 to 6 score, averting the shutout by a last minute touchdown. Returning to their home field, the Crystal Lake boys trounced McHenry 19 to O. Woodstock was an easy mark for the deadly Tigers as the offense rolled up 31 points against 6 for the Blue Streaks. Zion-Benton, hard hit by the flu, was unable to meet its obligations as the Tigers Homecom- ing opponents and had no alternative but to forfeit the game by the scoreof 2 to 0. For the first time the Tigers tasted defeat as they traveled to Barrington where a second half splurge gave the Broncos a win, 33 to 25. All hopes of con- ference recognition were lost when Libertyville beat the Tigers in the final game of the season 25 to 21. Final record for the season was six wins and two losses. Keith Kinderman was this year's recipient of the Charles Martin Award for the best display of defensive football throughout the entire season. 68 Varsity Football Crystal Lake Crystal Lake Crystal Lake Crystal Lake Crystal Lake 'Crystal Lake Crystal Lake Crystal Lake 6 wins 2 losses 'Forfeit Niles Palatine Dundee Mcl-lenry Woodstock Zion Benton Barrington Libertyville P. Beside the excellent season tumed in by the Tiger team, cross country was elected a varsity sport for the first time. Coach Metcalf was allowed to present seven major awards to his top runners. The thinclads jumped off to a quick start by taking their first two meets from Waukegan and DeKalb. Then atough St. Charles team, which later ran in the state finals, set the Tigers back by a score of 22-33. Follow- ing this loss the C. L, sprinters took three meets in a row--Woodstock and North Chicago in dual meetsg and McHenry and Richmond in a three -team affair, In the midst of aflu epidemic, the Tigers dropped a close one to DeKalb, 27 to 28. They came back to down Palatine a second time, but a tri-meet with Woodstock and Elgin was scratched off the schedule by the flu. Due to loss of practice and sickness, the Tigers did not finish up to expectations when they ran in the St. Charles Invitational and the District meet at DeKalb. Regaining some of their lost form, they downed Elgin 28 to 29. To finish up their season the Tigers swept all the honors at the McHenry County Meet. Skip King shaved more than a second off the old record as he and his teammates took seven out of the ten trophies that were awarded. Final tabulation showed a record of eight wins and two losses. 70 Sophomore Football ROW 1: R. Oerkfitz, D. Cac, L. Benson, L. Oberlin, R. Sokolowski, T. Roels, P. Duda, M. Mooney, Mgr. D.Kruse. Starting on the wrong foot, the Tigers suffered their worst defeat of the year, a 65 to 51 setback by a strong Maine team. Recovering, they won their first conference game from Zion-Benton. Barrington then disposed of the Tigers by a score of 66 to 63. Following an easy win over Woodstock, the Tigers stumbled over an- other conference foe, Dundee, by a two point margin, 51 to 49. Bouncing back, the Crystal Lake boys took three in a row before entering competition in the Holiday Tournamenton their home floor. In a close battle, Evanston clipped the Tigers by a 53 to 52 tilt. The Tigers then settled for the third place trophy as they set down St. Edwards by a decisive 69 to 48. After polishing off Libertyville, the Tigers took three more in a row to cap- ture first place in the last McHenry County Tournament to be played. It was the fifth straight time Crystal Lake took the county crown. Once again, the Tigers beat St. Edwards but dropped the next ball game to West Aurora, 70 to 67. Gaining peak form, Coach Menke's boys made an all- out attempt to take over the conference leadership. Important wins over Bar- rington and Dundee put the Tigers in a tie for the conference championship when the season ended. Winning 15 of their last 16 games the Tigers closed out the regular season with a record of twenty wins and five losses. 72 R , .F ,f '53 aw vi 'ka ,fy N R F 'I Q ' Q:f if f A g if Sophomore Basketball ROW 1: T. Mr. Metcalf assisted by Mr. Baumann helped bring the team to many victories. The Mcl-lenry County Meet found Crystal Lake in first place by a wide margin. The North Suburban Conference Meet proved to be a closer struggle for first place, but again Mr. Metcalf's boys took the honors. In the District Meet, the 880 Relay Team tied for second, which qualified them for the state. They were: Bob Falkenberg, Bob Finnessy, Keith Kinderman, and Inno Rasina. Keith Kinderman placed second in the High Hurdles with a timing of 15.2 seconds. He also took sixth place in the state competition. Bob Finnessy was third in the Low Hurdles, his