HIGH .. 95 ADS 113 Editor’s Message Classmates and friends - Being editor of the yearbook brings on a great challenge. The challenge of capturing all the memo- ries of one year and putting them into one small book. The 1988 Crystalite staff and myself have worked hard to capture those memories. We hope that in future years you will enjoy looking through this yearbook and thinking back on what this year was like. Although I have only been at Crystal City school for four short years. I have made many friends and memories. I’m going to miss everyone and good ol’ CCHS. I would like to thank everyone who has helped to make this yearbook possible and a special thanks to a wonderful advisor - Mrs. Naumer. Kasey Curran Editor, 1988 Crystalite. 2 Dedication The 1988 Crystalite is dedicated to Mr. Rodney S. Mills. He is retiring from Crystal City High School after 26 years of teaching and coaching. Mr. Mills graduated from Crystal City High School in 1954. He lettered in football, basket- ball, and track. The football team was unde- feated that year, and the basketball team didn’t lose a game until they reached the state tour- nament. Mr. Mills attended Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau on a foot- ball scholarship. He majored in English and Physical Education. He received his Masters Degree from Northeast Missouri State Univer- sity in 1962. Mr. Mills began his teaching career at Hercu- laneum High School in 1958. He taught English and coached football. Mr. Mills came to Crystal City High School in 1962. At Crystal City he has taught English, Physical Education, Hygiene, and Publica- tions. He has sponsored the yearbook, the school newspaper, the Senior and Junior Class and the Senior Play. He has coached football, basketball, track and baseball. He has coached football in Jefferson County for 30 years, taught English for 17 years and Physical Edu- cation for 13 years. When Mr. Mills first came to Crystal City there were over 600 students. The school was much larger when he was a student here. He claims that his greatest honor was winning the “Ugly Man” contest a few years ago. He has enjoyed his teaching career and working with young people very much. Mr. Mills is looking forward to his retirement. Other than playing golf and entertaining John Matthew Mills II, his grand- son, his retirement plans are vague. But Mr. Mills is sure his blood pressure will rise every fall when the “smell of football” fills the air. We would all like to thank Mr. Mills for his many years of service to our school. He is not only a coach and teacher, but he is our friend. Good Luck Mr. Mills! We will all miss you! 3 • • • What’s Hot The yearbook staff chose “Red Hot” as the theme for this year because 1988 saw a lot of hot new trends and fads. The look ranged from short skirts and cropped shirts to big and baggy. As for color, neutrals made it big. The ever famous high tops were still in, along with duck shoes, sandals, canvas tennis shoes, and espadrilles. For accessories, the designer watch and big earrings were a must. A spritz of Colors, Georgio, or Liz Clairborne for the ladies and Obsession for the men, added the finishing touch. Some of the “Hot” things to do this past year were going to the tanning salon, teen night clubs and, as always, the party. “Hot” cars for ’88 were the Suzuki Samurai, Jeeps, little trucks, and Sunbirds. 4 ... espadrilles ... tanning beds ... Guess Dirty Dancing ... acid washed mini skirts ... college sweatshirts ... moon Swatch watches 5 World News Many people don’t pay much attention to the news, but it happens anyway. As students we aren’t very aware of what’s going on in the world, but we should be because the news affects all of us. On October 19, the nation shivered with painful memories as the stock market took a nose-dive, to make that day be referred to as Black Monday. Also around this time we all cheered as strong 18- month-old Jessica McClure was rescued from the well in Midland, Texas without serious injury. The Iran-Contra trials gave us a 1980’s version of Watergate. As 1988 began, we looked back on ... the last full year of the Reagan Presidency ... the “crash” that we did bounce back from ... the 100th birthday of our Constitution ... the Gary Hart scandal... sever- al scandals involving television evangelists ... and so much more. The new year promised excitement with the Olym- pics at Calgary, Canada and an election year with active contests in both parties. In other parts of the world, Russia pulled its troops out of Afghanistan and there was political unrest in Central America. In the political world, George Bush walked away with the Republican vote on Super Tuesday, March 8, leaving Robertson and Missouri Sen. Dick Gep- hardt, totally out of the running. Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis was the Democratic front- runner, while Rev. Jesse Jackson surprised many with his newly acquired political backing. In the world of medicine, AIDS was on the rampage killing thousands, and the drug AZT was found to extend the life of AIDS victims. Even though this year has had some pretty hard times in it, we still have much to be thankful for. We are living in a country where we can go (or not go) to the church of our choice. We can tell our repre- sentatives how we feel about certain issues. And we can vote for our leaders. These are things that, on a whole, are rare in the world. Col- lege testing begins - the PSAT, ASVAB, ACT and for some the SAT. A selected few are inducted into the National Honor Society. Even though juniors are given more freedom in choosing their classes, pressure to make the grade is greater than ever. There are a few required classes however, Mrs. Naumer’s American Literature Advanced Composition (Ernie Pruneau’s favor- ite after school hang-out) and Mr. Sutton’s ever famous American His- tory (DO NOT FOLD SPINDLE OR MUTILATE THESE PAPERS!). Juniors must also pass the United States Constitution test or it’s back to AH1, AH2, or AH3. 23 Ernie Pruneau Mike Pruneau Jeff Reddick Shannon Reed Mike Rhyneer Dawn Ross Dwayne Shubert Kenny Squires Samantha Stephens Angela Teague Ed Theodoro Louie Tindall Brady Trask Dana Vernon Shawn Williams Neena Wilson Heather Wynn Cindy Zoellner If juniors survive the academ- ics there’s a lot more to look forward to. Throughout the year, the jun- iors were strong competitors to the seniors in the spirit stick competition. Finally in the spring, the Junior Senior Prom. Juniors have been busy all year working the conces- sion stands to raise money for the “big event.” At last it’s the end of the year - juniors eagerly await Grad- uation. Of course they are sad to see the seniors leave but af- ter a year of preparations they are ready to be the sen- iors. The majority of the sophomores feel that after being teased and abused last year by the se- nior class that this year has been a let-dowrn. Angie Becker said, “This year has been boring compared to last year, but at times it can be fun.” Most sophomores agree that facing high school with one year under their belts the first day of this year was a piece of cake. Jenny Tipton said, “I felt a lot more comfortable w alking in and knowing where my classes were.” Hang in there, sophomores. Most of them spent their first few weeks wondering if they would fit in or if they would be accepted, but after getting through normal freshman goofs like going to the wrong class or not winning a single basketball game or not being able to open their lockers or__or ... you name it they did it. As the year went on, though, they began to wise up realizing that Mr. Sutton’s grandma will be 90 for the rest of their lives and that going to Mr. G’s office is a good way to get out of class and all those little things that help you survive high school. Although they started off slow, you can tell that one day the Class of ’91 will rule the halls of Crystal City High School. 32 Mike Politte Billie Pope Donald Pope Stephanie Pope Brent Pruneau Susan Pruneau Julie Reed Holly Roth Nicole Sheets Scott Sloan Jeanna Tindall Tony Todd Shannon Trask Rick Uding Jill Vanderlaan Kim Wagner Dena Wansley Gabe Whaley NOT PICTURED Roletta Brown Jason DeVoto Tracy DeVoto Janean Elliott Dena Henderson Jamie Overstreet Brian Pruneau Tom Thompson Larry Womack Sports 33 1987-88 Cheerleaders Back row: Dina Tipton, Jennifer Tipton, Christa Collier, Angie Lalumondier, Juanita Jones Middle: Sa- mantha Stephens, Jenny Cunningham, Julie Edwards Front: Neena Wilson, Jennifer Bell, Daneen Goodwin, Andrea Raines, Angie Becker, Janine Bell Below, Jenny Cunningham and Daneen Goodwin, co-captain and captain. They cheered for football, varsity and J.V. volleyball, and varsity and J.V. basketball, both girls’ and boys.’ Their year began in early summer with practices for a clinic and a week-long camp at SEMO. At camp the girls had hours of classes each day and an evaluation each night. They returned home with many blue ribbons and even won a spirit stick. During the volleyball season the squad shrank to only five because most played volleyball. When basketball began, though, most girls returned to the squad. Four-year cheerleader Dina Tipton said of her final year, “It’s been fun, but this last year has been the very best!” The senior cheerleaders who had been on the squad for the last three years expressed pride for improvements and said they’re going to miss it a lot. .35 Football Front row: Scott White, Jamie Swyers, Brad Herbert, Brian Whiddon, Keith Johns, Franke Elliott, Bret Herbert, Matt Clemens, Shawn Williams. Even though the Hornets started out on the wrong foot, they showed great improvement during the latter part of the season. The Hornets didn’t win any games, but they definitely showed a desire to keep playing. Coach Rodney Mills said he hopes “the kids who got stomped this year will do the stomping next year.” 37 Dawn Goodwin, Karen Meyer, Julie Edwards, Dina Tipton, Amy Cook, Jenny Bell, Jenny Elliott, Mrs. Rugraff, Dawn Ross, Amy McNally, Kerry McFarland, Dana Vernon, Shan- non Reed, and manager Sandra Toland. Hornets Win Their 5th Consecutive District Title The Crystal City varsity volleyball team was 2nd in the DeSoto tournament and tied for sec- ond in conference with Hillsboro and DeSoto. The Hornets also took their 5th consecutive district title and won sectionals by defeating the 2nd state champions, the Hermann Bear- cats. On to state they went. The Hornets failed to win in round robin play and took fourth in the state. Crystal’s overall record was 16-9-3. For the most part it was a very successful sea- son. Five of the six starters will be returning next year with lots of experience and high hopes for a state title. Varsity Volleyball Junior Karen Meyer, co-captain of the volley- ball team, was selected First Team All Confer- ence this year. She was also a member of the KTJJ Dream Team and the All-State Volley- ball Team. 39 JV Freshmen Volleyball Row 1: Dena Wansley, Lisa Pierce, Janine Bell, Tiffany Pogue, Row 2: Tanya Leutzinger, Angie Becker, DeVonne Jackson, Christina Boettger, Stephanie McCreary Row 3: Dena Floyd, Jennifer Tipton, Rachelle DeGeare, Jenny McGraw (manager) Row 1: Heather Williams, Beth Curran Row 2: Mary Pashia, Juanita Jones, Tina Flecke Row 3: Jennifer Haney, Julie Reed, Christa Collier, Michelle Grass, Kim Wagner Cross Country 41 Front: John Boettger and Reggie Fleckie Back: Coach Wills and Eugene Kayser Varsity Basketball Front row: Nathan Null, Jeff Vandcrlaan, Robbie DeGeare, David Rogers, Mike Rhyneer, Bob Wagner, Jamie Kinder. Row 2: Craig Lowry, Matt Easter, Darrell Henderson, Ernie Pruneau, Coach Lynn Long. The Hornets wrere led this season by second year starters David Rogers and Matt Easter. The Hornets lost many close games because of inexperience. As the season went on, though, they pulled to- gether and made some very acceptable accom- plishments. They won consolation at the Hills- boro Tournament, they beat their cross-town rival, Festus, twice, and they played for the championship game in the Festus Tournament. The Hornets went into Districts with high hopes, but they were knocked off in the semifi- nal game by Maplewood, who went on to place third in the state. The Hornet’s overall record was 10-14. 42 Seniors: Nathan Null, Matt Easter, David Rogers, and Jeff Vanderlaan. 43 Varsity Girls’ Basketball Front: Dawn Ross, Karen Meyer, Dana Vernon, Shannon Reed, Jennifer Tipton, Dawn Goodwin. Girls’ Team Gains Experience For Next Year This year’s Varsity Girls’ Basket- ball team had a tough season. They had a record of 9-12. This year’s team only had two seniors, Fatima Merino and Angie Lalumondier. The rest were jun- iors, which should give next year’s team a more solid founda- tion to build on. The captain of the team was Angie Lalumondier. Fatima, our foreign exchange student from Spain, was the other graduating senior. Coach Cindy Rugraff said, “The girls worked hard to improve a 4- 13 record to a 12-14 record.” Karen Meyer takes her turn against Valle. 45 JV Freshman Basketball Row 1: Scott Ball, Brian Harmon, David Perry, Matt La Brayere, Josh Jarvis, Chris- tian Dinolfo Row 2: Jackie Graham, Eric Pruneau, Sean Evans, Scott Sloan 46 Row 1: Spencer Kearns, Eugene Kayser, Keith Johns, Alan Kirkland Row 2: Scott White, Coach Barker, Scott Sloan JV Girls’ Basketball Row 1: Jennifer Tipton, Christina Boettger, Janine Bell, Tanya Leutzinger, Julie Reed, Jenny McGraw Row 2: Susan Pruneau, Emily Evans, Jennifer Haney, Nicole Sheets, Stephanie McCreary Row 3: Jill Vanderlaan, DeVonne Jackson, LaDonna Pittman, Dena Wansley, Heather Williams Boys’ Track Front Row: Sean Courtois, Brad Herbert, Chris Nugent, Steve Lantz, John Boettger, Middle Row: Matt Longo, Shannon Stewart, Reggie Flecke, Jym Bhat, Rob DeGeare, Jerry Paul, Brian Brad- shaw, Dusty Alley. Back Row: Mary Pashia, David Frey, James Graham, Coach Todd Campbell, Rod Goodwin, Bret Herbert, and Jeanna Tindall. This year the boys’ track team had two state qualifiers, Matt Longo and Reggie Flecke. Matt placed sixth at state in the 110 meter high hurdles and also set a new school record of 41.9 seconds in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Coach Todd Campbell reflected on the season by saying, “It was a learning experience on mine and the athletes’ part. I am proud of each and every one that finished the season with me.” The track team lost six graduating seniors this year: Brad Herbert, Chris Nugent, Reggie Flecke, Jerry Paul, David Frey, and Bret Herbert. Next year’s team will have to work hard to fill the gap left by the seniors, but Coach Campbell thinks they can do it if they work hard. “Each year our goal is to be better than the year before,” Campbell said. “I see better things com- ing from the boys’ track program in the next couple of years.” 