Back in August of last year football again made an appearance in Crystal The coach, Nr Becker, was greeted by some twenty nine boys on the first day of practice It must have been an awful feeling for the coach to see us tripping over our own feet, bumping into each other in plays and missing easy passes But this did not discourage him, and he immediately went to work molding a team from this green material As the opening date drew near, the team looked something like this ends, Paul Larsen and Gene Davis, takles, Bob ahimmins and Gary Olson, guards, Rich- ard Robichaud and kay west, center, John Hermanson, quarterback, Fritz Bender, halfbacks, Victor klbiero and Billy Wiedrich, fullback, Pete Larsen This is the lineup that took the 13 e beating from Lake Linden in the first game The same boys started the next weekend at Houghton but again were turned back, L7 20 Hegaunee was the only other team to score against Houghton all year Returning to the home field we met the L'anse Purple Hornets and emerged victorious letting the purple clad return home on the short end of a 13 O score Next we went to Ontonagon to be beaten 39 12 the third defeat of our first season since l9L0 Back to the home field we went after our second victory against the powerful Niagara eleven After e tightly fought contest the Trojans were victorious by a 7 o score The next Saturday we traveled to Wakefield on a cold, rainy, or I say snowy, day and were trounced by the Cardinals 38 0 The season was brought to a close at the home field against the St Joseph Congregation and we wexs defeated 27 o The team will lose such stars as Richard Roblchaud, John Hermanaon, Gary Olson, Fritz Bender, Victor Alberio and Paul Larsen by graduation Great things w1D.be expected from the boys returning next year since they have had their needed experience Some of the boys returning from the last years squad will be Gene Davis, Lawrence Danielson, Bill Bottger, Bill Broman, Jack Eckola, Bob Shlmmins, Bob Robichaud, Pete Larsen, Bill Weidrich, Henry Lake, Robert Cram, Donald Kaski, Ronald Krempasky, John Stebic, Bill Carlson, Eugene La Chapelle, Basil Loffatt, Donald Pretto, John Alexa, Alton Beck, Donald Peterson, and Jim Anderson The record established by the football team was fair considerirg H055 of the UOYB hid Played f00UbHll before and here's hoping next season will end with the Trojans living up to their name in every way possible After footbaD.always comes the good old basketball season Practice sessions started after the football boys had rested a week Tie squad was cut after the first two weeks of practice The varsity squad was L composed of John Hermanson, Bill Bottger, Pete Larsen, Jerrv He Strom, Bill Wiedrlch, britz Bender, Lawrence Danielson, Victor hlberio, Gene Davis, David Leonard, Paul Larsen, and Francis Robiohaud Opening the season with Vulcan the team was victorious and Vulcan returned home on the dan ling and of a 28 20 score Next came our arch rivals the Norway Viklngs he ded by Alan Ronberg The Trojans were turned back by a 32 ul score after a tightly fought con test The Saints of Baraga invaded the Trojan court only to te defeated by the Red and Black by a twenty point margin The score, 55 35 Staying on our home court for the next two games we vere ULtb0K6d by the Iron River Redskins and at the end of the heated battle emerged vic torious by a JL 32 score. Kingsford appeared on the honecourt the follow ing week and Crystal went on to win their fifth victory of the season, 33 29 Next we traveled to Marquette to play the return engagement with the Baraga team It was a different story this time but we still nosed out a 27 2b victory The Saints led most of the game Iron Mountain fell into the hands of the Trojan five on the Crystal Falls court and were defeated 30 27 Nfv Next Iron River provided tough competition for the Trojans but even tually fell before our attack The score board looked like tnis Iron River, 22 Crystal Falls 28 .,n' 0 I -h Pki 1 15 of vc. WT' ID 4 g!s:LnS itll: 2 ,,au. i 'Q A Q The Trojans then went to the West Side to have a crack at the Stem bough team and to be defeated 32 36 This was the first defeat of the 808803 Our winning streak seemed to be snapped because the Vikings beat ue LL 28 Next which kept a score 38 Still met Stambaugh but this as though we were again Wakefield made its feated L5 31 This was Our last two games we traveled to the Kingsford Gym to run a hair raising game the crowds on their feet throughout the contest and ended with 36 in our favor angry over their first defeat of the season the Trojans again time emerged victorious after a game that looked on the road to defeat The score was L2 Ll first appearance on the Trojan court and was de one of the few class C teams we played of the season proved disastrous because they both ended in heart breaking defeats One at the hands of the Iron Mountain Squad, L6 bB, and the other one ut the hands of the Vulcan five, 37 L3 The season ended, the tournament now loomed as the big obstacle in the hearts of the boys Traveling to Bessemer for the District ClasgfC Tournament, the Trojans were pitted against Ontonagon in tie first game of the tourney Crystal was victorious LB 33 The going get tough as the team entered the Iinals and we were scheduled to play the Saint hm brose team, Kings of the Gopebic Range The Saints jumped off to an early lead but asain the fighting spirit that had carried the Trodane through twelve consecutive District Championships was present, and the team recovered to win 43 L5 The U P Tournarent at Iron Mountain looked as though we mlght have a good chance, but as fate would have it we were pitted asainst the Nor way Vikings score and were deieated by a score of 58 and 33 This is part oi the sport sea on ended, o from track to tennis to golf lhese ports have not yet taren place so we cannot mention any thing about them but we all hope they will prove successful It looked mighty nice to see two new trophies added to our collec tion, the Distrlct Cham,lonshlp Trophy and the L6HOm1H66 Range 'BN Team Trophy Ne are very proud of the Varsity and NB tea s and wish them luck in future seasons THE COACHLQ No one SHOWS what the coaches do For them excitement hardly shows But they're always there when the same vets tourh In a way that no body knows The papers tell of a game that' saved By a plav that won much Lame But the coach was sittinp in the They didn't give his crowd, name oo here's to them who do so much To help us when we're down The coaches are the men to thank, bor each, should be a crown Vic albiero I' ' 9 I 4 Q A e L0 Q , ' Q 9 an T 5 -.