timing being 20.7 seconds. Golfers Have Losing Streak The 1957 Tiger golf team was anything but successful. Under the able direction of Mr. Larson, the unex- perienced Tigers could win only a single match in their seven meet schedule. Barrington, McHenry, Lake Forest, Zion-Benton, Libertyville, and Elgin all found the Tigers a soft touch. Efforts at the Conference Meet were also unsuccessful as the boys finished in fifth place. Keeping the season from being a total loss was a decisive victory over Dundee in the year's final action. Racketmen Win Most Matches Crystal Lake's 1957 tennis team turned in a proud record of six wins and two losses. The first match of the season brought much despair as Arlington Heights shutout the Tigers 5 to 0. More encouraging was a win over Zion-Benton, but it was closely followed by the year's second loss, a 3 to 2 setback by Lake Forest. Closing out the season in good form, the Crystal Lake racketmen took five matches in a row, two each from Barrington and Woodstock and one from Libertyville. In the Conference Tournament, the Tigers finished fourth among the six teams entered. One bright spot was Dennis Newman who took second place in the singles division. Season Rough on Wrestlers I This season 's Tiger wrestling team showed less than pre-season predictions forecasted. The Crystal Lake mat- men could muster only four wins against eight losses. After three losses to McHenry, North Chicago, and De Kalb, the Tigers finally chalked one upin the win column by beating Barrington. The success wasn't lasting as the Tigers dropped the next two meets to West Aurora and Palatine before winning over Zion-Benton. In the remainder of the season, Coach Wheeland 's men rang up two more victories over Libertyville and Dundee but spaced them between losses to Wheaton, Elgin, and Wauconda. In post-season activities, the Tigers took third in both the Conference Meet and the Elgin Regionals. In the Conference Tournament, Kalju Paar and Pete Van lnwegen took first place in their respective divisions. Baseball Losses Exceed Wins The Tiger's baseball team, piloted by Coach Fred Tipps, experienced a fairly hard 1957 season, losing eight and winning six. Two of the team 's best players, Ed Field and Walt Johnson graduated. Ed was selected as All-Conference and Walt played with the Surburban All-Stars at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Mcl-Ienry, Richmond, and Belviderejoined Crystal Lake for the Regional Tournament. McHenry won the Tourna- ment. Thehighest batting averages were those of Walt Johnson, Blaire Gilbert, and Ed Field. Outstanding pitching was done by Phil Jurs and Walt Johnson. Walt, out of 45 innings pitched had 68 strike outs, while Phil, out of 49 1!3 had 39. 77 Golf ROW 1: J. Jones, A. Peterson, P. Provides Extra-curricular Recreation The Gir1's Athletic Association is an organization for all girls who are interested in extra -curricular rec- reation. Throughout the year, the girls participated in a great variety of sports. As long as the weather permitted, speedball, soccer, and baseball kept GAA members busy. Then captain basketball and trampeline cessions were altemated during the first half of winter, followed by modern dance and volleyball. Units of tennis and baseball wound up the season. The GAA alsohad a float representing the club in the Homecoming Parade. Of course, the annual Magazine Sale was again the major money -making project and brought a nice profit. Since this year's enrollment was considerably larger than in previous years, it was necessary to divide the GAA into three groupsg Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior. Each group met on a different night. Doing most of the bullwork and running the works were the board members. Since GAA is completely run and organizedby the students themselves, they, being the governing body, had a full-time job on their hands. The board was made up of all the officers and two representatives. Elfride Massier, president of GAA, had the job of presiding over all board meetings and leading the regular after school meetings three times a week. Assisting her was Judy McNeil, vice-president. Judy was also in charge of the initiation. To do the secretarial jobs, four secretaries were elected. They were Judy Provo, Monday night secretaryg Mary Finnessy,Tuesday night secretary, and Annemarie Massier, Wednesday night secretary, and Marge Hansen was secretary of the board. Artie Knaack served as treasurer and Connie Konrad as sports manager. Suzie Shade and Marie Diana were the representatives. '79 sw r zf NV , ., H.