49 Girls’ Track Row 1: Tina Flecke, DeVonne Jackson, Jenny Bell, Michelle Grass, Beth Curran. Row 2: Janise Rhiney, Chris Boettger, Jenny Boyer, Lisa Craig. Row 3: Dena Wansley, Angie Lalumondier, Kathy Cohoon, Kerry McFarland, and Jenny McGraw. 50 Girls Win 5th Consecutive State Title The Crystal City girls’ track team continued its dynasty of state championships by adding its fifth consecutive title this year. The season got off to a rough start when the team lost strong member Amy Cook to a serious knee injury. The girls knew it would be tough to capture the state crown for the fifth year, but they also knew it wouldn’t be impossible. The Hornets easily won their districts with 136 points, and ten girls qualified for state. Senior Angie Lalumondier won the 100 and 200 at state, and she placed second in the 400. She set state records in both the 100 and 200 meter races as well. Angie was also a member of the 400 meter relay team of Jenny Bell, DeVonne Jackson, and Kerry McFarland that placed second. Junior Kerry McFarland placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles, giving the Hornets the 5 points they needed to win the state title. As the newspaper read, the Hornets proved that they were the “little miracle team that could.” Best of luck to next year’s girls as they go for number six! 51 Baseball Front row: Jackie Graham, Spencer Kearns, Eric Pruneau, Craig Holland, Mike DeAngelo. Sec- ond row: Keith Johns, Craig Lowry, Mike Pruneau, Doug McDaniel, Ernie Pruneau, Paul Cover- dell. Back row: Coach Lynn Long, Eddie Theodoro, Bob Wagner, J.D. Schilly, Jamie Kinder. Not pictured: Matt Linderer and Darrell Henderson. The ’88 Hornet baseball team ended the sea- son with a 2-12 record. Coach Lynn Long said two of the brightest points of the season were junior Mike Pruneau’s hitting and sopho- more Craig Lowry’s pitching. With only three seniors from the team gradu- ating (Matt Linderer, Doug McDaniel, and J.D. Schilly), next year’s team will be made up of several experienced players. Coach Long said the fact that the underclassmen got plenty of playing time this year will re- sult in an improved team next year. 53 Tennis Front: Heather Williams, Fatima Merino, Nathan Clemens, Jill Vanderlaan. The year started off with the annual Freshman Mixer in September. In Octo- ber, the Student Council pre- sented a banner to the band and organized the Homecom- ing Parade and Spirit Week. In February, they distributed flowers for Valentine’s Day. The year ended with a bumper-sticker fund raiser to help Project Graduation. The year was very beneficial. 58 OFFICERS: Sean Usery, President; Daneen Goodwin, Vice President; Jenny Cunningham, Secretary; Jenny Bell, Treasur- er. Their first priority was an afterschool tutoring service. Two members were available every Thursday to help any- one who needed help. As in the past, the Honor Society spon- sored the Blood Drive on May 16. The goal was 50 pints but this was exceeded and 58 pints were collected. The NHS not only set out to excel in aca- demics but to have fun as well. In March they saw the Blues play the Blackhawks at the Arena. They got a taste of cul- ture too. Members attended the musical “Cats” and a week later went to the repertory theater with the drama class. This year’s media staff raised money by sponsoring a Sweethearts Dance and by selling Santa-Grams and Sweetie-Grams. Both Year- book and Newspaper worked hard till the very last minute before a deadline. The yearbook class did every- thing from selling ads to de- veloping their own pictures to ensure the yearbook’s suc- cess. The newspaper class sold per- sonals to help alleviate the ex- pense of the newspaper’s pro- duction. When in class, they conducted interviews and wrote news and feature stor- ies for the paper. 60 Newspaper Staff Row 1: Mrs. Naumer (sponsor), Jennifer Nall Row 2: Angie Teague, Jessica Ulmer (editor) Row 3: Connie Greer, David Frey, Julie Edwards, Linda Porter, Christy Ipock, Amy McNally Row 4: Neena Wilson, Michele Langelier.
